Handcrafted, good old fashioned, low budget Practical Effects!
When i watched Jurassic Park for the first time as a child, my parents where astonished when they found a 1,8m long and 1,4m long velociraptor made of paper mâché in my room the next day.
Whereas i was frustrated because it didn´t look and move like in the movie..
Since then i love practical Effects and see them as the glue that makes the movie world believable and pulls you in it. Like a magic trick!
And that´s what Practical Effects Guy is all about.. find out how the magic works and create our own magic!

Please someone explain? all i see is a girl running up to a cabinet and opens it, what should i be seeing or not seeing??
I'm still convinced that any normal cameraman could reproduce this easier, by memorizing the set's floorplan, then shooting the scene from the mirror of the medicine cabinet itself, to which he'd be attached. The last part of the scene is just a short zoom out. I'm even convinced THATS how Contact did it; and they're just lying now. Look at the lighting difference of that shot from Contact; it's different because they shot it from the glass, like I'm suggesting. Would you have to make a rig? Yes. But what's a steady-cam, but a rig. ...So to be clear, I'm saying it was all done "in camera" with no greenscreening et. The trick was getting the cameraman to memorize the floorplan, and sticking him into a rig that houses the medicine cabinet. He'd have to be at an angle, so he doesn't show up in the mirror, but that angle also allows him to see in enough whats actually in front of this rig.
Wow, great video 👍
Nice! Having seen recent explanations by the director, looks like the only thing you didn’t do was build a full mirror flipped set to shoot on 😊
oof... didn´t even know they did that. that´s wild !!! xD
@@PracticalEffectsGuy this one 😊 kzread.info/dash/bejne/eoWG15ucqpiyaag.htmlsi=67gkOGnkW_nxWaDq
You forgot to mention a genius part of the shot in the movie. They reversed/flipped the entire set (as in rebuilt it) for the mirror shot.
Didn't they just horizontally flip the shot? Making it an actual reflection?
This was just awesome! I love that movie so much. Two minor quibbles. There's no spilled popcorn in your gaffer tape scene. :-P And you can't cast a shadow on a decent mirror. That's not how mirrors work, LOL. When I was much younger, say, 27 years ago, I tried to figure out how this shot could be made with 100% practical effects. What I came up with is a rig where the medicine cabinet was float-mounted to the front of the camera at a 45º angle, and the whole running scene is filmed through the mirror. Upon reaching the bathroom there's a magnetic mount where the mirror sticks to the bathroom wall (releasing the camera mount), and the actress can open it. Of course, in _Contact,_ the angle isn't 45º but it would be a cool shot to do anyway. Cheers!
haha! gosh.. that´s a next level channel or format, to do such effects 100% practical. Always bugs me, that most of the time you still end up with after effects comps, green screen or something like that. would love to see your attempt. you´re absolutly right. that must work! x) thanks for your comment! greatly appreciate it! cheers!
@@PracticalEffectsGuy Upon re-reading my original comment, I may have given the impression that I actually did it. I apologize! I meant to say "what I came up with _in my mind_ was..." LOL. I thought your recreation of the mirror scene was really, really good. 🙂
@@FlatEarthMath all good i didn´t get it this way. but it´s never too late to do something xD hehe. thx mate x)
I appreciate you effort man 👍 Keep sharing knowledge
Du bist deutsch ne ?
did you get a p6 to e mount adapter for the 80mm?
exactly. mine is from "hartblei" if i´m not mistaken. those kind of adapters are rare, but they do exist x)
Nice work, nice girl :V
Dude you’re hilarious. Thanks!
Excellent presentation !! Bravo!! We hope it will go on.
shoot man! i went and got some shit at the hood before i pressed play again and now what should i do with all this meth, LOLOL nice video!
It's a very stylised look. If that is what the rest of your film looks like then trying to make a real bathroom work would have broken the look you were going for.
The advertizement i got before this video was of a woman giving her literal 6 month old child a cheese grater to play with
what the.... ?! :D long live the algorithm!!
Alright, now do the hotel fight from Inception/anti gravity from 2001 Space Odessy
They're called corner braces
Aw damn I don’t know no Germans or Herman’s I’m f*ckd already
😁
Dude, wo bist du hin? Deine Videos waren erste Sahne und dein Humor is oberfein! Hör ja nicht auf Mensch!
FYI, they recreated this now-iconic mirror shot almost exactly the same way at the very beginning of Consecration (2023) because it is the same actress, only now she is an adult. It happens at the 4-minute mark!
Well done. Looks good. Latex inner bladder, foam rubber outer skin. Makes it look dry. Hope this helps.
I just found this channel and got really excited that there is a practical effects channel, and then immediately realized this is the first and last video. That's a shame, the quality of this video was amazing.
I want a hobbit based house 🏠 I long for one! It's my cosy dream house where I can meditate and write books.
totally feel that!
Still didnt understand. That is makes me feel stupid
The genius of the shot is, the person who conceived it to begin with. "Easy" when you know how.
Don't waste my time with your childish nonsense, please.
Wow, this was a mindblowing shot in 1996. The entire theater was silent for this and the opening zoom out. Thank you for explaining it.
Im just doing the samething bro! "Schneider Kreuznach DKL Lens Set" 28-35-50-135" :)
Hey thanks for the funny video. Can you convert my Zeiss lenses to Cine style? How can I contax you? 😀
put a layer of hydrophobic material on it?
Great breakdown man! Just one question, why are u mentioning the pan to emulate the opening of the mirror? I don't see that shot in the final scene 😂
Thanks, very informative!
Should have had a grip to secure that light
This can also be done without video editing using a camera dolly with cabinet built on the dolly and the camera pointed at the glass.
What I want to know is how they did the beach scene. How'd they find an alien who so perfectly resembled David Morse, and how did they know he'd resemble Ellie's dad? That's pretty shocking.
Prices must have changed a little bit ;)
Am I the only one who's totally enchanted by that lovestory???
Should anyone tell him that imperial and metric are both taught in american schools?
It's a tricky stunt to pull off, but when done right CGI can't touch it. At least not yet
Can i buy it from you?
I did the same with Mamiya lenses and this video helped me so much. Also I must be watching this for the nth time and 3:57 still cracks me up like shit
In American "English"(sic?) those silver metal supports are called 'angle brackets'.
Please be back
Beautiful to see love between a man and a dwarven maiden.
This is terrible, fan made, home made. I am going to call lawyers to check on the legality of this clip. All hail Hydra.
Great video!
Meth is anything but boring, sir
You are amazing! I have searched for you elsewhere online and can’t find you! I hope you are still planning to make more content. I enjoy watching your videos a lot, even on videos where I know the information delivered I just want to watch more! Please tell me I am missing something and you have another channel with many more video?!
Yes! Don’t like CGI
