An ENTIRE Winter Off Grid | Everyday Challenges Living in Alaska

Each year we brave yet another Alaskan winter, this particular season we anticipated new issues knowing we were going to experience the coldest temperatures we have ever seen. We set out to document what problems would arise and without fail things stopped working requiring us to rise to the occasion of each challenge. Although the snowy and frosted landscape can be wickedly beautiful, choosing to lead an off grid lifestyle during Alaska's coldest and darkest months can be physically demanding and psychologically difficult. Nonetheless, we are happy to have pulled through to the other side and we are left eagerly anticipating the arrival of break up season!
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

My son is a beekeeper and he said if you want any chance with your bees, you should put them in a shed/barn over winter, not with the chickens or heated, but in a shed, so you can also feed them without losing too much heat. Maybe in an extension of the quonset hut later... I'm glad you guys made it through the tough winter. Thank goodness you are both incredible tough people. Stay strong, best wishes, look forward to your summer festivities.

I've been suggesting that every year -- even in Scotland we brought the bees inside the shed out of the winds and frost, if you've got the space, why not? Just because they might survive why take the chance on the poor little things. What about an extension to the chicken shed?

The way you both work together, to tackle the hardships of living in Alaska, can be deceiving to others who think it LOOKS EASY! If Eric didn't have the extensive knowledge and ability to diagnosis and fix mechanical issues, and Ariel didn't have the drive, and willingness to work beside Eric, as a team, and meticulously plan for your garden and your food supplies, you couldn't make it look so easy. On top of everything you must do just to survive, you film, edit, and produce a video to share your adventures with us! Thank you for allowing us to peek into the window of your life, once a week. May you have many, many more years of good health and happiness together.

If someone I loved was in excruciating pain, I would want to end their pain, and I assume that's why you loved Bo enough to release him from it. The machines we've come to rely on are not made for 40 degree below zero weather, so you are adapting, and at war with the cold. Bo KNEW! (He was a wise old soul. Missing that boy with you) Bandit's ready! Pepper be like: "Iz kold gis lukin out de windo." For the 20 winters I spent in Alaska, 10 of which were in the Arctic, the darkness was what was the hardest part for me. Sure, the cold was brutal, but that lack of sunlight takes its toll on your mood, especially WAY up north when the sun sets in November and doesn't come back up until March. It's good to hear that Bandit's bouncing back from losing his pal.

That must be absolutely awesome to be able to see the northern lights. What a spectacular phenomenon. These things are here to test us, generator problem and all of the other things that go wrong. At least you will be more prepared for next winter. Try keeping spare parts for the parts that are vulnerable to going wrong. Personally I can’t wait for summer. It has done nothing but rain here in the uk all autumn and winter. And it sucks..👍❤️👍

I am in awe at all the repairs that Eriv does so that you two can live there! Eric remains so calm at each dilemma, that amazes me, i did not see anything like that growing up, so thank you!! Your toughest part was losing Bo. Each of the pets add so much to our lives, but when they leave, they take a large part of our hearts with them!! Blessings as you persevere in a very harsh environment!! But, i am so glad that you have each other!!

Really nice documentation of your winter. So sad losing Bo. You guys have many challenges during an Alaskan winter keeping everything working; generators, snowmobiles, trucks, chicken coop, scraping snow off roofs. You do an amazing job at all of it. Hats off to you both. Spring is here and we'll look forward to your upcoming adventures! Take care.

A great visit to us to let us see just how it really is during winter in Alaska. I'm sorry that soo many things broke or hiccuped along the way. Losing Bo was so hard but we probably all have had to face that sometime during our lives but we all realize how hard it was for the both of you and Bandit. My big dogs are 11, 12 and 13. I look forward to your next visit.

I started watching your channel when you drove up to Alaska and have been watching you ever since. I was choked up about Bo. Even when you know it is coming it is hard. i have been there. I love that you do NOT clean up yor kitchen counters etc. when you film. It is just normal, everyday stuff. Sometime I see the perfect kitchens etc., and it is a bit depressing, thinking your own life is so messy. Yet all our lives are messy. I enjoy watching and am always so impressed by all your work and how you teach ypurselves to do what needs to be done. So rare these days. Reminds me of my dad and grandad. And I am almost 70!

This episode had a bit of everything plus: Traffic roundabout in Alaska?? Time traveller Bo. Goodbye again, handsome fella. Sorry about the bees too. Aurora Borealis redux. Drone footage deluxe. The small engines division of both Honda & Yamaha embarrassed themselves. Chokes, inverters and regulators -- oh my! "Going freestyle" on the roof is bold, Eric. Roof avalanches are cool to see - from here. Another great compilation edit. Thanks.
