    Right on Mark! I'll add, that mirrorless was like the "second coming" for vintage lenses for me. 1. It enabled me to get a really big lens that I would never be able to afford if buying a modern AF lens (FD 500mm f4.5L for me), but before mirrorless that meant being completely locked into a huge investment in one mount. I've used my Canon lens on Olympus 4/3rds, Fuji APS-C and Sony FF. 2. I never would have been able to afford a FF camera if all my legacy lenses couldn't be swapped between mounts. Having dual (or more) systems that all use the same lenses via adapters means different angle of view for different lenses and no need to re-buy anything except adapters. 3. Manual focus aids are getting better and better as well and there is still a lot of room to improve that is only hanging on processing power. So now I shoot an A7Rii with lenses from Canon and Olympus that I've had for years.

  • @MarkHoltze

    Totally! I've been using them on my on my cinema camera for awhile, but got my first Sony mirrorless back in 2016 and my photography game was changed. Been doing reviews on my lenses to help showcase what these are capable of. I know a lot of people like to write them off and that's fine, but they've been instantly valuable to me so happy to share that :).

With adapters for a nicely rigged Cannon 7D and direct on my RED ONE MX. You can't beat the look. Have Russian and Carl Ziess Jenas PL mount for my Sony F35 "The Beast" and the Canon 7D PL from FGV. A side note: The reason I love the Pre 1986 Nikkors is because they used Lead in the Glass. It gives a great character to the look.

Aside from a little nick on the built-in lens hood, it's in beautiful like-new condition. $245 + 15 for shipping. Feels like a steal. Adapted to my Nikon Z6 II with an Urth adapter off of Amazon. Very solid connection. I definitely prefer this to the old Nikon 180mm f/2.8 manual focus lens.

    Again a great video and you also a happy new year Mark. I love my old lenses and would never give them for the reasons you call them. I like the feel when I work with them and photograph the decelerated. It makes you think a lot more about your image and the composition. But one of the most important points is the own character of the old treasures. New lenses partly too sterile and characterless...But what I appreciate most is that I know that I can probably still use my old lenses in 10, 20 or 30 years because, as I said, you only need a cheap adapter. Today's lenses probably won't get this luck anymore because of all the electronics and software that is needed

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's true though, all the electronics etc really distance the human factor and in a weird way remove some of the artisan craft from it. I know they serve a purpose, not everybody enjoys the process, and some aspects of photography require that...but that's a whole other level. Thanks for taking the time to make some great points!

  • 4 жыл бұрын

    @@MarkHoltze Yep, I absolutely love the Canon 50mm 1.4. I don't use a speed booster for now since I don't have the budget for it. After 35Y of shooting any format I had to give up film as in Italy is very difficult to process them (unless doing your BW in house). So I sold my EOS3 to buy 5DM3. Very happy it but I was missing something... time. Time to compose, time to adjust DOF time to think. Finally I bought a 7RII, cannot be happier. I travel a lot for work in countries like India and this little tiny gem fits everywhere and coupled with Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 people would not notice it while when around with 5DM3 and 24-70 you surely dono't walk by without bringing attention on you. Moreover I had from my father all vintage Rokkor lens from 21 to 500 and I have so much fun and the quality of the images (to me) is just fantastic... Thanks for your review Mark!

    Vintage lenses have been my go-to lately but sometimes I wish they had autofocus so I could get the shot faster. You know what? Having manual focus lenses has helped me take an extra few seconds (or maybe a full minute? :p ) to think about what I'm shooting and how I want the photo to turn out. They've helped me improve my photography immensely...even if my photos are still on a newb level.

  • @MarkHoltze

    @MarkHoltze

    I know how you feel, sometimes just messing around with the focus gives you some ideas on your composition and focus. I think depending on what camera you have, there are some adapters now that can add auto focus to your lenses. I think it needs to be phase shift or something for the fotodiox one. My sony a7sii doesn't have that so I can't test it out.

