Yu-Gi-Oh! Gaming Custom Cards #2: Sonic the Hedgehog

Ойындар

In the early days of the 16-bit console era, a new gaming mascot rose to challenge Mario, the jumping, stomping, plumbing titan that laid the foundation for gaming as we know it. He's blue, he's fast, and he's a hedgehog with attitude. Compared to Mario, Sonic's sleek design and speedy gameplay made him stand out as being the "coolest" among gamers in the 90s. The Mobius Genesis archetype faithfully encapsulates the qualities of speed and attitude that the Sonic series is still known for, to this day.
All three Mobius Genesis monsters have the ability to attack a monster during the opponent's Main Phase. They also have seven Spells/Traps that directly support them, while also counting as individual Chaos Emeralds while they're banished. This archetype is extremely compatible with Macro Decks and other banishing strategies, and banishing all seven of these Spells/Traps unlocks the Mobius Genesis' Super Forms.

With the way the spells work being able to be activated in the hand, I can see this strategy working pretty well with Runick. Ironic considering it can skip your battle phase and requires you to play slow and steady, but you don’t need a battle phase if you can just attack during the main phase!

Good combo! I should specify that the Mobius Genesis monsters can quick attack during the opponent's Main Phase, not the player's Main phase.

Super Forms seem kinda underwhelming as just good to mediocre beatsticks with effect protection, given how *godly* powerful they are in the games (and *especially* in the comics). Especially if these are supposed to be the *SUPER* Emeralds, which would technically make these HYPER forms, which are a good step above. Personally, I'd take single, high-tier boss monsters for each Super Form over a pretty good passive buff encapsulating the idea, but maybe some more cards down the line will help with that? Either way, this is some seriously good work, dude! Love the 90's naming conventions, and the really creative archetype gimmicks! Glad I found your channel; it's always nice to see someone actually realizing an idea you'd always had, but never had the time or courage to actually go through with. Looking forward to more!

Thanks! I should point out that they're not 'really' Super Emeralds, so much as a single card that represents the accumulation of the Chaos Emeralds as a whole. I know they're supposed to grant Sonic and co (and by extension, the player) unlimited power in the lore, but in-game, even the Hyper Forms are still vulnerable to getting crushed and falling into bottomless pits. That said, if the player loses a life, they don't suddenly lose all their Emeralds - they just have to gather up enough rings again, which takes a fraction of the time and effort. It's basically the same concept with the card adaptations - having a Super Mobian taken off the board doesn't put you back that far, whereas other Decks simply can't recover if their board of omni-negates gets undone by Super Polymerization or a Lava Golem. Does that make sense?

@@gmaster1991 I mean, if the only goal is to replicate the game functionality, then sure, I can get the logic. But narratively speaking, the Chaos Emeralds are more than just a cool unlock; they're the win condition. Heck, a decent chunk of the games that Super Forms appear in have them as an endgame exclusive, only to be busted out when all hope seems lost, rather than a reward to use anytime you want. This representation is - beyond clever in its implementation, don't get me wrong - but also wholly underwhelming. If I could be so bold as to suggest: maybe play around with the (admittedly kind of stupid) retcon that only a select few characters have proper "Super" forms, and design actual, dedicated boss monsters for Sonic, Silver, Shadow, and Blaze's Super Forms (as far down the road as that needs to be) that can can only be busted out once the Banished Chaos Emerald requirements have been met, benefitting from the Emeralds' power, on top of bringing their own effects to the table? Heck, going one step further, you could even design more cards with the "become a Chaos Emerald when Banished" clause, and have a super hard to reach win condition of reaching *14* Banished Chaos Emeralds to bust out Hyper Sonic (to emulate how the Super Emeralds were created in S3&K). As it stands with this base set, Knuckles is the #1 reason to assemble the Emeralds, with Sonic only being *kind of* good, and that feels... *wrong.* If Sonic doesn't get a unique buff from the Emeralds to make him the best, then having his own dedicated "Super Form" card to bring out definitely feels like the right way to go.

