Right now I'm so relieved that you had trouble pronouncing the hard g followed by an r as distinct segments. This is what I was talking about under another video of yours, I don't seem to be able to do that. But if the r is basically dropped after g in the Northern varieties, then I am really happy now 🥳

Not Just Frisia has its own language. Low Saxon is also official recognized in the Netherlands and Germany.

True! Although I've never heard it before. Frisian is definitely more known and spoken about

(Harde/Randstad) CH voor ‘buitenlanders’ is inderdaad eigenlijk uit te leggen als het geluid van een hissende kat. CH sound (for non-natives) generally can be compared to a hissing cat😂 This is not even the most difficult one. Generally, non-natives have even more problems with *sch* and words that use *IJ* or *ei*

That depends on their native language actually. The g/ch sound is more difficult for people from India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka, but also to people from the US. The "UI" sound is the most difficult sound across the board.

Dank u well! It would be much interesting and informative, at least for linguists, to compare the sounds with their symbols in IPA. This is especially important in order to differentiate the soft "g" with the German sound found in a word such as "ich". The sounds given in IPA are different symbolized by x (soft g) and ç (as in German "ich") whereas the harsh g is χ. The first (x) is velar and the second (ç) is palatal (χ is uvular). It is very difficult for me to differentiate these two (the angry cat seemed ç to me!). In addition, you haven't mentioned when the Dutch g becomes voiced. Again IPA has a symbol for this, ɣ. I find it very difficult to pronounce words such as gretig, which is according to the dictionary pronounced as /ɣretəχ/ starting with a voiced g and ending with a harsh g (or soft g depending on our preference) so they are two different sounds! I would like very much to have your view on these points.

Another note, I find you pronounce the -n at the end of words (-en) and this seems unusual for me as I have learnt that you are not supposed to pronounce the n here, even in the middle of words such as negentig or notenboek. Is this right?

Good question. Whether you add the n or not can be highly dependent on a few factors, like generation, dialect, formality and the specific word or context. As a teacher, I always add the -n because I want to teach my students the foundation of Dutch. As they progress more and have more experience speaking the language, they'll automatically learn when to add the -n and when not to. I would never say adding the -n is incorrect, but it isn't done often. Hope this helps!

I am an American that studied in Belgium. In the Dutch dictionary, the G sound changes depending on its position in the word and the stress in the word. In Belgium people have only one G sound, regardless of position in a word. The pronunciations in the Dutch dictionary would be mixed, as you said you do with G. In Belgium, a person would say they have only one G sound. I remember Belgium has east and west pronunciations and then the super unique coastal pronunciations. I think on the coast they actual swap the G and H sounds. G sounds like H and H sounds like G, which is odd, because other Belgians hardly voice the H. West Flemish I think has soft G with barely there H, while East Flemish / Limburg, slightly harder G and H is voiced (I think). The Belgian coast has the weird pronunciations. I only learned the Dutch expression, "ach" after leaving Belgium. I don't know if they say it in Belgium or if their ch is so soft, I missed hearing it, or if they use their other Belgian expressions instead (ah / allee). Do people that have a soft G, also have a soft ch? That would make sense, but ch always strikes me as being a hard G sound. It was long ago for me, but now I am semi-retired, I want to learn Dutch again and better than before.

Good points, the Belgian G is often a lot more unified and the ch sound is often pronounced as a G, for example in the words "echt", "acht" and "ochtend"

i'm looking into, in the nearish future, moving to the netherlands to be a sociology student and (hopefully) planting roots there or elsewise in the EU. i'm a trans person hailing from the US who's basically felt increasingly disenfranchised with this side of the pond over the last 8 years or so. i don't really expect the netherlands to be perfect, but it has a lot of things that i place a lot of personal value on as a transfem i'm already doing a lot of unusual stuff with my throat just in normal day to day speech, so pronunciation is probably gonna be especially a challenge for me - thus these videos are really helpful! i'll probably book some classes with you at some point to go over things. for now, i'm very in 'the basics' and content to use this as supplemental help. rock on, cat! ^u^

Is the soft "g" sometimes also near to a French "r"? For example we in Westphalia also use a soft g but in many words it is a "r". For example: We are flown out. Wy sind jutfloren. Wy sind iutfloghen. Wij zijn uit gevlogen.