    CAUTION: very ADDICTIVE! Trying out vintage lenses leads to collecting them, which turns ya into a lens-head. For me, it started a few years ago with an amazing deal on a Canon AE-1 kit with FD lenses and now I have maybe 200 lenses. I managed to put together a fairly complete Canon FD kit 17-500mm for less than $300. Then I splurged and found a pristine Canon FDn 85mm/1.2 L for more $$, but still half of the current motorized versions. This addiction led to another: converting lenses from fixed-lens rangefinder cameras that, for some reason, tend to have lenses with amazing performance. Just finished extracting, converting and adapting a Yashinon-DX (Tomioka, mano!) 45mm/1.4 lens from a mid-1960s Yashica rangefinder. I'm in love with too many of my mistresses! Great and clearly presented video.

    Happy New Year, Mark! Convincing, yet not pushy reasons. Well done. Have several Takumars and old Nikons. Zone focusing is a breeze when the lens has a focus distance scale/aperture DoF marking - markings sadly missing from many modern lenses. Folks who are accustomed to Lightroom’s auto lens adjustments should expect to spend a bit of effort to manually adjust for CA and distortions - the vintage lens likely won’t be among the program’s drop-down list.

    Hi Mark. Great video!! I’ve loved my transition back into film. So much so that I rarely use digital at all. I was late to the digital party and still shooting film up to 2010. Reluctantly moved to digital and the last year happily reignited my love for film and I now have the same buzz that I had previously lost during digital. Yeah prices are high, Kodak prices have gone up but people need to be thankful we can still get film and great lenses. Thanks for the videos and keeping it very much ‘real’

    I have a few of these old lenes that I just love. They are well worth having and you'll find that they'll complement your new lenses if you take the time to learn how to use them. Resist the urge to collect them, you don't need many, just learn to use the ones you have. That's what we did back in the days of the SLRs. There is a place for autofocus and image stabilization and they are great but you can do things with old lenses with full manual control that will surprise you.

    Nice video. I’m not a video guy, but totally get why videographers in particular like old manual lenses. Someone did a video on Ironglass lenses, who specialise in modding old Soviet lenses, starting with the Helios 44-2 (I expect because the -2 is so numerous and has the character sought after), a Mir, and I think Jupiter-9. It’s interesting how they retool them in new bodies with more aperture blades and make these largish sets of film prime lenses from 50-year-old Soviet lenses that look like expensive high-end film lenses, but with character. For photographers like me, modern mirrorless makes them viable again, but mostly for “slow’’ photography, where you walk around taking your time; though with practice and properly-lubed vintage lenses, you can focus pretty quickly, it helps if you come from a film background I guess. I got a 44-2 when I only had a Canon DSLR, I quickly gave up on it though, as Live View shooting on their SLRs is unbearably slow for some reason. Maybe not so much these days? Both Canon and Nikon are moving rapidly to mirrorless, with the possible exception of the high-end, I doubt they will make any more consumer SLRs. I opted for Fuji for walk-around Street shooting though for their quality small primes, and have a small collection of vintage lenses, mostly Soviet, as I just love the look of the old silver ones.

    I took my Canon 800D to Sweden this past week and I shot most of my trip on an Olympus OM 35-70mm F4 and a Super Takumar 50mm F1.8 with focus confirm chips in the adapters. Probably the most fun I've had with my camera in a long while, and my partner preferred using the manual lenses as a first timer because it's much more tactile - The concept of aperture is far easier to learn when you can see in real time how it works. Plus the images look really interesting in a good way. Vintage lenses are so worth it!

You learn to recognize what lena you shoot stuff at based on the focal length FOV if shooting primes.

  • @photog1529

    Yep, most vintage lenses are built like tanks, especially the older Canon FD lenses (new FD uses a lot more plastic). For compactness, you can't beat the Olympus OM lenses...excellent performers in a very small package...some can literally fit in your pocket. I like my vintage lenses for three reasons...(1) the look/rendering, (2) you can really dial-in the focus with the longer focus throw as compared to AF lenses in manual focus mode, (3) Depth-of-field scales to aid in hyperfocal distance focusing (if you're a landscape shooter, using hyperfocal is a huge benefit). I still like my Canon 5D4 and EF lenses, but most of the time I grab my Sony A7R2 and a few of my Canon FD or Nikon manual focus lenses.

