Are we just gonna ignore the tone coming out of that Peavey actor though?! Seriously way underrated amp, those things rock. Also, very useful examples throughout whole video, thank you for posting!
This is exactly what I was looking for - real-world audio sampling with the H1! So many other videos are just demoing it’s dialog/VO capabilities - which is sort of missing the point of what it was designed to do. Thanks!
Amazingly better stereo field separation in the H4n than in either of the other two mikes. Great test, thank you!
Brilliant testing...damn he can play!!!
Great audio test video. The H4N certainly has a broader spectrum, however; it almost seems artificial. This is why I would lean more toward the H1.
for people who cant tell the difference its more than likely you are not listening through decent headphones - 1:48 section onwards there is a world of difference between the H1 and H4 recordings, so much clearer and defined sound in the H4 that starts at 1:58 compared to H1.
Really really useful comparison! Thank you.
Great video, thanks ! I'm getting the H1 soon
can you tell me what settings you used for recording this? such as input level, etc.
Does sound tempting, though I do fancy the 4 track capabilities and XLR ins on the H4n, for use with my existing mics. Thanks - Richard
The H1 is fucking amazing !!

Hello, thanks for the test, really helpfull. Is the sound unedited or did you use a software to polish it out? many thanks
This is the best review ever. Nice one. x
Awesome video!!! I have a question: In regards to the electric guitar sound.. Which recording device came closer to recording the actual sound that came out of the amp?
in the recording of guitars, was the recording recorded on the front of the amplifier or was the recording done in line in the recorder?
Great review, man! May I ask on that live band performance, where did you place both recorders (H1 & H4N)? Thanks!
The H1 does have line in. They also recently updated the firmware for it so you can now use it as an audio interface into PC and Mac.
So I listened to the video through a Focusrite Saffire 2i4 USB audio interface and a set of Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro headphones I noticed the subtle differences between the H1 and H4n. The H1 had a more pronounced narrow stereo field. The H4n had a much wider stereo field but I felt like at times the sound was too thin for my liking. It really depends on your goals with what you want to accomplish with either of these devices. Voice/Interviews/DSLR audio - H1. Music/Sound Effects/Sampling - H4n.
Could be useful the H1 for acoustic piano? Thanks. Great video!
thanks! This is really helpful!
I really like this handy recorder. Here you can see my quick test with acoustic guitar : quick test of ZOOM H1 - Tomasz Cyrek
I use a Zoom H2n for my youtube channel, it has the same XY mics that the H4n uses plus three more mics in MS configuration, it's pretty good
Great review with some extremely useful examples! THANKS! :-)
Thanks for making this video, its very useful!
what camera are you using? thank you
The H4n sounds reeaaally good. but I'll go for the H1 for now.. Thanks! very usefull tests!
Suitable for music concert? Thanks!
Great video! Could you give med the guitar tab?
My friend want to make Techno set, he got a Mixer how we record it? with Chinc to Line in or just without any cables?
Please that cancorder or digital camera with camcorder function was used in this test? The picture is excellent. Intereresse have to know the make and model of equipment. Thanks if you can answer. PAULINHOFERNANDO / Brazil.
Hey. Can you remember if the Low-Cut and the Auto level were on or off ? Thanks
You yre right. H4n sounds much better and clearer on high frequences. Do You think it's like that more because of better mics or better internal mic preamps? I ask because i'm curious what would they sound like when recording from line in. Thanks for your opinions
What is your setting on the zoom h1
Can you please share the settings that you had set your zoom H1 on?
Fantastic test! I have a Zoom H4n and a Zoom H1. Zoom H4n, in comparison, has more bass response. But if I don't record with both, Zoom H1 in manual control level has a good performance. I think You have recorded with Zoom H4n in XY 90*, not XY120*, it's right?
Are you satisfied with the 90 degrees angle of the h1 or it's too narrow sometimes?
Yes, the XLR in is quite a big plus. If I could afford the H4n, or the Tascam DR100 I'd probably go for one of them, but for now the H1 is pretty good. There will always be something better in the future!
Can you tell us what levels you are using for all of those situations? Im talking about H1...
@transparent101How was it? Does it reduce noise when you record?
Parabens pelo video, muito bom!!! By Brazil
u got auto level on. i am making a album for my band what would u recommend settings wise to record.
Thanks !
Different but both good. The comment below about boosting treble would sound right I think. So it's XLR inputs and 4 track or not really, and large difference in cost. I assume the H1 has line in so can be connected to a mixing desk - which would cover my usages of sound effects recording and recording of the final show. I currently use old mini-disk equipment.
Awesome band at 2:05, where can I find more music?
You wouldn't generally use a matched stereo pair of small condensers as close mics for a main vocal take - SM58 (and my fave the SM57) are industry standard mics that get used for vocals often in studios, Remember though, the SM58 is made with live performance in mind and over all of these a large diaphragm condenser is what you would expect to use in a studio unless you are Anthony Kiedis.
what band did you record there?
I think it's really good, it's just that the H4n has more options (and you can plug other 2 microphones ) and their own microphones record more high frecuencies
I`m quite sure that this devices can be equalized by equalizer... Pretty the same, details are in the construction that is why EQ can moderate them
hi again ;] Can anyone tell me, how does H1 work when it's used with high gain settings, like recording guitar and vocals from distance of 2-3 meters? Is there a lot of hum?
