i did. it. tell me wut you think 😂 “Sleep” i like sleep. sleep is neat. i like the colorful dreams dreams of what could never be i like the emptiness, the softness and who i am, the me of an untrue reality i like the role play, the pretending that all the bad things are gonna end and all the broken promises are mending of all the apologies they’re sending i like the chaos, the break away from our modern day of 9-5, the never ending grind the exhausting repetition of this life i like the nothingness, the void i love how i can hurt, but there’s no pain i love how there’s nothing to be gained from a lie i love how you try and try and try and never get anywhere i love how nothing matters how no one cares in the void no stares in the void no one even glances your way i like how your shoulder relax and your back cracks and you sigh, a deep long sigh a clear mind nothing to grasp for, no reason to try i like sleep i love the vast, peaceful, the empty, chaotic make believe. but mostly, i like how you never have to compete there’s no one in this world the world of dream this world of sleep there’s no one but me just me just me and my make believes

Yes -- Shel Silverstein wrote MUCH better poetry than this, as do Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear and others. There are some excellent poets whose work is directed to children. In contrast, I can't helping thinking that the Hanna poem about sleep is of similar awfulness (as far as structure, rhyme, meter, etc., _not_ content) to some of the "verses" in Ken Ham's kids' books. (Which Rachel has done videos about too, of course.)

Gabbie made a video about defending her poetry and it really got me mad. She just told everyone who criticized it as “not looking deep enough into it.” No, people looked into it, Gabbie just didn’t leave anything for people to look into. She needs to learn that intention doesn’t matter, it’s what the reader gets from the poem. You shouldn’t have to defend it.

Look I LOVE poetry and all forms of art. I love vague poems because it interests and makes the reader more eager to find out of the actual meaning of the poem. But Gabbie’s “poetry” is just SO basic and simple with childish rhymes and vocabulary that its just plain, basic, bad, and childish. I mean Shel Silverstein’s poems are really good, but its just not for Gabbie. If she has to explain these basic af “poems” then she’s just a lost cause I’m sorry she should stick to one thing at a time like her music poetry is just not for her.

I always recall a veritasium video from way back, calling out non-bot clickfarms on facebook... maybe youtube has grown to such size that those things start appearing? The problem frequently points towards asian countries where those clickfarms are based, which would be underpaying people to "like" all sorts of random shit they encounter. I feel even a bit racist saying this, "the new people are a problem", and im so sorry if i do, but im trying to announce an engrained problem with social media... and we dont really have laws regulating it.

She's always talking about how deep her music is and there's so many underlying messages but her lyrics are all straight to the point and obvious, any meaning she does try to add seems so forced. I think this is a big reason why she chose to do a poetry book. Poetry's main point is to carry a message through your words and she chose to write poetry to seem deep. Her poems in reality aren't crafted to have a deep underlying meaning that you wouldn't realize until you've reread it tons of times, it's very straight to the point like you had said.

Actually that is a lot more appealing than anything she wrote - it’s simple yet funny, even removed from the mocking of Gabbie, it can be interpreted as a mockery of a certain subsection of society. Essentially you’ve managed to create two layers in three sentences which is a lot more than Gabbie ever did

  • @TotosTales

    @TotosTales

    4 жыл бұрын

Genuinely if you flip the first two lines you even get a proper rhythm. “Dogs Bark Trees have bark I am one with nature” Also as the person above pointed out it is reminiscent of a playground rhyme, which combined with its simplicity, if it is taken as a criticism of a subculture if society would imply that that subculture isn’t very smart and relies on 8th grade intellectualism. So layer one: a funny short poem of someone say in the park Layer two: a comment on egocentric subculture being simple, vapid and self important Layer three: One could argue that you are saying that to enjoy nature one must too regress to a simplistic childlike state, although I am not sure I could write a super convincing argument on that... I’m sorry, I just really enjoyed those three lines, they’re genuinely quite good imo. Yes I realize this is ridiculous

Her poem “sticks” was actually quite nice until the last four lines. Completely ruined it and made it angsty self hatred, which is a common thing she likes to shove in literally anything she writes. There’s lots of problems with her writing, but specifically the angsty, edgy extreme grasp at attention that’s plaguing her work is seriously dragging her down. Mental illness is not a trend, and the attempt she’s making at making a statement to relate to youth is.. sad. It’s an obvious lack of connection to society due to her other problematic behaviors, and maybe someday when she works at her issues she may find writing to be more kind to her.