@@XshadOtakuXHmm... I can see some of your points. 14 banished Emeralds is way too much, consider that they'd all have to have different original names. If I made Extra Deck boss monsters for them, then the Pots of Extravagance and/or Prosperity becomes riskier, especially in an archetype that absolutely needs as much consistency as possible. Perhaps a single Super Sonic Extra Deck monster could work by Tributing a Sonic you control while the Emeralds are all banished...

@r1991 Yeah, lol, I wasn't expecting you to go for the 14 Emerald idea. Or any of them, really. I'm more just blabbing what ideas come to mind, more than legitimately pitching them. ^_^; Thanks for taking the time to respond, though; it means a lot. The Pots' risk to the Extra Deck is something I didn't consider, tho, but nothing a quick buff to the in-archetype draw engine or methods of recycling banished monsters can't fix. Like, using Pots to banish Super Sonic could actually be viable, if there were another card that could return (whatever card type Super Sonic would be; I'm thinking Link, probably?) back to the the Extra Deck and draw even more cards from it? Heck, maybe Super Sonic could actually return *himself* to the Extra Deck, somehow, so there's no risk to using Pots, at all? Of course, there's also the route of making Super Sonic a *Main Deck* Boss Monster with the same Summoning requirements, but... well, that's kind of the opposite of helping with consistency, I guess. Another thought I had was maybe Super Sonic actually returns "Chaos Emeralds" to the deck as long as he's on the field, and bounces himself once they're all gone. Kind of to replicate how the form constantly drains Sonic's rings in-game, and how you actually have to work to maintain him, or work to get him back if you lose him. Again, just blabbing, tho.

That was intentional. The Mobius Genesis monsters are meant to be replenished quickly - it's why Altar of the Master Emerald's "while banished" effect works the way it does. That way, you can just Normal Summon another copy of a Mobius Genesis monster, if need be, and it'll still get the doubled ATK and destruction protection. The lack of emphasis on an Extra Deck also incentivizes Pots of Extravagance and/or Prosperity for an archetype that desperately needs as much consistency as possible to be effective.

The Master Emerald only cancels the Chaos Emeralds when it's specifically used to do so. It can be also used in the same way as all seven Chaos Emeralds combined. Also, only Tails needed the Super Emeralds to go Super. Knuckles had a Super Form in the original Genesis version of Sonic & Knuckles, as well as both Super *and* Hyper forms in the original Genesis version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I honestly think that there should be a restriction to not allow Sonic and co. to attack on your Opponent's first turn, because being able to attack when your opponent hasn't even made a move yet is a bit unfair. I would've suggested to instead allow them to attack during their Battle Phase, but since the Battle Phase can be skipped, that wouldn't work for what this archetype is going for.

  • @gmaster1991

The potential to attack during your opponent's first turn and interrupt their strategy is their raison dêtre. That's what makes it such a good go-second Deck. Even so, each Mobius Genesis monster's Quick Attack is once per turn, and the strongest one's ATK is 1800, which doesn't touch certain archetypes like Kashtira. Indestructible monsters or monster negation can also cut a potential interruption short. Finally, Escapin' From the City is the only card that can actually get a Mobius Genesis monster on the board in an opponent's Turn 1, and it can be shut down by Ash Blossom.

@@gmaster1991 By "opponent's first turn", I meant the first turn your opponent takes, not the first turn of the Duel. @@gmaster1991 Okay, let me try to explain where I was coming from. When I posted my original comment, I, for some reason, thought that because the card text specified "During your opponent's Main Phase", it meant that you could activate the effect any time during that phase, even at the start of it. This left me concerned that, if you took the first turn, you could potentially Summon a bunch of Mobius Genesis monsters and have them all attack your opponent before they got a card on the field, which if you managed to get out three Knuckleses and two Sonics, would likely end the game then and there. Or in the case of a Speed Duel, just one Knuckles and two other non-Tails Mobius Genesis monsters would be enough. But as I was trying to type up this reply, I decided to dig deeper into it, and it turns out that's actually not the case. The turn player always has priority, meaning the opponent can't activate anything until the turn player does something that can be responded to or the card being activated has some hyperspecific timing like "at the start/end of *insert phase here*". So they would still be able to Summon a monster to try to stop the incoming onslaught before it actually happens. I understood this ruling to some extent, but clearly I still had some misinterpretation of the game's rules because of my earlier assumption.
