You forgot to mention a genius part of the shot in the movie. They reversed/flipped the entire set (as in rebuilt it) for the mirror shot.

As a photographer I knew it was something like that, but I wanted to see if it was the case. But usualy the most mindblowing shots are always pretty simple tricks done extrêmely well. I remember that when I was at school, we had to make a commercial for a product. I was asign a parfume product, and the teacher was really like "what the hell is he doing" while I was in the studio, until she saw what I made with it afterward. It's the same for every form of art, in music, usualy when you look at a Beethoven/Brahms/Elgar/Debussy/Ravel/Bach/... piece, the structure of the piece is simple, the melody is easy to sing and the harmony is so well made that it looks easy, but making something like that is far from easy. ^^

This was just awesome! I love that movie so much. Two minor quibbles. There's no spilled popcorn in your gaffer tape scene. :-P And you can't cast a shadow on a decent mirror. That's not how mirrors work, LOL. When I was much younger, say, 27 years ago, I tried to figure out how this shot could be made with 100% practical effects. What I came up with is a rig where the medicine cabinet was float-mounted to the front of the camera at a 45º angle, and the whole running scene is filmed through the mirror. Upon reaching the bathroom there's a magnetic mount where the mirror sticks to the bathroom wall (releasing the camera mount), and the actress can open it. Of course, in _Contact,_ the angle isn't 45º but it would be a cool shot to do anyway. Cheers!

I'm still convinced that any normal cameraman could reproduce this easier, by memorizing the set's floorplan, then shooting the scene from the mirror of the medicine cabinet itself, to which he'd be attached. The last part of the scene is just a short zoom out. I'm even convinced THATS how Contact did it; and they're just lying now. Look at the lighting difference of that shot from Contact; it's different because they shot it from the glass, like I'm suggesting. Would you have to make a rig? Yes. But what's a steady-cam, but a rig. ...So to be clear, I'm saying it was all done "in camera" with no greenscreening et. The trick was getting the cameraman to memorize the floorplan, and sticking him into a rig that houses the medicine cabinet. He'd have to be at an angle, so he doesn't show up in the mirror, but that angle also allows him to see in enough whats actually in front of this rig.

You can do this without any compositing what-so-ever on any camera. Just anchor the camera to the medicine cabinet and rip the medicine cabinet out of the wall and mount them together as one rig. Walk ahead of your subject filming in the same direction you're both walking and filming into the mirror. Never let the camera see the sides of the mirror (anchored, remember)...then when you get to the end of the shot, just stop the mirror in a designated location and pull the camera away from it. I did this with my cel-phone and several video cameras and it's identical to Contact, without an ounce of post-work...It just requires the MIRROR GO WITH THE CAMERA! The mirror does NOT have to be very heavy. The glass can be thin plastic and the rest can be cardboard. So having a fake mirror rigged to a lightweight camera is more than feasable.

I dont underdtand how that works. Like the camera is in the cabinet and behind the mirror? The camera would be blocking its own reflection if it was attatched to the mirror

@@PracticalEffectsGuy the 'no camera mirror' is a very old and famous photography trick and uses a tilt-shift lens. basicaly it is: place the camera just out of the mirror reflection, place the subject in such a fashion it is framed by the mirror and correct the perspective. it can be done in post by correcting the perspective of the mirror too but will end with some focus artifacts (slanted focal plane) and is 'less techincal'. check this for a more visual example www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/What-Is-a-Tilt-Shift-Lens.aspx

@@rafaelthetall That´s unbelievable !! i never had the chance to work with a tilt shift lense.. but clearly that blows my mind. Thank you very much for this comment! I will look deeper into that since i can´t fully understand how and why that works until i tried it myself xD

@@PracticalEffectsGuy you can 'emulate' this very well in after. get a dlsr with a good travel lens (like a 18-200 or 27-300) so you have enough zoom to frame the approach in tele and frame the mirror in wide. take in account you will have to cut some to compensate for the perspective correction so make the wide very wide . in after adjust the perspective so the mirror looks 'square'. one thing: the aproach path will not be perpendicular to the mirror but a bit skewed. done
