Zoo Tours: The Akron Zoo's Grizzly Ridge
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Episode 89
It feels good to be back in Ohio, on this episode we're up north exploring the Akron Zoo's Grizzly Ridge. A woodland trek through the hillsides, meadows, and rivers of North America. More specifically the ridge is a celebration of Ohio's living wildlife and even wildlife that is now extinct to the state. There's rescued bald eagles, Grizzly bears, overactive river otters, and a wolf with a wild population you wouldn't believe. In zoos, forest themed attractions are often overlooked, but the Akron Zoo made sure that will never be the case for the Grizzly Ridge - enjoy.

Scott Richardson's America's Top 100 Zoos and Aquariums Book
Link: www.izes.co.uk/America-s-Top-1...
"The first-ever comprehensive overview of America's top zoos and aquariums looks at the history and exhibits of the world's biggest and most influential zoo community. Indeed, this book represents the first critical look at U.S. aquariums in 24 years - a period in which much has changed. Each essay concludes with a synopsis of the best exhibits and unusual species to be seen at that particular facility. Also included in this section is an overview of conservational projects at the zoo or aquarium under discussion. Full color imagery illustrates each review; remarkably this is the first time that a guide to U.S. zoos and aquariums has offered such an essential aspect.

I love how they have a Downy woodpecker. I love those little birds
Thanks for coming to Akron! This zoo is literally within a 5 minute drive of my apartment :-)
I can’t wait to see the new Wild Asia exhibit in Akron
Definitely one of the best enclosures for any kind of bear.
Every video puts you in the zoo. So well done, I want to visit them all!!
I personally love these types of exhibits, educating visitors about the native wildlife they may have never realized they had
I got in Akron's newspaper when this exhibit opened! My family went for the member preview and someone from the Beacon Journal snapped a pic of me going down the slide and looking into the water! This zoo and exhibit will always hold a place in my heart
Great video, I especially liked the native woodland bird aviary. My Dad were there once during a snow storm and were able to see most of the Zoo. We worked with the staff and got 2 videos and then had to leave for the drive back to Saint Louis. Love your videos, keep up the great work.
This reminds me of Minnesota's medtronic Minnesota trail an indoor and outdoor exhibit that introduces the public to many native species from grey wolves to wolverines You gotta appreciate zoos efforts to make make native species fun and educational, yet my grandmother doesn't like the idea of having native species in zoos. She would say "if I wanted to go to a zoo I want to see stuff I cannot find in my backyard" (Her zoo in Watertown NY has nothing but native species)
I’m surviving the winter by watching a bunch of zoo in summer videos and weird to see Wild Asia under construction. Not quite up to Grizzly ridge standards but still I like it - the gibbon enclosed especially is fun. Overall, Akron is my favorite small zoo. They get the most out of little land.
Very cool! Keep up the great work!
Wonderful video! As for the original inhabitant of the screech owl exhibit, I think it was a hawk. Maybe a red-tailed hawk. A porcupine might have been in the quail exhibit. Trying to remember. I need to look in my archive. It has been a couple years. The owls and quails are now those exhibits permanent inhabitants.

Thank you! Should've been more specific about the question, I meant to say "According to the original plans, what was supposed to be in the owl enclosure?"

I was just thinking this today, that top 25 list was mostly based my desire to visit each zoo at the time and their entertainment levels - rather than looking at each one objectively. Though it would/will jump spots in a future list, I still stand by my criticisms: the zoo can still be seen in about half an hour, most habitats are too small, Pride of Africa didn't wow me at all, and at the time the poor Tiger Valley was still fresh in my mind. The last one can no longer be criticized since it no longer exists. If I had to change it up, Zoo Knoxville and Newport Aquarium are my least favorite institutions.

Good to know information. From what you are saying it reminds me of the Sunset/David Traylor Zoos in Kansas.
