Hey Mark, just came across yr channel and it made me look into my old kit, that being a canon EOS650 with 3 brilliant condition EF lenses, the 70-210 having tracking focus that meant i could shoot a few closing shots but i didnt get into that as i was quite new to photography, You have sparked up an old hobby with the old lens scenario. I don't know if the tracking focus would work on a new D-SLR but even so its my understanding that these lenses would work on a new body, in that case what would be a good replacement for the old EOS650, any comment/suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Good stuff. This is exactly what I did with the FD lenses I use. Metabones FD to MFT reducer and a set of follow focus gears, end rings/threads and caps. I suppose the next step would have been to de-click the lenses, but to be completely honest it doesn't really bother me if they are stepped rather than stepless. Did you de-click your lenses or just keep them as is?

It’s not hard at all. If you are going to be swapping a lot just make sure you don’t go for a super fitted ring. You’ll know which works best based on how easy it goes on. It’s not like cement so it will set a bit but still easy enough to get off.

@@MarkHoltze Awesome, thanks for the reply. Seems like they have some flexibility for fit, which is great. @@MarkHoltze I received my jumbo ring the other day and I'm very impressed with the fit and finish, and with how well the variable rubber rings work to obtain a good fit. It is easy enough to slide on and off, but is very tight and secure in actual use, so no slippage or walking up and down the ring. I only wish my lens was closer to the maximum size than the minimum so it would be a bit lower profile, but all in all I am quite happy.

The other alternatives are gears by Lux Gear and TILTA, they work the same way except all rubber. Lux Gears cost like 30$ and Tilta gears are 2$ on adorama. The Tilta gears feel so good and have given me no problems that I can't comprehend the need to dish out 55$ for these gears. Especially if one of the reasons to get into vintage lenses is for quality cheap glass. Adding more weight to the lens does seem like a plus though as it can help mitigate focus giggle.

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    3 жыл бұрын

One has various reasons to get into vintage lenses, affordability is one of them, charm and character they bring to professional work could be another. I started in category one and have migrated to category 2. I get paid now to use these lenses so the delta I gain by the price difference between the rubber rings and these ones is negligible. I'm happy there are options for all uses, but I've used 3D printed, I've used Delrin, these are superior to both for the work I do IMHO. I put these on my Contax lenses because as I mentioned before, I use them for commercial work, they're also not "affordable" by contrast to say my Takumars, my 21 cost me more than all my takumar's combined as an example. Also I'll be honest when I say I like to support the "mom and pop shop" especially when they're making nicer stuff than the competition and while it does come at a bit of a price premium, it's not for nothing. All that said, many thanks for your input and offerings of alternatives, I do enjoy Tilta products, but I'm not seeing many people shooting with Leica R's or Contax Zeiss lenses using rubber rings on set. That might need to change :) Thanks mate!

Mark, if this is easy, what about checking SimCine gear on eBay, you measure, order and slip on, since they are made from a special rubber. I have modded the same lens and about 30 more this way. They work great even on my MOG Trioplan 50 f2.9 which is very small.

Sounds like an interesting process mate! I've never used rubber gears personally. Delrin and now these Billet Aluminium ones. After experience the Aluminum ones I' not sure I'd go back, but might be a good option for some of my smaller lenses! Thanks for the info.

@@MarkHoltze I was a bit skeptical TBH, so I tried only two some time ago and I was really surprised at the quality, they are not printed, but manufactured and for me they worked on all of my lenses;)

Why do you not offer 52 mm diameter adapters for Arriflex mk1 lenses? These are very popular lenses for filmmaking

These aren’t my offerings by the way. Maybe post that question to Simmodlens and I’m sure he will give you the answer. My guess would be the demand isn’t there.

Would fatter gears give you a longer throw?

The gear size is standardized for most systems in the industry. The focus through would be the same distance as it's the physical movements of the elements inside the lens.

I'm very curious as to why not focussing to infinity can damage those helicoids? Also, 6:17 - I bet Patrick would Airfry it

  • @MarkHoltze

Think of a screw, those little coils on it that help drive it in or out of the wood. If you don't have it focused to infinity the gear helicoid could snap IF you apply too much pressure completely ruining your lens. It's like stripping a screw in a way, focused to infinity it has the full support of the whole system so the pressure won't break it. I THINK that makes sense if i read it back lol, easier to draw it out.

So I'm new here, and I love the videos, and the sneaky nods to Ryan Reynolds. I do a bit of video work, but nothing that would require follow focus right now, and Zeiss 21mm it a gorgeous piece of glass, but out of my range so I'm looking at the Tokina Firin 20mm f2 fe MF, any thoughts on this lens for video ( the manual lens not the AF lens) ?

Hi Clarhett, unfortunately i've never tried or had much time with Tokina's. 20mm is nice and wide are you on a FF?? It's a bit of a tricky focal length to play with at first, but i think it's great once you dial it in. Check out the Super Takumar 20mm F4.5, it's not as fast, but at 20mm speed isn't really that critical i guess unless you're doing specific astro with it.

Very interesting and universal solution. I don't like 3D printed gears. They do not reach the quality of machined wheels made of aluminum or ertacetal.