Useful, thanks...
quite nice song of the band, whats the name??
@AndersHass I thought exactly the same. Glad I got the h4n instead of the h1. The H1 is still pretty damn good though.
h1 and h4 were very similar in the first half(guitar test). The second half is where you really start to notice the difference. the h1 was a lot more muffled especially at the high end and not as clear as the h4n overall. Although the placement of the recorders were not given in the second half, it probably was the defining factor. Close quarters h1 and h4n sound very similar, but for task where distance is a factor, h4n performs significantly better.
nice vid, thanks!
I've got the H1 myself and im very pleased with it. I think its the cheapest way to get a decent recording of an acoustic instrument. Maybe the H4 is a little more "open" in the sound, but it's hard to hear the difference.
I've got no horse in this race. The H1 and H4n were nearly identical on my phone speaker so I threw on a pair of Sony Professional Studio Monitor MDR-7506 which do not color sound. I agree with those indicating superior stereo imaging/separation of the H4n. It has a more pleasing sound especially in the higher frequencies and feels lime a much wider sound stage. I was thinking of getting the H1 and may well still for the $100 US price differential. I will be recording voice so good enough is good enough. I believe the H1 in this example is quite good enough. If I were a musician and comparing the 2 I would spend for the H4n, no question!
Did you have them at auto or manual? Same settings?
I don't need h1 as recorder but I want mics like it is. Is there something for me?
Thank man ;)
use low cut? or auto level ?? in the acoustic guitar????
Would the h1 be good for singing/rap and voice overs,
H1 is worth the price..:) thanks.
does anybody have a recomandation for a recorder for voice acting for a game?
I'm pretty much in the same situation. Did you regret buying it? The h4n has brighter sound, less muffled. But for more than 2x the price I don't care too much.
Can I use an H1 to record raves/electronic music parties, where the volumes are usually VERY HIGH, with lots of low frequencies?? will it record without distortion?
@soap9535
9 жыл бұрын
Just overlay music
Thanks
Who was the live band??
i feel like im missing out on certain levels through the H4n. I think i prefer the h1.
Its because h4 is set to capture 180 * and h1 has only stacionary mick so h4 can pick up more than h1 but sound quality is the same .
Please cancorder that was used in this test? The picture is excellent. Thanks if you can answer. PAULINHOFERNANDO/ BRAZIL
I swear the H1 sounds better than the H4N every time!
@mikelb77 Well, I don't think the main purpose of this video was to showcase the quality... it's more of a comparison, in which case, the most important factor (IMO) would be equal distance instead of optimal recording distance.
I gonna get one!!!
ZH1 FTW! :)
I think if you use EQ after recording, all recorders sound pretty the same.
what setting of zoom h1 record acoustic in this video?
@kawasepr
6 жыл бұрын
I want to know too! Especially with the acoustic guitar.
So, Zoom H4n does tremenduously better job at stereopicture and presence, which is high frequencies. At mid frequencies sometimes I like H1 more. At low frequencies H1 sound more full, though H4n has very distinctive attack. Overall, H4n has so much presence that going from H1 -> H4n I feel like going from old recording to an actual room.
@transparent101 Good! You saved yourself some money-both ways! Honestly, you'd have to be Superman to tell the difference between H1 and H4.And if the differences in audio quality are that miniscule, why pay more for *just* the sonic quality?
I think that they all sound close even though the more expensive ones sound a read better, however the price greatly makes up for that and there is nothing a little editing can't do.
is it just me who finds the H1 with the best quality sound?
The AKG sounds fantasitc. The Zoom h4 is not bad, but not as fine as the akg
Not to troll at all, but couldn't placement of mics/recorders have more of an effect than the recorder itself? All units are placed as close as possible, but in my experience (especially with mic'ing electric guitar amps), two or three inches can literally make all the difference. Just thinking out loud here though. Thanks for posting the video! Well shot and very thoroughly planned. Definitely an interesting concept either way!
h4n has wider stereo and better dynamics, seems to pick up more sound in the whole of the room. H1 had a lot of highs and more centred sound but its very good.
amazingly i see no difference between zoom h1 and condenser microphone
to be honest i as im experianced in lots of differant mics the h1 had a warmer sound than the h4 but the h4 had better stereo image and the treble was more controled but so marginally that no one would care
Well, all the mics are pointing in different places at different angles.... but cool enough test anyway.
h4 appears to have a better dynamic range but thats just EQ, the H1 just misses a bit of presence at the very top and bottom. the H4 has a completely different and more enhanced spacial rendition. H4 seemed to handle the resonance of the chord at the end better too although it may be that it was played more softly. very subtle differences!
Awesome test, but for a wide price difference H1 is just as good in my opinion. I'd be happy with the H1 for the price. The AKG mics sounded best on the Metal guitar in my opinion, but overall the H4n takes its. It seems like the H1 gave a warmer sound, but the H4Nn gave the widest range in my opinion. Great test, keep up the good work. =]
Seems to me the H1 picks up better lows. And the H4n picks up better high ends. There are parts where I like the H1 better and parts where I like the H4n better. The scary part is they both sound better than the AKG's. And those things cost 500 bucks each.
Some guy told me that a SM58 provides the same quality as a H1 for vocal recording. It's bullshit right?
So H1 a little brighter sounding but you'd only notice it in a side by side test? Sound is certainly clean enough listening in an office on closed back headphones.