    I love old lenses and just for the reasons (except I do not do video) you stated. I have a large assortment of soviet lenses, and several copies and flavors of some like the Helios-44. Also shoot IR on a full spectrum Z6. One of my favorite things about these old lenses is that I can insert the IR filter between the camera and the lens using a RAFCAMERA adapter and a chinese helicoid. I can shoot any M42, Exakta, Topcor (wow!!!), Pentax 6x7, Canon FD, even Nikon AI and more with the filter between the camera and the lens. Some of these lenses are perfect for IR with absolutely no hotspots. I have a regular Z6 and I can use the same setup (minus the IR filter) on it. I have even gotten into mounting IMAX Schneider theater lens on a helicoid. With a helicoid you can push the macro focusing distance much closer on just about any old lens.

    @@MarkHoltze The theater lenses are best for macro and closeup as their infinity sharpness is not in the same league as a normal lens. But I have used them like a regular lens. None of the projector lenses have an aperture, and at least one of them has an incredible bokeh. Google Leica Colorplan 90mm f2.5. This lens come from a Leitz 35mm slide projector and it probably the best slide projector lens around. I picked up my copy from shopgoodwill on the web. I try and cycle thru the lenses every so often, but I do not have anything on my facebook page documenting the various image to which lenses. The movie theater lenses are larger and have a following for portrait work and I think some movie work. Here is a link that shows you what these lenses look like. I was out checking for IR hotspots on my copies of both the theater and slide projector lenses today. I picked up my cinelux lenses off of ebay. www.theboutiquelens.com/blog/a-guide-to-the-legendary-cinelux

    I pretty much owe my career to vintage lenses. I bought a Minolta Rokkor-X 50mm F1.7 for a few bucks in a thrift store, and that thing got me through my first year of paid gigs. The quality of my images jumped up, and I had such a blast shooting with them. Now, they only see the light of day when I'm shooting video, but it's always fun to have them around. I should use them some more :)

    Great video Mark , I really enjoyed it. First for me is charecter and then build quality (the price is a bonus). Actually I moved to mirrorless technology a year ago , buying the EOS R, only to be able to use all my old vintage lenses. The manual focusing smoothness, aperture control flow, the build is to be used forever and most importantly the IQ , special, own charecteristics, not the clinical, same, boring, repetitive images made by all.

    @@MarkHoltze Man, using over 20 vintage lenses on the R is a pleasure (that combo use and rendering just works). I have only 1 RF lens and have no plans on buying more, tried some of them but the magic of the 50mm L f1.2, 85mm L f1.2,135mm L f2 (or even the 35mm f2) is something that the new RF glass doesn't have. The R is an excellent camera and the EF adapter works as if the lenses are on a 1dx II/5DII/5DIV and sometimes even better (in the case of 50m L f1.2 for example).

    They're not, mostly because the people who are buying them know the value of them. The good news, you ever try to sell them in a few years, you'll sell them for MORE than what you paid for them. Despite the heavy advertising of modern gear, there is a wave of mainstream that is going to start taking notice of this stuff. Especially as the cost of lenses goes up, mirrorless ones especially.

    It's worth noting that people need to familiarize themselves with registry distances, and how something like an M39 mount is more likely to be an LTM (which will require a lens adapter to allow for proper focusing vs most SLR registry distance), as M42 is more likely to be an SLR variant. The Super Takumar 50mm F/1.4 should pretty much be standard for any photographer, but also a Leica Summilux-R will also be adaptable by replacing the bayonet mount to a Minolta/Sony A-mounts (which also has some pretty decent lenses such as the G lenses, or the 100mm macro lens.) These are also adaptable to E-mount which are a decent one to use for most vintage lenses. Takumar is much sharper focused for reading small text, but a Leica is consistent throughout, and some recommend using the same types of lenses in order to develop an iconic "identity" with the photographers style.
