    I just got mine a few days ago, but I quickly realized that if you're going to move around with this thing, the volume buttons "Rattles" they are the only loose buttons on the unit, so a quick tips for anyone with an H1N is to cut a small strip of black electrical tape and place it over the two volume buttons to the left of the unit, it will remove the rattling sound, and you can still use the buttons. A little everyday hack for you.

    The H1N is my backup audio when shooting in the field in remote areas. I stash it maybe 50 yards from my primary location. When people walk to a location I'm recording at and do nothing but talk I politely let them know I'm recording audio so if they don't want everyone knowing where the bodies are buried probably best to stay quiet.

    I agree about recording water. I was at the Gletscherschlucht in Grindelwald last year and tried to record it, but sadly it was nothing but very very loud white noise. There was no way of recording it and making it sound like a fast flowing canyon river. The walls of the canyon were very high and the noise was too loud. I tried with the H1n but had to delete it because it sounded like nothing. Anyway, I still love my H1n and it was you who made me get one when I started out, after seeing your video about how you started in this business. Anyway, great video as usual. I am really loving your recent walkabout uploads. Great job but it's a shame the H1n didn't really pick up the sound of the cricket so well. Everything else was really great for a tiny cheap handheld.

    @@FreeToUseSounds There is an unusual way to use this mic. I can record field sounds straight to my footage even if the camera is far way from the object. I have a Synco G2 and the receiver I put in top of my camera and I connect the zoom h1n on the transmiter of the synco, so, instead of use the little mic of the synco transmiter I use the greate X Y Mic of H1n. It just turned my H1n on a wireless mic. Resuming this setup: Zoom h1n record the audio send to synco transmiter and the synco transmiter send the audio to the receiver and the receiver send the audio to my camera straight to the footage.

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    Hello Rob, Thanks for reaching out! Whenever I'm solely recording and not filming, I have a little practice that's saved me countless hours in post-production. At the beginning or end of each recording, I always take a moment to verbally note down key details - like what I'm capturing, the location, and the time of day. This way, when I'm sifting through hundreds of files during the editing process, I have a clear auditory marker of what each file contains. It's a simple technique but incredibly effective for keeping things organized!

    Record an instrumental vocal and personal concert on it. I put it exactly in the middle of the two columns, a distance of about 10m. I adjust the volume myself. The limiter is on. Or when listening to a video editing program, I have bad headphones, I always have different sound from different concerts. Or is it a jamb of the most customizable equipment and speakers.

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    This is a really good question to ask because headphone preamps can be noisy too. In a quiet area I have the volume on 100 and lower it down depending on the gain level. It happened sometimes that I think I recorded to noisy just to find out later during the editing process that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. In loud areas I try to be around 60 to 80 but that also depends ion the sound source.

    Fix for rattling noise: take a foam earbud fluffy cover, cut a very thin strip and insert it along the top or bottom of the volume rocker. Poke it in with a thin sharp blade. It will stay nicely in the cavity and totally cure the rattle. You'll need to do the same with the trash/delete button. These are the only buttons that have the rattle and this solution is so good it might have been something they did in the factory. Black coloured foam will not be visible, or it will look factory made on a white edition. Very smart looking and feeling too.

After a while it started to be different. I never used the recorder in rain, I mean never had direct contact with rain, only used it under umbrella and recently used it in a pool house while recording the hot tub sounds. I just watched 3 of your videos, and I loved your content. I hope you can see this message before November 30 because I'll be traveling to Cusco, Peru, and one of my ideas is to film the city and create cinematic content. It's my first time doing this, but I already knew that sound is super important for the quality of what I want to create. I have a question, and I hope you can answer it, haha. I have a budget of $200 to invest in sound equipment. What would be, in your opinion, the best beginner's kit, possibly including headphones? Would the H1N be a good choice? Or is there a better option for recording ambient sound within the budget I mentioned?

    With $200, you can kickstart your recording journey with a Zoom H1n, basic wind protection, headphones, a mini tripod, rechargeable batteries, a charger, and an 32 Gb SD card.

    Is there any alternative that can direct connect into phone/camera?

    Thank you for your videos. (I left this note in the community post. I wasn’t sure if it was best left here). I am hoping you can help with the following: What is the cheapest Zoom device that will work on its own with its own microphones, but also allows me to: - connect 1-2 external microphones, - allow me to connect directly to a computer (pc), so that I also have the option to record directly into a computer (usb?) - connect directly to a (mirrorless) camera so the camera can make use of better mics and not have to sync. audio and video at a later time. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hey! You can look into the Zoom H4n Pro or Zoom H5n. :)

    After much deliberation and procrastination, I recently bought the Zoom H8. It is probably overkill for what I do, but they have come down a lot in price to the point where they are not a lot more expensive that the H5 with a lot more functionality. So hopefully I’ll grow in to it 👍

    You have mentioned Audio Technica 8022 for recording in one of the comments. Is it a good idea that microphone on top of the camera. I have FX3 with top handle and it provides phantom power. Right now I use Rode NTG5 but that's shotgun. Works most of the time, but I want the audio to be more immersive. I am interested in capturing in ambience sounds while shooting as I am a one man band and cant carry too much equipment.

    Oh this might be to heavy and with wind protection its too much. Check out the AT8024 which is perfect for this use case.

    I would be interested to see if the H1N can do live rock concerts and loud bands rehearsals well? How well does the limiter work for this? Or would you recommend the H2N? My old H2 died from a leaking battery 😥

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    Hi! The Zoom H1n could do that for sure but don't be to close to the boxes. The limiter creates some extra noise but that wouldn't matter during a rock concert. Using an H2n gives you another recording option but I wouldn't handheld an H2n. Pretty sensitive so you would need to find a good location. Also keep make sure you have the rights to rock an official concert and seek permission.

    So I combine the Zoom H1n with the Rode Videomic GO II.. to get 24bit 48khz audio, do I need to connect it with the TRS 3.5mm cable that came with the mic? or use usb c to the usb input of the zoom h1n? or doesn't it matter? because when I connect the mic to my computer with the usb it does sound a bit better and cleaner compared to when I connect it to my Zoom h1n.. please any help would be appreciated!

    Hello i want to record ambience sound with h1n what is the best external mic?

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    Жыл бұрын

    Did you not like the ambience recordings that you could directly record with the Zoom H1n? If you want to record with an external stereo microphone that has already a battery powered solution, check out the Audio Technica 8022. But keep in mind you need wind protection too. Probably a tripod, nanopole or pistol grip as well. Do some research and look for external microphones for Zoom H1n. The Zoom H1n doesn’t supply phantom power so that’s an important factor to consider.
