ZEISS Vintage into CINEMA Lens CONVERSION - Affordable CINE Lens Set of INDEPENDENCE │ Gear Guide
Ойын-сауық
In this Video i show you how i did a full Cinema Lens Conversion on some old vintage Zeiss Lenses, like Biometar and Flektogon, to get an affordable full Prime Set of Cine Lenses and also a little more Independence as a filmmaker.
The whole set is pretty affordable with just around 1000€ for 5 Zeiss Prime Lenses with all extras. And for being Vintage Lenses they hold up really well with modern lenses and also have their own charme. I already Love them and use them a lot!
Here are all the Lenses i used for the Set and what i paid for them
Zeiss Flektogon 20mm f2,8 -250€
Zeiss Flektogon 35mm f2,4 -200€
Zeiss Biometar 80mm f2,8 -100€
Zeiss Biometar120mm f2,8 -200€
Zeiss Sonnar 180mm f2,8 -150€
And further if you want to 3D Print the FocusRings yourself, here is a link to download the .stl files and the user Manual. I advice you to read the Manual because you have to fine scale the rings in your printing Software before they actually fit:
wolffvisuals.de/yt_files/zeiss_rings.rar
If you print and use them it would be cool if you send me a quick pic on Instagram for example :)
And please don´t upload the rings somewhere else!
Thank you and have fun with it!

But for real, you did a great job here! I was tempted to get some old lenses like this but ended up spending way more money on the Zeiss classics for my work flow. Peace from Norway!
Thank you for being super helpful AND hilarious!!!!
Thanks for great demo. Great looking images.
Funny and Nice. Well done and hope you get your Oscar soon. Thanks for the info.

Oh and yes, I do suffer from G.A.S. and I am on the vintage lens kick, currently. I have not been able to remove my Vivitar 50mm f1.8 from my Sony a7III. It's too pretty. Would love to cine-mod it, may consider that.

Haha ! Maybe the more interesting question would be.. who doesn´t suffer from G.A.S. !? I can totally feel you there. Vintage Lenses have their own charme and if you look at the Price difference from a Vivitar to a Sony G Lens example.. that´s just Nuts! I wish you best of luck if you cine mod it !
Great set of lenses! Great content.

1st Class! Bro'!!!!!!!
I've fallen in love with vintage lenses. I have a Vivitar 28mm f2.5, an Asahi Super Takumar 50mm f1.4, a Helios 44m f2, and a Vivitar 135mm f2.8. They're very versatile and the pictures are incredible on a crop sensor. I should be getting a Canon 6D in the mail TONIGHT, so I'm looking forward to see how they look on all that full frame goodness!

I've just (re)discovered Super Takumar lenses and will be starting the same journey. I know I'm late to this video but I loved it and your sample shots are excellent! Subbed.

Hi all, can i use this lenses on the Sony pmw f3 (super 35 mm) with a pl mount adapter or there are some problems like vignetting for example. thanks a lot.

Great video! I've been recently acquiring a set of these myself. I was hoping you could tell me what step up rings you used and the lens caps. Those seem pretty nice and would like to check them out. Thank you very much Nathan! :) The Step up rings and the lens caps were actually some no-name products. In the end they just have to do their job, so just check out ebay and amazon for the cheapest ones with best reviews! Hope that helps!
This is an awesome great video, guy. I love your presentation, the look of your video, just so amazing. Can these Zeiss lenses be paired with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K Micro four-thirds mount?
@PracticalEffectsGuy

Thank you very much! :) Yep pretty sure they can be mounted on the bmpcc with the right adapters, because the lenses are all at least full frame compatible. Should be no problem!

Thanks for the vid. You’re quite humorous for a German. ;) I’m going vintage lenses for first part of each show in a docu-series and trying to decide on which ones will deliver the best result between these, Super Takumars, Nikons, Canon FDs, etc. still can’t decide but I’m closer. Hah ha.

i do my best.. but precise work is more my thing ! :D i´m honestly not deep enough into the vintage lens game to make a qualified comment about those 3 types, but i´m pretty sure you found your answer already :)
Super informatives Video!
@PracticalEffectsGuy
3 жыл бұрын
Danke dir! Ja die Blende ist tatsächlich ziemlich locker, aber ich habe mich nie daran gestört... bis jetzt zumindest :D Ich müsste die Objektive nochmal aufmachen und gucken, was man da machen kann. So kann ich dir nichts sagen. Sorry.
@nelaqua

How did you get a 3D render of each lens?
HAHAHA Fantastic!
Is it possible to adapt PL mount?
Bro. Splendid video, you're really funny, I'm new to this film making craft and love your advice. I'll save some money and look into it, can I get the focus ring somewhere to buy as I don't have a 3d printer, oh and I don't have gas.
@PracticalEffectsGuy
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much !! Glad you enjoyed it! i have no clue where you could get those rings. but i´ve put the 3d models of the rings in the description. you could let somebody print them for you, but watch out for the fine Adjustments of the scale before printing. or head over to vintagelensesforvideo channel and look if you find the rings somewhere to buy directly. :) oh and sooner or later we all get gas !! :D cheerio !
I just recently repaired the 180(same newer MC model) and the declicking is as simple as you described on the shorter lenses. Just remove the back and some screws.
@PracticalEffectsGuy
3 жыл бұрын
oh ! thanks for the information x) i haven´t actually even looked at the higher focal length lenses, because the declicking was especially interesting for me to walk from darker places to brighter places with the camera, and i wouldn´t do that with a 120mm lens for example. but still very good to know!
Great video. Im looking at building a vintage set of primes. This Cine Zeiss set you built is bad ass. Im all over the place. I got a Helios 44-2 (58) and am looking at Zeiss/Nikkors (18,20) Takumars/Canon (24,35), , and Jupiters (100,105,135) for an eclectic set on an Sony APS-C.
@PracticalEffectsGuy
3 жыл бұрын
Thx Mate! Yeah, there are definitely tons of other options you can go for. For me it was important to have a lens set from the same Line or at least same Brand. Something like the Helios and Jupiters i would only use if they fit in story wise, because of their different aesthetic. But still, the selection you're looking at sounds fire!
You are funny :) Respect!
How do you do those animations? of the outline of the lenses during the showcase?
@PracticalEffectsGuy
3 жыл бұрын
i rebuilt the lenses as CG Model, gave them the original texture from the lenses and used a plugin in AE to get the outline effect to make them more dynamic. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the video and for the link to stl file
did you get a p6 to e mount adapter for the 80mm?
@PracticalEffectsGuy
8 ай бұрын
exactly. mine is from "hartblei" if i´m not mistaken. those kind of adapters are rare, but they do exist x)
Wow this is cool. I'm an indie filmmaker so I can't afford the highest quality gear, but this looks great. I may look into this. It's especially appealing because of the Zeiss glass. Too bad the aperture can't go down any lower.. Is there another super wide lens like a 20-28mm that goes down past 2.8 that you know of?
@PracticalEffectsGuy
5 жыл бұрын
yep, there are moments when i wish they would be a little faster but that´s clearly one small compromise here. a super wide angle lens with such an aperture is in general hard to find.. only things that come to my mind is an old vivitar 28mm 1.9 but that´s quite rare.. or you get a SLR Magic 25mm F1.4 CINE Lens, which is actually very affordable with 300-500€

If you want to gain a stop on all lenses you put on your A-PSC or MFT camera try the Metabones Speedbooster- it’ll also give you a wider field of view with full frame lenses when working on smaller sensors.
Hey buddy, did u have a problem with the P6 mounts? I use a fotodiox P6 to NEX and the aperture can only close up to about F/5.6 :(
