Filming with Vintage Lenses (the ultimate deep dive!)

Фильм және анимация

Real talk, most Vintage Lenses kinda suck, I know because I’ve used a whole lot of them in my work and never found anything I was happy with… until now. Trust me when I say you might need these vintage Leica’s in your life... But which of the holy trinity should you buy?
In this video we take a deep dive into the craze of using Vintage Lenses, why people pay so much for them and what do they bring to the table in terms of image quality for camera's like the Red Komodo and Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro? The Pro’s and Con’s of going Vintage and exactly what you’re letting yourself in for when looking for Leica’s. Zeiss, Helios, Takumar also get discussed with plenty of real world examples. Are you ready to get the Vintage Look??

Love your channel man. We’ve got a full set of Summicrons and also love them in the right conditions. Recently picked up a set of Fujinon MK-R’s (RF mount) for our Komodo’s and we’re super happy with them so far. Might be worth a rental if you’re looking for decent zooms.

Wow a full Summicron set! Lovely. Fujinon's also look great, but very happy with DZO Pictor's when zooms are required.

Awesome deep dive into vintage lenses. I bought a few Takumar lenses for fun to play with and I enjoy the image they produce for photos, which I mainly do, and for video, which I am getting into more and more. I also picked up a Helios 44M-5 f2, which is fun to play with. I bought these old lenses, which are in pristine shape, never thinking about making money with them, but more for having fun with the images they produce. Your set looks awesome, and I would love to have them, but I am old and retired so everything is about fun now! Thanks for the great video! Cheers from British Columbia, Canada!

I love Carl Zeiss lenses and Nikon Nikkor. Those are my favorite vintage lenses. I don't like SIGMA, but I also don't like "cheap vintage lenses". I like "good vintage" lenses that performs "good" and not cheap ;)

I did actually have a Nikkor set that I found really good. Sigma is too sharp, and yes give me good vintage over cheap vintage.... but I'd like both!! 😂

Perfect timing for a video on vintage lenses Guy! I had the vintage bug too - helios, biota, super tan, Olympus. I do like that fact that you can convert them to any body. I just ordered a Sigma FP which I plan to test them all out on again. Speaking of which have you tested out this camera yet? Seems like it would be a good, compact low cost body for a Savage Filmmaker!

Cheers Garfy! I almost ordered a Sigma FP a few weeks ago, it's a truly fascinating camera and one I'll definitely consider in the future. I ultimately decided not to due to file sizes and no IBIS which wouldn't suit one of my upcoming projects, but the image you can get is pretty amazing and I LOVE that size.

@@thesavagefilmmaker I don't have mine yet, so I've yet to see if I can handle the file sizes and workflow. It does have some shortcomings, but I think most of them I can work around by accessorizing it. I just think its a great value for the image quality in a small package.

For the love of video production and for the sake of just sharing and hopping to help other people like me (and you) that obsess on finding the an affordable cine lens set with a nice balance of character and sharpness and quality, after a lot time watching videos after videos , and looking at tones of pictures , think I am going to go for the SLR magic APO microprimes , especially the 32mm. Nice

Those SLR Microprimes do look really nice, as do the new Meike's full frames, if you're wanting something that is affordable and a little vintage but not inconveniently vintage!

how do you manage excessive shakiness? I'm using a 50mm 1.7 pentax lens on my fuji xt4 and I love the way it looks, but the footage is so shaky it's unusable. I was considering adding some weight, some handles, etc to help smooth the footage out a bit, but yh. Was wondering if anyone has an answer for that.

  • @thesavagefilmmaker

Best solution is to add weight, rails, follow focus and v-mount battery. The heavier it is the less jitters.

Man awesome video. Vintage glass akin to being a doting parent to a child that loves you to bits - that also runs off in public and eats cigarette butts. Was curious about your time tracking down that 19mm - Did/do you ever miss the addition of a WIDE angle to your set? Or did the projects using the 'film look' never require a field of view that wide?

  • @thesavagefilmmaker

    @thesavagefilmmaker

    Жыл бұрын

I have never really required a 19mm as the 24 or 28 seemed to do the job. Don't get me wrong it would be a really welcome addition and help in tighter spaces but the astronomical cost is something I just can't currently justify.
