In 2018 we made the 2,500 mile trek from Oregon to Alaska. We downsized our house, our land, and our possessions in pursuit of a self sufficient dream. We landed at a tiny cabin surrounded by forest in beautiful Southcentral AK, never expecting we would be living "off the grid." Each day we face new challenges as we learn to embrace our life here in the wilderness of Alaska.
Tag along to share our experience living life to the fullest, connecting with nature and creating food we are passionate about.
Cheers,
The Illia Family

I love driving that part of the road north to visit my sister (6 hrs north). Lovely any season but always fun to see the ‘bou
What happened to Bo?? I’ve been busy lately and haven’t been able to watch you guys! I’m so sorry for your loss! I know he was part of your family and will be missed! I will miss seeing him! ❤❤❤❤
You are always Eric's cheerleader. He works really hard.
Hey, the sharpi wont last, or atleast it didn't for me...
Soooo happy to see you gardening again. 🎉
I have used sharpies to label and the sun bleaches the ink out. Great planting!
Look up the hardness of oil drill stems. This needs a torch.
Ariel When are you building the hot boxes Id love to see you do one this year Hope too see it get done by you 😁👍🏻 Linda from Ct
We built them, they will be on the next garden video 😀
What an awesome job you are both doing! The Q-hut looks great! :)
Ny-gee-ry.
I use distilled water with my eggs and will do a maximum of two gallons at a time. I don't want to do any more than that at a time due to weight and lifting. I only use unwashed, unsoiled eggs which show no signs of having a crack or damage to shell. Before I crack an egg to cook them I always rinse then under cold water. I always crack my eggs one at a time in a small bowl. That way if I have a spoiled egg I don't ruin any good ones in the same bowl. Thank you for your video's they have taught me so much.
The tool should be named a fencing key. I love the garden.
Quonset lasts 100 years, spray foam lasts only 50 years. What are you planning?
I don't know why you didn't paint the gate before installation, it just seems like the logical thing to do if you don't want to overspray on the post like you did. Don't get me wrong, the build and welding is good, but the execution is lacking a bit. Build, paint, then install/weld.
You should consider putting up bat houses to help with your mosquito problem :)
Oooh 8" all fuel pipe. Big $$$. You guys using the Selkirk brand again? (I remember seeing the boxes in another video). Looks like the roof support is the "roof guy kit" I am an HVAC sales woman and its always awesome to see the trade in all aspects of life. I do have a suggestion though. Please keep record of what brand venting you are using. Most brands do not interchange with each other. And it can be hard trying to match it up based off looks/ conmection type. Also, lol, Whoever sold you the set up messed up not adding the stove pipe adapter to the install quote. Gotta get from double wall to single wall some how! Goofy mistake from a sales point! Oh they make wall brackets too, if the pipe on the side if the house needs securing. I think its every 3 ft after the T you need one. Not sure if applicable here.
Oh no I missed this😢. RIP Bo
not to rain on anyone's parade, but that atv would buy 10 years worth of groceries
Name the tool "Clark.". 😅😅😅
Did you say I didn't take my silver? When you were talking about the bugs biting?
"NO Chicken!" made both my wife and I laugh early this morning. You guys are the best. Keep after it!
Use Rock or marble way cheaper
love what you are doing only i would definintey have the gate open our of the garten yes a little irritating bur trust be many a sneaky critter will figure that one out with a lean to gate
Okay, real advice for fence pulling. Observations of your process from a lifelong farmer: 1) Change to a homemade clamp for pulling your fence tight...two 2X4s longer than the height of your wire...drill holes for carriage bolts to go through both boards (we use 4 bolts for 5' woven wire fence, so you'll need about 8 bolts. The 2X4s sandwich the woven wire fence and we attach chain (not nylon straps - not safe) to the sandwiched 2X4s with barbless stranded wire. We only use the tractor as our anchor point and use a come-along to pull the fence tight. Lastly, we never (never) pull around a corner post...always terminate your woven wire on the end post and then start with your next straight pull by starting your next piece of woven wire by doing the connection exactly as you did on the first pull. Good luck. Always rooting for you guys. Love your channel's content. 👍😊
I don't know if you can get this in Alaska, but my favorite soy is Aloha Shoyu
King Bo needs his rest...LOL Bless his heart RIP BO, Love you guys
🥰IT BREATH IT Alaska what a place to live 🥰"
Hi, the sun may dissolve your markings. Found out the hard way this spring with my tomatoe markers. Went to plant them and the markers were less the marking. I think UV sunlight dissolved it.
Are you using Toad fish fillet knife? That's very good knife
Eric I just saw this on a KZread short and thought about the trouble you had with your furnace. kzread.info6L4RjMar-wo?si=HFH2NPI5atMPdQDB
I’ve been watching you two from the beginning. I don’t know anyone who works so hard for their purpose. Thank you for sharing and helping us all to learn so much about so many things.❤
How about magnets to keep your gate closed?
Only on your videos would one say what a good job you did building a rest room building!
Best channel on youtube. You show the good, the challenge, the truth. Love it all.
I have been following your channel. Ever since I stumbled upon your massive potato harvest video a few years ago. I love your content and particularly love your gardening videos. It’s my favorite time of the year. Thank you for sharing your journey. It’s absolutely amazing. I’m very much looking forward for the next vid.
Hello from the Yukon neighbour! Love following your developments, hoping to do something similar one day here 😄🍁
Great to see the garden developing
Love the music!
Hurray!!!! Gardening is back!!!! My favorite part of this channel (I love it all, but gardening/cooking/preserving food is my fav❤
I wasnt looking at the screen so i had to re watch the "what no !... Chicken ! No chicken!" Twice lol. It knew what it was doing lol. Just smart enough to do what you dont want them to do lol.
My wife wishes to know if you are keeping secrets
Another great video guys!
Luv luv luv your garden fence!!!! Wow
Try black spruce tips for tea and syrup, and white spruce for more tangy recipes. I noticed they do definitely smell quite different. I made a aioli out of white spruce that was pretty tasty.
God water is much better than hose water!!!
I absolutely luv your gate but in our location in soldotna the moose would find their way in for sure
"They're really tasty creatures." lol
Those leggy, shrivelled potatoes should do absolutely fine! I planted out a piece of potato that I had grown in water until it had green leaves when I was a kid, and it grew potatoes! I’ve seen some pretty gnarly potatoes that looked wilder than yours planted out with good success
Onions love nitrogen because the bulb is actually a modified underground stem, and as you know, stem and leaf growth is promoted with nitrogen!
