Canon FD & K35 - Legendary cine lenses on a budget - Epic Episode #14

Фильм және анимация

The ultimate guide to Canon FD - with history and versions, similarities in image and design, coatings, aspherical elements and radioactivity, and how to develop a set on a budget.
We also explore the Canon K35… so:
Are there Canon FD lenses that give us the look of the Canon K35 in a somewhat affordable way?
We talk to an award winning filmmaker that uses Canon FD and test the most important lenses. We DIY declick and change the mount, and test sophisticated modding by Simmod. We heal Thorium tint, discuss the value & where to buy, and explain how to spot counterfeit lenses.
We will show you how we did the Aliens effect shots… using Filmconvert Nitrate.
Don't miss the sequel to this episode: we turn our FD set into real cine lenses!

    (Updated Remarks upon Updated Remarks) - I was able to snag a 24mm f1.4 SSC Aspherical for a fair price! It's so exciting to know that I'll be a proud owner of legendary cinema glass! In fact, I'll have an entire lookalike K35 set, with the 35 and 55 swapped for non-radioactive counterparts because...well...radiation! I'll admit I spent a while searching and waiting for the 24L, but my other red-ringed FD's have been hit-or-miss. So when the SSC came up, I realized my patience had been rewarded and I went for it! I'm assuming both the SSC and L have a rotating front, so I guess I don't lose anything there. - The 80-200L is a beast, apparently it's as sharp as a prime, and it has macro throughout the ENTIRE range! However, like the 28-85 f/4, it doesn't have much dampening when focusing. Since these were produced toward the very end of the FD line, I assume this was intentional. - The 20-35L and 24-35L--both similar, yet different. Which is better? The former gets wider and matches the 35-105 in terms of flare, but the latter focuses closer than the 20-35 and has flares that match the SSC lenses. I find these are the major factors between these siblings. - I have to check my 50 1.2L, but I've got my fingers crossed that it'll be a worthy contender to being a part of my K35 kit! (Updated Remarks on additional lenses) - I previously referred to the lack of sentiment I felt toward the 28mm f2 SSC compared to others. However, I had a change of heart and found that I couldn't reject its warm image and flares. Although I sold my copy in August and feared I would never find the lens again, I managed to get another copy of the lens recently! Unlike the 35mm f2 SSC, it does not suffer from a telescoping design, and the lens does not move when focusing. - The 24mm/28mm/35mm f2 lenses make for a lovely trio. Their flares are quite extraordinary, clean and reserved, unlike anything I have ever seen from Canon. However, of three 28mm nFD copies I have run into, two of them have had some trouble with either inner construction or optics. However, the images from the lens are rendered beautifully. - The 55mm 1.2 SSC is a beauty. Wide-open, the lens has a very inviting softness. I'm not sure how I feel about the ring-flare wide open, but it has a remarkable Panavision/Cooke flare when stopped down that cannot be replicated by any other lens. One anecdote I can share is that I have had two non-modded versions of this lens, and both suffered from focus rings that were hard to turn, if not impossible. Something to keep in mind. - I previously mentioned that the 35-105 f3.5 was not parfocal. Since then, I have put two versions of this lens on a Canon A1 and have concluded that the optical element in FD-EOS adapters is responsible for this lack of consistent focus. However, this does not guarantee that every copy of the lens is parfocal. - The design of the 70-210 f/4 allows for smooth in-camera zooms. It is also parfocal and has a beautiful warm flare. - I will comment on the 85mm 1.2L and 1.8 after I get those converted, but I will say the L suffers from the "plastic" feeling mentioned below, perhaps due to the age of my particular copy. (Earlier Comments) Going to add my few cents here as an FD owner. - FD lenses are better weighted, and their focus rings have more resistance. Quite a few nFD lenses that I have suffer from "clicks" when turning the focus ring to either side. Perhaps this is due to pre-owned usage over time. However, as MD pointed out, FD lenses have the follow focus issue due to their telescoping design. - Judging from photos online, such as ones from Flickr, I too would not recommend the 24mm f2. The bokeh is very smeary wide open, and as MD points out here, it's soft wide open. You'd have to stop down to 2.8 for an improvement sharpness, but at that point, you're loosing out on the circular-shaped bokeh the 2.8 already has. The 24mm 2.8 is so sharp wide open and the bokeh is lovely (you even get Super Speed-esque shapes stopped down!) I can't recommend it enough. The 28mm 2.8 nFD is another great lens, with its only real disadvantage being its 5-bladed aperture. However, it's so sharp wide open that you may never have to stop it down at all! - Zoom lover? There is a 35-105 f3.5 available, but I would be very cautious with these. A majority of these are not parfocal--despite being advertised as such. - Got any other Q's? Let me know!

