Mark Zuckerberg on the Quest Pro, metaverse, Elon's Twitter takeover and more
Ғылым және технология
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg joined The Verge’s deputy editor Alex Heath for an in-depth conversation about the company’s new high-end, mixed reality headset - the $1,499 Quest Pro - and why he isn’t backing down from building the metaverse. Zuckerberg and Heath also talked about the future of social media, why he enjoys “being doubted,” and the growing concerns about TikTok’s Chinese ownership.

I've been listening to different Zuckerberg interviews over the past few weeks and I have changed my mind about him. Despite the fact that I do not share the vision about the metaverse that he presents, it's clear this man is committed to making it happen. Unlike other CEOs, he is not there just to make money, he wants to develop a platform almost from the ground up and he is convinced that regardless of the success of the metaverse he must take part in its growth. Admirable stuff.
@WolfHeathen
Жыл бұрын
He's doing exactly this just to make money. Facebook has hit the population cap. They physically can't get any more people to join. They have 3 billion users out of 7.5 billion people. 1 billion peoople are between the ages of 0 to 10 and can't legally use Facebook, and you have 1.5 billion people living in places like China and Iran where they're blocked from using it. If you add all the other people who don't have access to a device, computer or the internet, people who are too poor, too old, too infirm, or simply don't care enough to use Facebook, all of a sudden you've gotten extremely close to 7.5 billion people. Growth is physically impossible for Meta. They've hit a brick wall. The only solution for Meta to grow is the metaverse. Sadly for Meta, a metaverse has nothing to offer society. It fills no need or want with anyone except perhaps a tiny amount of people who are the same people who would also play Second Life.

That is naive. Mark is the very person who started the trend of selling information, the very person who created the very algorithms who have no regard for human values, the very platform that has destabilized entire goverments worldwide, he wants control and power. Magnificent interview. Kudos to The Verge and the whole team.
The way I see it, Apple is going to be the bad player this time around. They managed to close off the App Store and enforce a closed model and their care for their costumers will start to wear off. On the other hand, Meta has to turn into a cool company again, and they have the potential to do it. This is a cool interview and an good product demo, they just have to turn the social media aspect towards what people aim for. The social aspect could be a lot, lot better and meaningful.

I highly disagree. In my opinion the new Apple headset coming in January will be more feature rich, have a significantly better user experience given Apple's attention to detail and lack of hurriedness to get products on to the market. Not to mention the fact that it will tie in to an already existing ecosystem; which is the downfall of all of these other companies efforts. They don't have the infrastructure in place.
I’m not a fan of the price and the meta verse but this headset looks amazing.

What a brilliant interview, thank you Alex and The Verge. That is the most positive I’ve seen Mark Z portrayed in years, as others have said, he seems off script and more authentic. Yep, Mark talking like this is much better then seeing pitch us something. I also see a lot of people praising the interviewer, but I can't help but notice that some of his questions were off*. A couple of times it seemed that the questions were loaded; there was more insinuation and interviewer perspective in the question than the answer it was soliciting from Mark. Also, asking Mark to speculate on apple and pushing to get an answer on questions that were not necceseary. I wouldn't be surprised if Mark left with a sour taste. one of the great things that the AR will bring is the ability to remotely interact with technicians and customers on site and see what they see real time. This could be used to train or advise from a remote location. This would be worth billions and bring the world closer. The key is how to monetize and not have everyone cloning the RD knowledge that the company will spend billions to develop. Looks very promising from this tiny segment.
I think he genuinely believes in the company’s strategy, but i also think they’ve probably greatly misjudged and overestimated the product market fit for the metaverse based on every current indicator and it’ll likely prove fatal for them in the medium to long run if that continues to be the case. they likely should have designated it as a significant side project, on the off chance that their estimated future demand assumption for such a platform was correct, while transitioning their main focus to Instagram as the company’s primary hero product and gradually phasing the main fb platform out of that role. insta obviously has the most future potential out of all their products and platforms and is the most relevant among the ascending user/consumer pool of younger millennials and gen z. there’s a lot they could do with it if it received enough of their attention and was given enough distance from the main fb platform and brand and allowed to stand on it’s own. going all in on social commerce and curated discovery as the primary monetization methods would probably be the smartest growth strategy for that platform at this point, imo, and would insulate them and their primary revenue streams from any outside third party policy interference as it would primarily be first-party data reliant.

You know I am kind of a the Verge hater... but man this interview was great
Mark Zuckerberg is a hero our century. No matter what people say, he's the ceo for a reason with advanced vision. He has done it in the past, he'll do it again.
mindblowing fact: Apple ships a little less than 20% of all smartphones worldwide and gets 80% of all smartphone revenue. Pareto's law can be applied in the smartphone industry too.
All memes aside, props to Mark Zuckerberg for pushing the boundary of tech forward
When they were talking about doubters/haters, I couldn't help but to think about the The Social Network movie tagline - "You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies"
I don’t understand how this vid hasn’t blown up yet. Love the passion Mark has for our future and I am totally in for the ride!
He's starting to get comfortable doing interviews, good for him as many will realize that's what made him strange and weird.
I’m so glad he brought up Apple. They are the 8,000 ton elephant in Meta’s Metaverse
If Mark was more public back in the day I think Facebook wouldn't have had so much hate from the public. He's truly a passionate individual.
Meta ought to be wondering what they might do with tranditional social media more then vr, easier access and broadcast of live video and audio, connecting devices for broadcasting live video and audio, meta is a great candidate for competition with twitch and other activity broadcasting, that is what instagram was to Facebook, that I think clearly needs to be their primary agenda, vr ought to be in the background by comparison for their company because they have so much further to go there the returns on investment are slow in vr development and marketing, they ought to have a two prong approach as opposed to the meme that is the metaverse which is really a singular approach dressed up recommended content on social media is a non expansion to what social media offers, empowering people to make more choices is what social media ought to always be focusing on, more options for how people are able to use social media
I just hope this doesn’t completely fail
I got a quest 2 for Xmas 2021...it was really fun the first few months but honestly as the novelty wore off its collecting dust....at it's core I seek engaging content and honestly not finding it in the meta verse. It feels like when chat rooms we're popular in the 90's... games are fun but very little depth in most VR games
I don't get it. They put so much emphasis on wanting to make the social experience of Meta feel like you're actually in each other's presence. Why not make environments where you're actually in each other's presence? Why is there no physical Meta experience room that I can visit in my city? I get this is useful for people separated by large distances, but how about me and my fellow citizens?
I think mark was nervous when you tried to bring the privacy topic
Meta was clearly not the first.. There were projects like decentraland that were clearly ahead
