Rehousing Vintage Lenses - The journey to cine lens masterpieces with G.L Optics - Epic Episode #19

Фильм және анимация

This episode it is all about rehousing - we are taking you along on the journey to “rehouse” our Canon FD Dreamset. We are going to take the mystery out of that process and give you super valuable tips and tricks, about judging , treating, cleaning, and working with vintage lenses.
We flew to China to show you - step by step - what happens in a rehousing process… and there is so much to learn here. We are going to give you a crash course in evaluating vintage lenses, and follow the rehousing process itself. We show you the disassembly, cleaning, machining, assembly, measuring, marking, engraving, painting and testing of our Canon FD set,
including a brand new super speed focal length.
We also had the chance to compare our FDs with a real K35 set, to do a bit of myth busting.
Get some popcorn, strap in… and lets head out to G.L Optics in China!
Terms and pricing for G.L optics rehousing:
Price for rehousing is 4.000 USD per lens - with a floating element, the pice is 5.000 USD per lens.
Delivery time is 2-4 months. G.L optics requires a 30% down payment before production starts. Rush orders & individual designs are possible. G.L Optics can source donor lenses for their customers and pre configured sets are available on cinemaglass.com/

@@MediaDivision Haha! If I were KZread, Netflix, BBC, or other big brands I would easily fund you to have your own series of "Optical Wonders" where you have all these insane builds and videos there. I hope you get enough cash to keep it going, this is a very expensive, yet so much needed field of documentaries.

I get it, it is way to niche... not even Netflix can afford to cater to 20.000 people. KZread is the way, and I am very glad that our members and manufacturers like G.L makes this somewhat feasible. I just wish I could do it full time@@Bo_Hazem

@@MediaDivision You are an inspiration to many. I also started making documentaries about stuff I like and no money in return but very happy fulfilling my passion. Keep up the great work and I think GL gained more from this deal working with such a talented and dedicated production company. Maybe more short films in the future like that underwater one? This is not just a "KZread video". This is a legit documentary about rehousing. The production on this one is unreal. Most of the so-called "premium" platforms don't have this kind of quality on their projects, and these guys give us FREE! This masterpiece deserves more than 5 million views instead of 50k, and this channel deserves 18 million instead of 180k. MediaDivision is the most underrated channel on KZread. Thank you so much for your effort and dedication to your work. God bless you.

Cheers Dicky… very much appreciated! It is hard to put out this production value on a tiny budget… thanks to our members and sponsors it is possible at all. I am all for millions of views and subs… but then… our subject(s) are for a tiny group of people. I have no illusions about that, and neither does KZread. If views would be a driving factor, I had to make videos about Botox. Thank for your kindness and for being on our journey with us.

" YOU BET YOUR ASS I WANT TO " Dude. I can't stop laughing. Seriously. Also -- you are THE king, for actually demystifying this subject. Nobody, and I mean, absolutely NOBODY has made anything about this. At least that I am aware of. Literally prepping a feature right now and couldn't believe my luck at seeing this uploaded. I've been trying to re-house a 17-35 Contax N for ages (I know that it's possible, not just because it's been done for Canon EF, but because a bud of mine who works at Panavision informed me the Panavision LWZ 17.4-34mm IS the Contax N). Also, I love how serene this one is, and thoughtful. Among your episodes, this one is one of your warmest on a human level ;) Oh and also getting a FULL K35 to FD SIDE BY SIDE IS SUCH A TREAT OMFG. Love the mythbusting, love the folks at GL, and love the insight into the process

Thanks a lot… I was hoping to convey the complex "why"… but in one sentence: "because the high end customers demands it this way"… and of course, it is very different to putting big wheels on a Lamborghini. Some aspects of the size have to do with technical necessities, but most have to do with standardisation that is expected on such productions. The original housing is next to unusable in those contexts - hence, the modification.