  • @caldera878

    @caldera878

    The 'clicks' are a know issue in the focusing mechanism from the material Canon used as roller bearings for fast lenses with floating elements. The decades old bearings deteriorate giving way to the focusing play and eventual optical issues.

    @@gintautasberzinskas3743 That's a great question! I would say the 35-105 f3.5 is a great lens for those scenarios. The 70-210 f4 is another fantastic lens, you can get it for cheap and the quality is beautiful. It focuses a foot closer than the 35-105, but the range is not the most accomodating, so you'd have to keep that in mind. Looked through my collection and the only FD lens I found was a 50mm f1.8 from late 70s. I know a little more now about how they can be adapted. I only had a chance to test it by whacking and had to bypass iris control get it wide open. My 3D printer stopped functioning correctly while I was printing a testing adapter to MFT and now I got a shift adapter. Spent a few hours yesterday looking at vintage cine glass. As I am only at S16 or MFT sensor size, most of the FD stuff is far to narrow for me and not practical. I found some almost local offers for Schneider Kreuznach 10mm and 16mm c mount lenses that do look nice and compact. While there is also 10mm Arri 1.6 lens with c mount for a really good price. Som bertithiot pan Cinor were initially meant for Bolex and I got the 10-30 mm d mount version with OVF on my Bolex in the display cabinet. However the S16 version of the 25-100 is still on the wider end. But gives and OVF to some small cinema cameras you wouldn't expect. There is a set of Schneider Xenon 0.95 S16 which do cover a little less than than the Voigtländer Nokton 0.95 MFT set. But the price is equal. So I am undecided. Lens rehousing looks really expensive, but I wonder if you can get by for cheaper if you only need focussing no zoom, not iris. Just focus, focus scale and mount.... Probably worth a shot to contact all the different lens modding experts I Germany. I got a 150mm f/1 (no iris) Germanium infrared lens that I am going to take apart to remove the camera stuck on its back. But getting a rehousing done for this huge of lens will be expensive, but I rather break the housing that the military controlled front element. As there is ITAR implications, I can't easily ship these lenses outside the country or the EU. I took a 50mm Tessar apart once and it never got back together. As there are a few tutorials online, but Soo many different versions of a Zeiss 50mm Tessar f/2.8

    I have been shooting 35mm film for over 50 years. I started on the Canon FL lenses and moved on to the FD. Whenever I sell some of my excess lenses, it's almost always to cinematographers or studios. I think they are the best quality lenses at their price point. I recall going to a Kubrick exhibit at the Los Angeles County Art Museum. They had a large display of the lenses that he used. He also used a number of 35mm camera lenses that he adapted to his Arriflex. Some of these lenses had extensive custom mounts so it was clear that he was aiming for specific optical characteristics that he could not find in a cine lens.

  • @MediaDivision

    @MediaDivision

    3 жыл бұрын

    It is a good question why he did, and nobody can really answer that. Kubrick did shoot on Zeiss Super Speeds later on, that are just as fast as the K35 and where already available at the time of Barry Lyndon. One idea would be, that the K35 produce less vignetting shot wide open as they are designed for a larger format.

