ENGELSE VERTALING: Hello my students and welcome to “Langzaam Nederlands Podcast” episode 1. Text and translation in the description. Episode 1: The Dutch School System. The Dutch school system is complex for many students. So in this episode, I want to tell you about my personal experiences with the Dutch school system. It might have changed a little since I was young, but I think most things are still the same. Most Dutch people start school when they’re 4 years old in kindergarten. The first year of kindergarten is called “groep 1” and it’s also the first year of elementary school. Elementary school has a total of 8 grades and grades 1 and 2 of elementary school are kindergarten. In elementary school grades 3 to 8 you learn the basics. You learn to read, write, topography, math, a little history, but we’re not learning languages at elementary school yet, this happens later. I did the “cito-toets” in grade 8, but I’ve heard this test is now called the “eindtoets”. This test tests the student’s knowledge. This test also helps the student to decide which level they have for the next school. Oh and the children also perform the grade 8 musical in the 8th grade. I was very excited about this musical and I played the role of “the Diva”. Who’s surprised? Nobody, I guess. The next school, after elementary school, is called “de middelbare school”. This is where the school system gets a little complex. The “middelbare school” has three levels: VWO, HAVO and VMBO. The highest level is VWO, this is an acronym for: “scientific education preparation” On this level, the focus is placed on science and students attend school for 6 years. Students with the VWO level can do anything. Most go to university. The university focuses on science. You don’t learn a lot of practical things at university. Through university, students can start careers such as doctor, psychologist, lawyer, and professor. The second level is called HAVO, this is an acronym for: “higher general continued education”. Here, the focus is on a mix of science and praxis and students attend school for 5 years. Students can’t go to university with HAVO. Most go to “de hogeschool”. The English term for “de hogeschool” is university of applied sciences. Through “de hogeschool” students can start careers such as teacher, physio therapist or social worker. The lowest level is called VMBO, this is an acronym for “vocational education preparation” Here, the focus is on praxis and students attend school for 4 years. Students can’t go to university or the university of applied sciences with VMBO. All students go to MBO, this is an acronym for “vocational education” Through MBO, students can start careers such as nurse, lab worker and assistant. I know this is very complex, but it’s not always that strict. For example, I started with VWO, but after 2 years I went to HAVO because of my bad situation at home. Later I went to the university of applied sciences, but I was doing much better then and with high grades I was able to continue at university. So there is some flexibility. In Afrikaans the "Spanish" trilling or rolling /r/ is considered the only correct way to pronounce the letter, and the "French" uvular /r/ is seen as a speech impediment.

omg, this is so helpful. I used to use a microphone in google translate to practice ui and Google never recognized it. Now that I watched your video and tried to say it to google again, it started to recognize words like uit, fruit, thuis, etc. Thanks!!!

To everyone reading this whose native language isn't Dutch. This is a great teacher. But I do have one minor point to make on the 'ui' sound. As a native Dutch person of a certain age I'm thinking such a pity that the 'ui' pronounciation here isn't as clean (zuiver) as it could be. We too have regional differences and the ui sound is prone to differ somewhat everywhere you go. Having said that I can find nothing else to critique and so keep up the good work in learning and teaching Dutch. (feeling so so ABN right now) *Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands translates into Common Civilized Dutch. 😂😂😂 As if...

Thank you. Throughout the years, this has been the most helpful technique for my students to get close to the ui sound. As native Dutch speakers, we obviously don't start the diphthong in the same way, but once students get used to this pronunciation, they'll transition into the native sound more easily.

I know it s just a video and i dont know you but I kinda fell in love with you. Maybe you want to write me a message in KZread? Back to Duolingo. I have been using it for quite a time now. Started with Spanish. Recently started with Dutch now. It's such a funny language. How it sounds the links to German and English. I love it. You are wrong about Dutch starting with the French/ southern-German R, we started with the rolling R. In north/lower-Germany they use that R still as well.

I guess so, although this sound doesn't really exist in German. My German students struggle with this sound and the ei/ij the most, because everything else is so similar

Another note, I find you pronounce the -n at the end of words (-en) and this seems unusual for me as I have learnt that you are not supposed to pronounce the n here, even in the middle of words such as negentig or notenboek. Is this right?

Good question. Whether you add the n or not can be highly dependent on a few factors, like generation, dialect, formality and the specific word or context. As a teacher, I always add the -n because I want to teach my students the foundation of Dutch. As they progress more and have more experience speaking the language, they'll automatically learn when to add the -n and when not to. I would never say adding the -n is incorrect, but it isn't done often. Hope this helps!

Dank u well! It would be much interesting and informative, at least for linguists, to compare the sounds with their symbols in IPA. This is especially important in order to differentiate the soft "g" with the German sound found in a word such as "ich". The sounds given in IPA are different symbolized by x (soft g) and ç (as in German "ich") whereas the harsh g is χ. The first (x) is velar and the second (ç) is palatal (χ is uvular). It is very difficult for me to differentiate these two (the angry cat seemed ç to me!). In addition, you haven't mentioned when the Dutch g becomes voiced. Again IPA has a symbol for this, ɣ. I find it very difficult to pronounce words such as gretig, which is according to the dictionary pronounced as /ɣretəχ/ starting with a voiced g and ending with a harsh g (or soft g depending on our preference) so they are two different sounds! I would like very much to have your view on these points.
