Cinematic Filming & Modding Vintage CONTAX ZEISS Lenses

Ғылым және технология

If you haven't thought about shooting with vintage lenses, you really should! If you can find good deals it's relatively cheap to build out a set that will last a lifetime. Mint Contax Zeiss lenses are actually an investment as the price continues to go up!

I'm going crazy with building a set as well! I sold all of my previous glass and have been slowly building a full set, doing the cinevising myself along the way. So far have: 28mm f/2 AE, 35mm f/1.4 MM, 50mm f/1.4 MM, 60mm f/2.8 Macro-Planar AE (just received and starting to cinevise), and 85mm f/1.4 MM. Saving up and waiting for a decent price for the legendary 21mm f/2.8 MM. Amazing lenses.

Oh btw, there’s also MMG and AEJ. It’s just the MM series that have the circular aperture, and the AE series have the older ninja-star aperture. The G German versions are usually more expensive and the J Japanese versions are a bit more affordable and thuis more sought after.

Great video Lee. I had a full set of Contax Zeiss primes and I ended up selling them. They are really nice, but they are NOT like OG cine super speed versions. I shot a lot of great projects with them but over time I found them to be a little muddy, or too vintage sometimes. Also, they always seemed to give skin tones that were a little brownish. I ended up buying a set of more modern chrome front Zeiss primes. I found these have much better color and more vibrant skin tones. They have the beautiful Zeiss look to them too. When I want to vintage them up, I put a Black Pro Mist filter in front of them to get some halation effects, and it's easy in post to color grade the image to a more vintage desaturated look. For my taste, I found that old Nikkor AI-S (the "AI-S" versions have better color than the "AI" lenses) have a great vintage look, with better color, and are more affordable than Contax Zeiss, so I have a set of those as well. Mainly because they are really lightweight and small, great for gimbal use. I want people to know that buying a set of Contax Zeiss primes, won't magically make your images better. Lighting, great talent, wardrobe, location and production design will have more impact than lenses alone. If you sucked with your Sigma 18-35, your gonna suck with the Contax lenses. :) By the way, even though many of us have bashed Rokinon lenses, check out the great work that Matt from MTS Films has done with them here. vimeo.com/398700436. Will: you make some important points. It’s not your lens, it’s about your skills and artistic resources and ability to apply these to practical use. So I agree with that. But I think it’s a little unfair to compare super speed Zeiss cine lenses to (relatively) inexpensive Contax zeiss vintage lenses. The price difference is massive. So that’s comparing apples to oranges. If anything a more fair comparison of Contax zeiss would be to canon, nikkor or pentagon or similar. After all, they are not cine lenses at all.

I'm seriously thinking of going this route at some stage and using Simmod for the mods. I have a BMPCC4K and (some day) will pair it with a 6K Pro so a set of these now on dumb adapters or metabones, then using them on the 6K later would be great. Love the way they look and price is worth the stretch. I love FD lenses but they don't look quite as nice and are tricker to mod to EF....

I love vintage glass for filmmaking. I had a Pentax 50mm 1.8 and loved it! But I was so dumb to try and make it clickless. I ended up breaking it. I bought it with a camera for 20 bucks and it was like new! Now I use an Olympus 50mm 1.7. One time, I bailed on THREE Helios 58mm lenses!!! I inspected the cameras and decided to not buy them. In my research, several of the modern Z series lenses aren’t that much different, particularly the 21mm but there are some standouts like some of the faster telephotos, including the 85mm 1.4, and, of course, the 28mm F2 “Hollywood” on the wide end. Still, it’s one of those things where the difference is slight so will it actually show in the images? Practically speaking, I’d think not, so I would say don’t go bankrupt trying to hunt down a mint copy of the rarer Contax models when the modern Z equivalents can get you 98.9% of the way there.

They're different... ideally you should have both. Leica R have longer focus throw, cooler temperature, they don't have anti flares coating, heavier, more contrasty, the bokeh is a bit nicer, they're prone to have mechanical issues because of the built in lens hood. Contax Zeiss are more colour accurate, the lens flares are less strong and invasive, they're built like a tank, stronger field of curvature, less chromatic aberration, shorter focus throw, the 21mm f2.8 is impossible to find. I hope this message can help you.

It seems to me the big difference between the ZF’s and Contax are more modern coatings, and the ZF’s will have more modern construction techniques (better tolerances as a result) - but the optical formulas themselves appear to be exactly the same.

@@WarriorsPhoto Shortly - in video the resolution is lower, you go for other aspects in lens performance like breathing, color consistensy in the lens lineup, microcontrast, mechanics, size and weight that are better for cinema mods and etc. For stills the resolution is much more important, breathing is not a thing at all ... you get the idea. So if I have to chose lenses for video the Contax Zeiss lineup is not a bad choise but for stills I preffer the Canon FD lenses. This is if you are going to make a set of lenses for video because the T* lenses are consistent in colors between different models and they breathe less. If you want simply the best possible lenses from 18mm to 135mm and you are shooting stills things are different because every manifacturer is strong in different focal lenghts.
