    It’s funny how on a busy set and audio calls for “ROOM TONE” how quickly that set will just immediately FREEZE. Room Tone really is one of those filmmaking nuances that makes ALL the sense in the world when you understand it and almost no sense when you don’t. Understanding it is my intention with this video because. TIME STAMPS: 0:32: What IS Room Tone? 1:38: What do we USE Room Tone for? 3:24: A few Rules when recording room tone 6:25: Post credit “scene”

    Totally agree. In production it's easy to get your head lost in all the things you need to do. Shooting scenes out of order, will this work with that? How will this cut together? Did I get what I need? It's VERY easy to forget because it involves you taking an actual moment of silence for yourself. Hopefully now people won't forget to record a little TONE to help their editor out ;)

    Thanks Simon, ya I was struggling with this one, it's not a super trendy topic by any means and it's not particularly sexy. Given how often I go to it when cutting dialogue especially on this show that recorded in tricky sound environments, ROOM TONE saved me when cutting to reaction shots and padding the beats for dramatic effect. I thought screw it, make it, but try to make it at least interesting. It really is super helpful, but not if people aren't engaged in it lol. I tried. Thanks for the kind words again mate. Great video! The early episodes of the Simpsons have that feel of lacking polish, but people can’t really identify exactly what it is - just something, “missing.” That “missing” thing that makes it feel too sterile is room tone and ambient sounds. Btw, many in the field call it, “atmo,” in addition to tone.

    For those who are looking to get into TV: We also usually film the mic with the main camera during room tone. This allows the editors to locate the 'room tone' fast when scrubbing through a take. Secondly, we also use room tone to build a 'noise profile' of the mic being used as each microphone has a base level of 'noise' that can be sampled and then used to remove the noise. The more room tone captured, the better the noise profile sample and thus the better the final audio mix down the line. Maybe that's another video Mark should make? Mark, solid mate. Really, really important stuff and you made it visually interesting. I remember shooting a documentary about Qantas and the soundo being perpetually stressed when we tried to nab quick OTFs. Glad I was a shooter and not a sound recordist :D

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    5 жыл бұрын

    Definitely, I was thinking whether or not I should go into sound profiles, but in the end for the sake of "flow" decided against it. Could be an entire video in of itself and I was already battling with the effort vs the reward on this one (how many people are going to end up watching a video about the sound of a room in silence?) Thanks mate, ya Room tone bothers people on set if they don't understand how critical it is to the final production. Part of my attempt to address that, knowledge brings understanding and everybody should be on the same page with this one.
