ZF4HP22, Fixing Leaks

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I seal up a ZF4HP22 to stop the leaks, i also go over a common problem that these transmissions have, this unit is a 100% mechanical transmission, no solenoids at all. Haven't seen one of these transmissions in 20 plus years so i figured let me film this while working on it. Off to the shop, thanks for watching

    The ZF 4-HP22 is what inspired me to start my own business, almost 20 years ago. I still love those transmissions, and I have probably more than half a dozen out of vehicles, and I own probably a dozen vehicles with this type of transmission, at least two of which need repair. So much as I appreciate your videos in general, this one especially was a delight to watch. Thank you!

    Very helpful. I once had to crush a German grey market 733i because of the burnt clutches. There was no info for a kid to find in the 90s about these things. Now I have another shot at it with an '86 524td.

    Hey Gary. Have had a problem so started looking online and couldn’t believe the amount of detailed videos you’ve posted over the years! I have a 1995 Audi A8 4.2L Quattro automatic with what I believe is the 4HP-24a transmission. It goes forward fine but does not reverse. When you put it in reverse it sounds like the box clunks. It does engage and the car rocks back slightly but doesn’t move as you rev. I’m assuming either the F clutch or piston is knackered. Ahh well, thanks for the great vids anyway!

    @@GaryFerraro in neutral you can push it forwards. If you go from D to N and Rev sometimes it’ll move forward abit but most times it just revs.

    @@danielparkes8492 ok, The reason why i ask is , if the forward clutch is locked on, you will have no reverse but it will move forward in neutral. You could have a problem with your F clutch drum, the rings tend to wear out where the E clutch drum rides

    Thanks for making this video Gary. I have a similar transmission from a Jaguar XJ40 that I'm adapting to an Aussie P76 V8 engine. I note your comments re the front A clutch 'failure issue' due to a design flaw. I'm aware of the issue but have not been able to locate the relevant documents outlining the fix. Would it be possible to post clear copies of the relevant pages so that I could take a clear screen shot of them. Once again thank you for posting this very useful video.

    Hey Gary. Great detailed video. Thanks. Regarding the modifications to prevent the A clutch failure. You mentioned the two steps for drilling a hole in the forward clutch piston and the valve body but didn't show those steps. Where is the forward clutch piston and where in the valve body do you drill the larger hole to fix the overpressure issue. Any resources you know of?

  • @GaryFerraro

    @GaryFerraro

    Drill a small hole in the piston (forgot drill size) Then you take out the forward clutch orifice to make up for the drilled hole. Maybe google ZF4HP22 A clutch correction kit, They are out there

    Also I do understand why Volvo still held on to their AW70/71/72’s in the same era they tried that ZF4HP22. Basically the Aw70-72’s are the same as the Toyota A40D series. Some 740’s from 85-88 with naturally aspirated 2.3L gas and 2.4L TDIC Diesel had the ZF4HP22. The shift indicator for the ZF 4hp22 is PRND321 and the AW70-72 is PRND21 with overdrive lockout button. The AW70-72’s Aka Toyota A40D series was more reliable for the Volvo’s 2.3L gas whether naturally aspirated or turbo.

    Did you do the drilling update procedure? I remember when i lived on Long Island and they put my 93 Ford Festiva 5 speed manual on that dyno about year 2000, the car only had about 60 HP and 12 inch tires, they really seemed to abuse the vehicle in my opinion, seems that machine has become history years ago fortunately.

  • @GaryFerraro

    You would drill a bleed hole in the A piston and to make up for the bleed hole the orifice in the valvebody had to be enlarged, if it wasn't the car would slip on pullaway
