Zuckerberg's EU testimony: what he didn't answer

Ғылым және технология

@@320speed This is not a question, they do collect data from everyone who uses the internet (practically speaking). All the websites that have some form of Facebook link, collects marketing info, has a Facebook (or one of their third party related) extensions installed, will collect your data and sign it to your IP and the hardware you were using, and this data is stored in shadow profiles that talk with each other to create as fitting a match as possible on the people they monitor - and in most cases they will also get your name and residence information etc, could be from email subscriptions or web services that require you to create a user, etc. If you actively use the Facebook platform or not doesn't matter, the Facebook algorithms still survey you (and if they don't, then Google or some other company does, and in the end the information gets around to everyone). I constantly try to teach my family about this, but it's often hard for people to grasp that Facebook collects their data even when they don't have a Facebook profile. They don't understand that Facebook is not just a web platform, it's a marketing and analytics tool that has been imbedded in most websites that exist, and you practically can't avoid them. Sure you can deny cookies etc, but most sites denies you access if you decline their cookies so nobody does that - and in the end Facebook collects their data and stores it to the shadow profile linked to your IP and known hardware/devices such as mobile phone, computer, various third party user profiles on other apps and social media platforms etc.

@@320speed What do you think how many people use WhatsApp who have your number saved in their Phone? If you use whatsapp you upload all numbers from your contact list to facebook servers. There they compare them and check if the other person too has WhatsApp. But even if not they now have this number. And know you are in contact with the other person. With this they easily manage to get a profile of most people you are in contact with. Because most of those people have whatsapp. Next they need your name. Easy, because most sites have a tracking pixel or a like/share button for facebook. And even if you dont give a facebook like, facebook knows you visited that website, because the button is from facebook and instantly establishes a connection to it. Now you just need to sign in on any website and chance is high they have your clear name and adress. Because ip adresses dont change every few minutes they can easily track you for longer times. And even if ip adresses change it is easy to link the new shadow profile to the old. You would be surprised how little information is necessary to determine wheter two profiles belong to the same person. And because facebook distributes targeted ads even outside of the facebook page as a service for other websites facebook makes profit with this. And chances are high they have from nearly everyone a profile or shadowprofile

Can they answer the question of how we were all originally blatantly lied to in order to take the UK and other countries into the Common Market which was meant for trading between nations and then led into a European Union that has spent the last 40 + years stripping democratic nations of the right to govern themselves. No country has ever had a vote on this theivery and when they have the EU has made them vote again until they got the right answer. Answer these questions. The EU are control freaks and the only reason that they are giving Zuckerberg a hard time is they can't control, or regulate him as they have done to the rest of Europe. If you want to be part of this club then you have to follow this rules: this, this and this. And when a country doesn't follow they control that infraction by convincing it that he will pay for this unruly behavior. We signed to be part of the EU. Countries are fighting just to be part of it. The things you've pointed out aren't actually that big of a deal in comparison with Germany "being able" not to follow this EU rules. But even that is understandable if you think of who has the money. I actually am pro EU and, honestly, I'm okay if people are against but I think that they're not what you've described. Then don't use facebook. I don't care for Facebook and I don't support it, but I see where Zuckerberg is coming from. Facebook is huge, but ultimately it's just an app on your phone and a website for you to communicate with friends/family. There are plenty of options out there that aren't facebook. I mostly use google hangouts for most chat. I also use Line and Kakao talk when I'm in Japan and Korea, respectively ( Facebook is actually rarely used in those places anymore and being there shows you how easily and quickly facebook can become non-relevant). I use Linkedin(microsoft) for professional contacts and gmail(google again) for all email. As for online 'communities' I would say youtube(Google again) would fall into that category as a competitor. I use Google Drive/photos and Flickr for photobackup and sharing. This is the nature of the competitive landscape and why I emphasize Facebook is ultimately just an app and website. A new alternative or existing alternative can become popular overnight and all it takes is someone to download that from their appstore and click delete on their facebook app and within a year you could see facebook become another Myspace - That's the kind of fear Zuckerburg has and what he is talking about when he mentions the competitive landscape. You might say Facebook is massive and has huge revenue/profits, but these are all contingent on one thing - people using facebook regularly. Google plus was a failure, but it easily could have not been one and that's the kind of situation that he has to be ready for. It doesn't even have to be from a large competitor - this generation is not loyal to companies and if something more interesting comes along they will quickly ditch their old app for a new one. If you have governments breaking up facebook you're only enabling google and microsoft to have less competition. Overall, this is worse for the market.

@@SecularDarwinism Thank you. Did it ever occur to anyone, that people LIKE being a "product". Social media helps us keep in contact with others but most importantly it helps feed our egos. Some people put up constant "snaps" about themselves, constant videos on "insta", or statuses on twitter, just because they love the attention. But I do feel bad for those people who don't have the ego problem. They should have more privacy.

I don't his demeanor was intentional. I'd say internally he felt nervous and under alot of pressure given the depths of this issue that no one really has much experience with handling. The previous monopolistic companies mentioned like microsoft had the skills and expertise to see a path toward a solution and execute. I don't think it will be easy to find a balance between protecting FB users from data mining and selling while allowing for users to continue enriching the site for the purposes of communicating and connecting people worldwide.