    As someone who uses FD lenses quite a lot on modern digital gear, Ripley's "We tried to get it off, it wouldn't come off, later it seemed to come off by itself and die" is far too good a description of my first experiences with the breech lock FD mount than I'd probably like to admit - you certainly soon learn to not blindly twist things when hunting for the aperture!

  • @MediaDivision

I guess that there are not that many people who take the subject that seriously...and even Filmriot doesn't have 2 million. Who cares... as long as I have people like you who really appreciate what we are doing. Thank YOU for hanging with us!!!

    @@MediaDivision My pleasure. Yeah, I'll download those cool things and store them for projects that will happen at some point. PS. If you haven't already, I'd be thrilled to hear what you think of these vintage Russian lenses (Helios, Mir, etc). Using old gear like that is appealing to me both as it's a very romantic approach to filmmaking and because it's so shockingly inexpensive. However I (and my small team) are pretty convinced by your Canon FD recommendation and that's what we're aiming for right now. Cheers.

    @@kentjensen4504 Well, I have never shot those Soviet lenses, so I can not give you a sophisticated opinion. From what I have seen (largely on the VLEV FB group) is that they have to0 much character for most applications, but as they are cheap.... why not, if one is after an extreme look. Like Benjamin does in our FD episode, they pair well with anamorphic. Iron Glass has very affordable rehousings for those

    Really loved this documentation and comparison of the lenses! I watched it twice, the first when I was cooking and the second sat down with a cup of coffee with more attention! Unfortunately the amount of mid roll adverts made watching this without add blocker nearly impossible and really infuriating. I really appreciate all the work that goes into these episodes! I would appreciate it if we could have less adverts as this really encouraged me to turn back on ad block as the adverts were really jarring and degraded the experience. As you can see I am a supporter, just on scott tier because i don't . But I believe in your vision and want to support the team. I hope you take into consideration the criticism.

    There is a little known sleeper lens in the range which is nigh-on impossible to find. The 28mm f2 SSC (breech lock version). Unique and amazing optics, not found in the later nFD version. Much better than the 35mm f2 concave. It took me months to find one in usable condition, I guess they weren’t popular at the time.

    “not found in the later nFD version” as in that the optics aren’t as “Unique and amazing” from the nFD? Because a nFD 28mm f.2 does exist.

    Look out for rotten roller bearings on these lenses with floating elements. They can be problematic if you can feel some focusing ring play especially for the optical block as this will negatively affect optical performance.

    @@MediaDivision Here's an update that may be relevant to anyone considering converting their FD's to EF mounts. I had a set modded by Simmod: 28mm, 35mm, 55mm and 70-210mm. Overall, turned out alright. I'm using the BMPCC 6K. The major issue is that when using the Nano Nucleus, it pulls the lens, creating a jolt in the image. I contacted Ron (owner of Simmod) about the issue, and he said it's not the modded EF mount or the P6K mount, but an issue with the majority of FD's. Ron said, "the focus barrel is stiff-or stiff compared to a normal modern lens. So when the focus motor tries to turn the barrel, the lens and mount work in conjunction to absorb that force. This is what's causing the wiggle because you’re putting so much force on the barrel to turn the lens. The lens isn’t turning smoothly as it should, so it’s pushing the force onto the rest of the mount and body." In fact, he's discontinuing modding services on FD lenses across the board because of this and other issues. It's a shame because the image quality is fantastic. If anyone has any ideas how to remedy this issue, I'd love to hear. Pretty sour about pouring a couple thousand into the lenses and mods and having this issue.

  • @MediaDivision

    @MediaDivision

    @@weightlessfilms5651 all mine work fine. Of course the wiggle comes from the bayonet mount if high torque os applied... you should see how much torque some vintage PL lenses need. A locking mount (like the EF displayed in the video) on the MAVO helps a ton. Not an option for the 6K. If the barrel is stiff because it's warped, grease will not help
