YouTuber & singer Gabbie Hanna speaks about internet fame, meme culture & authenticity online

Gabbie Hanna answers questions from the Oxford Union audience
Ms Hanna has released two studio albums and written both plays and books. She took a break from social media in 2022 after she posted over 100 TikTok videos in one day - which she later attributed to a manic episode brought on by bipolar.

ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

@@LHS427 since you seem to be enjoying lecturing everyone here and kissing a talentless unintelligent influencer’s bum, let me educate you about the fact that narcissism is not a diagnosis, it is a trait that lies on a spectrum. For example people like you and Gabbie lie far ahead on the spectrum judging by how you talk a lot on topics which you have no credentials or nuance for while Jesus or Buddha might be on the lower end of the spectrum. NPD on the other hand is a disorder which I am pretty sure she does have too lolol. Get a life

So you basically saying you want a debate group to only bring people YOU agree with or that you like? Just wondering, you do know that the very premise behind debating is having access to as many points of view as possible, including the ones you dont necessarily like/agree with, right?

Seeing defenders of Gabbie’s actions attacking people for having an opinion based on her online history is just becoming terrifying at this point. Do you think acting like her is going to get you far? I used to defend her myself when it was about a MH crisis, but she literally grifted religion and hasn’t apologized for attacking others *personally* over little to nothing, especially Jessie Smiles; Gabbie tried to manipulate that situation so hard. She has no remorse, and is virtue signalling through Christ. I’ve never been a part of a more toxic fan base than hers, I urge you frequent commenters to consider all of the facts and realize who you’re supporting, especially fellow Christians.

I'm not saying that Gabbie is an all time low for the Oxford Union to have speaking, when they've had such people as Katie Hopkins and Tommy Robinson speaking. I don't think she's on their level of abhorrence yet. The one thing that she fails to do is to do self-reflection and atone for her actions, she'll blame them on other people instead of looking at who the root cause is, most of the time, it's her. I genuinely wish she was able to mature and make amends with the people she's hurt, but I can't see that ever happening in a month of Sundays. With her poetry, and the same goes for everyone else who chooses to sell their artwork or literature, it is open for criticism of all kinds.