Effective dynamic range is about 11 bits, with noise somewhere around -50dB. Good in reasonably loud situations but not so good for quiet recordings.

How is this possibly "brighter sound"? H4n has so much more presence, the bright high frequencies!

Alexey Filippenko I don't think so... Did you heard this test on headphones? My Sony MDR-V55 say the same things of Richard Corfield. More colorful, more sound brightness, more feel...

***** Sony MDR-V55 best headphones ive ever purchased, I probably wont be changing from them anytime soon, been my standard fro 3 years so far and counting
H4N is so much better. Guess I'm saving up.
Maybe it's the setting, I don't know, but the H1 sounds a teensy bit dull compared to the dynamic H4N. But for 1/4 the price, the H1 is AMAZING. Plus, nothing a little EQ tweak won't fix to match the H4N.
Hmm As a bass player: Zoom H1 wins!
More Cowbell ! :D
THE ZOOM H1 CAN BE ADJUSTED TO MATCH THE ZOOM H4N using audacity and boosting the treble on the zoom h1 file recording
I was thinking the same thing.
Wow.... The H1 is actually surprisingly impressive...
In my opinion ( to my ears ) the h1 was the best overall but it seems too close
The H4N seems a little better, bu as previously said, when you master the tracks there's not really much difference. Especially if you don't know, you won't even notice.