My pick would be both the Nikon's and Canon's from the 1970's - 80's. Both 50 or 55mm f1.2, 105mm f1.8, and 35mm f1.4. It is a kind and gracious deed for G&L to allow you to film their work. It is not often one sees fine craftsmanship on display.

Wow, I always wondered how rehousing is done. For the amount of work and materials it is actually quite cheap. I guess the look is virtually identical to the original K35 according to your previous video, even though you couldn't test it this time. Thanks for giving us insides. In what kind of production those lenses are intented to be used? The are to precious only to be stored on a shelf.

  • @MediaDivision

I guess I will use them on all those productions that I consider worthy… and why would I produce something that is not worth my, or your time ;-) These are not suitable for run and gun though… so, expect me to use something else on BTS shootings. Look wise, they are next to identical. There was a certain someone I met (can't say who) and he used both a lot and had them side by side … he can't tell the difference, and if he can't…I guess nobody can!

Great video! Just want to point out that deposit payment for Whitepoint Optics rehousing is 25% and I've heard that TLS deposit payment is 10%. Cheers! - Lauri Suokas, Whitepoint Optics CTO

  • @MediaDivision

    @MediaDivision

    2 ай бұрын

Thank you… for all mentions and to simplify the chart and it's meaning (there are different charges at different times for each rehouser), we explicitly mention what % has to be paid for production to START, not to get a place in the cue or point of refund-ability, or something like that. In the end, the customers are interested in how long they have to spare what liquidity. Our offer from Whitepoint looks as following regarding deposit payments: The payments are divided into four parts, below is an explanation of the payment structure: 25% of the total amount is paid as a deposit when you want to reserve your slots. This is non-refundable. 25% of the total amount is paid for ordering parts. 25% of the total amount is paid at the start of production. 25% of the total amount is paid upon delivery. Payments must be made 100% to start the delivery process. So, it is actually 75% by that measure. If this has changed in the last month we are sorry and happy for you to point it out here. We can have a correction sentence in the description. Did you actually change deposit policy since February? About the same story with TLS. Zero is a bit more complex (regarding refund-ability) but it just makes it confusing.

This is pure Cinematic Optical Cosmic Bliss. It's amazing how GL Optics managed to do all that work in a short time, with such precision and beauty. This documentation is a masterclass of definitive know hows in cinematic optics. Because the knowledge it gives, one can expand in a lot of other subjects, and conclude many stuff discussed in so many forums all these last 6 or 7 years. This a really good conclusion that myth busted for me, for example, the real differences between the K 35's and the FDs. The jokes, Snatch Cameos and stealing the K 35 were amazing! Can't thank you enough for all of this. Greetings!

You guys always do such amazing work! Like usual very thorough and with such stellar production values. I knew rehousing was a complex endeavor but this really helps me to appreciate just how much tech, labor, and expertise goes into it. It was also very helpful to see that example of balsam separation that appears more like specks or splotches, rather than haze. Just about anyone who likes to collect vintage glass might benefit from that evaluation section.

Man I love the fact that for some section of the video, the right channel just has the raw sounds from the factory playing. It was distracting for the 1st thirty seconds but I can't emphasize how nice and calming it becomes soon after. Even when the noise was loud and chaotic, somehow the rawness of it was soothing to me Idk if this is an artistic choice or just a mistake but I genuinely love this mixture or surreal music alongside actual real sounds while filming.

Great video and good sense of humour. I purchased a set of GL Optics Leica R primes 6 years ago. There was a back focus issue with the 28mm, 35mm and 50mm on delivery. GL Optics replaced all 3 lenses for free without question. I ended up buying their Canon 70-200mm, Angenieux 45-90mm and Tokina 100mm macro. I’m still using everything 6 years later. Definitely recommended for premium rehousing.

Awesome episode! My guess of the mystery lens is that element has been placed in contact with an organic material, which induced reaction with the coating, changing the color/roughness. I am not certain of what kind of reaction, but it likely requires oxygen/water in addition to the coating and the contact material, which explains why it is not present in the middle and around the edges. Also, did you just read the Cine Lens Manual?
