Invest In Lenses - Why Filmmakers Rehouse Vintage Lenses

#vintagelens#vintagelensforvideo#vintagelenses
Why rehousing a vintage lens for video is a great option for many filmmakers. It's not really for everybody, many just want to enjoy these old relics for what they are.There is a growing market of filmmakers that see the value these old optical designs offer. When combined with modern rehousing can really give them the affordable tools they need to realize their vision. At the very least have a hell of a lot of fun, in this video I explain why myself and many others see value in re-housing vintage lenses.

    Mark, you've established this idea of sun and moon and came up with lighting that resembles sun and moon to reflect this idea.. how did you come to this conclusion of Reflecting mood or enhancing the story. Every person is different, but I think many could benefit or be inspired by your thought process in these things.

    I only use my Soviet lenses as a hobby/non-professional sense, so whilst it doesn't make too much sense for me to rehouse, I totally understand why some people would pay thousands of dollars to do so. The glass that these lenses were made of may potentially never be made again, and extending the lifetime of it makes total sense. Great video Mark.

    That's a great set of lenses there and some stunning engineering from Ironglass. Marvellous advice too regarding the relationship between need, content and style. In today's world, rehousing existing lenses makes a lot of sense and if I were looking for cinema lenses to own that'd be the route I'd go down. I've relied a lot on your advice and opinion over the last few years and we now own a whole host of Soviet, Takumar and Pentacon lenses, often basing purchasing decisions on the quality of images you've made with them. When I was in college shooting stills on film in '97 those lenses we're considered to be the bottom of the barrel! Today, in my happy low-budget world they're perfectly adequate in their unmodified state and cheapish non-L Canon stuff does what I need for a modern look. Thanks Mark and all the best. Ooh fun observation: I was out shooting stills for larks with my partner. Identical cameras, he had a Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM and I had a Helios 44m-4 and my shutter speed was 1/3 of a stop faster at f/2 than his was at f/1.8. Both very clean lenses. Neat!

    Big fan of Ironglass and the work they do for sure! That is super cool regarding the Canon STM and the Helios! It's so cool to be able to shift perspective on things especially in the future. Who would have thought we'd be smitten by those lenses we never liked in the beginning.

    @@MarkHoltze Just a thought, but a really really really interesting lens for you to try is the Voigtlander M mount 40mm F1.2… obviously modern, but kind of retro. I got one because I definitely can’t afford a Leica 35mm F1.4, but also it’s a bit tighter and with F1.2 it is super interesting to have subject separation on a wideish lens. Just a thought, but I got one a few weeks back and I’m genuinely amazed.

    In the best case I would print (for my own amateur usage) a rehousing with a 3D-printer. But I totally understand the charm (for a pro) of taking old glass and re-purposing it in a sort of second life. Rehousing demonstrates also respect for the technical qualities of a bygone era. I like that too. And the visual uniformity is just "sexy".

    It's always interesting to see other aspects of the world of photography. I understand that this adds value when you use it on a daily bases in your bussiness. I've seen cheaper cinemod lenses, collectors hate them, and photographers dislike them, so the seller had a hard time getting 100 $ for a lens that unmodified goes for 250$. So be aware, unless you're sure this is your cup of coffee.

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    2 жыл бұрын

    Modded lenses are 100% reversable so at least you have that. If you're using these lenses for video then those mods come in handy, not something a photography can appreciate in their daily use and definitely not going to pay a premium for that. Collectors want to keep things in their original form which makes sense, they're about value not functionality. Rehousing isn't a mod just to be clear. It's basically a new lens while retaining the original optical formula, everything about it is different. If anyone is going to invest in something like a mod or rehouse than they're probably fully aware of their intended use and don't even need people like me telling them what they need. To get the value back out of a modded or rehoused lens the market you're selling in needs to be video focused. You won't find the lenses devalued there, might not sell as fast, but it will sell for asking. That's my experience with it anyway :) Thanks for the insightful comment Kalle!

  • @MarkHoltze

    Very fair, I typically package them into the "looks". The properties of the lenses are different enough I would argue you could find the delta between them and use them to gain a more specifically crafted look. You don't need a full rehousing to do that though. I rarely get push back on gear I suggest using, the soviet rehoused lenses would get zero likely based simply on their form factor. Leica has such a strong brand name that if you shoot anything with a Leica lens you'll also get very little push back using those. I had to really push for the Takumar's when I pitched using those as an example of contrast. I also like mixing looks, shoot say Leica's for a regular sequence and switch to the soviet lenses for flashbacks/flash forwards as an example of how I would use both. There's so much more to consider tho when it comes to shooting so if those Leica's are working for you....keep rocking them. You're hard pressed to find better SLR lenses for video mate.

    Just watched your XT-30 review. Couple things. Lots of shots aiming at the sun. I think I fried all my 80's and 90's pocket Samsung and Panasonic 8 meg or so camera sensors this way. Finally the images were ruddy, and no tools in P.S. could correct it. So, wondering about this now with these much more pricey bodies. You know, when you watch these camera bodies use focus peaking on vintage lenses, it seems like a magic act. It would be a tech video, but I'd really like to know how these Fuji bodies do it. Here's a funny thing: I recently got the Fuji 90mm 2.0, and like most of us, tried shooting it around the home. I have a chalky white African mask with black accents on the eyes that's fun to test my lenses on...portrait mode. Well, even ten feet away, I still had problems getting full d.o.f. on the face with the 90. I wasn't happy with the detail, so I mounted the body on a tripod. But later, I put my 16-50 3.5 OIS lens on my T-2, and hand held, just nailed it. And killer sharp. Yeah, we know about the edges on that lens, but you could swear you shot that mask with a 1000 buck lens. Something else to consider, especially with wide lenses, if your final image has an old fashioned ratio of, say, 1:1.37, which is what the extraordinary film The Cranes Are Flying has, you automatically (in post) wind up with imagery taken with the best part of a lens. (Watch early teleplays like the live shot The Comedian, with Mickey Rooney, script by Rod Sterling, and the d.o.f. never misses, and any lens curvature is cropped out on the old tv screen. And if you shoot stills in square format, even more so. Imagine rating all Fuji lenses all over again based on shooting square format.

    Olympus lenses are primes that are seeing major rehousing work done on them as well because they're great for video. I got into this initially for the cost savings, but it quickly turned into a viable financial investment for the company to expand available tools to help tell visual stories. It's a rabbit hole for sure and definitely not something everyone can see eye to eye on. I think that's what makes it special though, screw all being the same, it's nice to have some artistic differences.

    Hi Mark, I have a question regarding the IronGlass lenses. There are cine-modded lenses for about 200$ and the rehoused lenses for about 1,100$. What’s the benefit of spending about 900$ more on that lens - so is it worth paying that extra amount? Thank you for your videos and the effort you put into your channel Greetings from Germany

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello! First assume that you're not paying for just the lens itself. You could get a regular version of Helios for $50 a modded version for $200 and re-housed for $1100. End result on screen is exactly the same assuming it's shot by the same DP. What you're paying for really is the physical casing of the rehousing (materials, processing) and craftsmanship when it comes to pulling apart the optics and putting them all back together again. Losing the original casing of the lens and basically updating everything else. Modding is simply that, modding the existing lens, rehousing is a completely new lens. Some lenses can't be modified to PL for example, but can remedy that. Being able to adjust the focus and even in some cases improve the focus with a rehousing is also beneficial. Making the lens more versatile and better suited for video (90 focus throw converted to 270 plus better close focus distance than original lens). Value is very subjective, it's why I was clear out the gate this is not for everybody. The market is growing however, you have feature films and feature documentaries being shot with old glass (rehoused) which not only validates the old lenses and their quality, but most people don't need what commercial film productions need in terms of form factor. The way I consider it, I factor in what I get paid to shoot, what i need to budget for rentals and time to get the rentals. Also what I can do when I have access to something 24/7 (much better understanding of the nuances and how to exploit them). They're a business purchase so for me they have to be able to earn me money over time and based on the work I do I make my decision. Gear should be able to pay for itself over the course of a few commercial jobs, eventually you'll start profiting once that gear is "paid off". it's why I try not to comment much about "value" because we all work in differetn fields making different money and what is too expensive for one person may be just right for another. For me $5000 a lens for the Leica R's makes no commercial sense, but spending 6500 on a set of soviet lenses (6 lenses vs 3) is a more viable investment. If i were a rental house i would absolutely get my R's modded because they're starting to get more and more in demand. Anyway sorry for the long message, hopefully I was able to answer your question .Thanks for the support and the insightful question!

    Ya they share similar properties, but I don't work with classic zeiss lenses, I just prefer the historical significance of the older lenses. So that's a total preference.