I completely agree. Literally every single Gabbie piece in this video was just absolutely drenched in edge and self-hatred and angst. It’s so overwhelming and wayy over done, and although I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having an angsty poem, hers just are not even a little bit subtle or elegant. Her writing sounds like an edgy teen dumping their feelings on tumblr, not an adult trying to tell a dark story through art. And there’s just nothing considerate about any of them, especially that last one about cutting hair. She’s so aggressive about the depression theme and it just makes it all sound like a joke. It’s very frustrating to read, I think especially as someone who has been surrounded by these very serious issues their whole life.

We could speculate here all day long why they act like that and still fail to see what’s the underlying reason. I, for one, experienced being called an attention seeker because I had cuts on my wrists back then (I stopped doing them though). They laughed at me when they get a glimpse of it. Not trying to guilt trip any of you, point of why I said this is because there might really be a good reason why people do stuff and assuming something that drags them down is just sad...

You can also still be a fan of someone even if they do something you don’t like or don’t think they did very well on.

I'm so very late, but I feel like poetry is using the subtle quirks of human language to communicate human experience. It can be plain language, of course, but there's a difference between "I love you" and "stars are born inside my chest every time i speak your name". This just doesn't read (to me) that it's trying to communicate anything deeper, it feels like tweets that happen to rhyme. And that's what really disappointed me.

Gabbie clearly hasn't watched this video. I went in expecting a fun video where I would laugh at the stupid things in that book and came out with a renewed interest in poetry and all of its nuances. You were weren't rude, weren't even blunt, you were very constructive and educated. Clearly Gabbie has only seen the title of this video, which is so brash because, well, clickbait. Its kind of necessary to reel people in. But you get way more than you're actually expecting.

Wow, I didn’t realize how bad her poetry was until now lol as someone who also struggles with self harm, the “cut” poem does feel very insensitive and demeaning in a way, but something that I find interesting is that Gabbie has talked about it being very hard for her to cut her hair, since she’s used it almost as a security blanket her whole life or as a thing to hide behind. So perhaps she’s trying to draw a parallel between the pain of cutting her hair and the trauma of self harm? Which i think is uhhh,,, sorta yikess

  • @satanatural9089

TheRenFiles Yo, as the one who cut myself in past AND cut hair, it’s not that painful? I do value my hair a lot, it’s very fluffy and curls more and more each day, but when I cut my braids, the only pain I felt is a pain from hair piercing my eyes. She’s just overdramatizes everything she sees.

I hated that poem so much, even when I enjoyed Gabbie Hanna. I stopped reading the book only a day after getting it because it made me feel...gross. She makes it seem like she's talking about the struggle of self-harm...then switches it to her hair? Like Gabbie, I use my hair as a security blanket, but I wouldn't act like I'm hurting myself or taking my life because I'm cutting it...that's fucked up

Your thoughts and feelings are valid, she’s a public figure and can have content made about her- yes, even criticizing and making jokes. She does this all the time every few months to a stir the pot to smaller content creators, don’t let her bully you. She wants to be everything- singer- you tuber- poetry writer- neurodivergent (?) - abused- rocker- sings ballads- has all the hot word diagnoses- has been through everything traumatic- EVERYTHING. Gabbie has or does everything according to her... Gabbie has to realize everyone won’t like her, or all her content, and that everything isn’t for everyone.

Rachel, I found your channel last year, and as a beginner writer, I found your commentary so entertaining and insightful. You're actually the person who inspired me to get into the art form and start writing my own poems. I had this sort of dull interest in poetry, but after you made me kinda see the beauty in the craft, what goes into it, and what makes poetry poetry, I had developed this deep love for it. Poetry has become a big part of my life and identity and I can't imagine it any other way. This unfound criticism towards you hurts, because I absolutely adore your channel. You do so much and offer so much knowledge and it definitely isn't un-appreciated by many

I rewrote gabbie's sleep poem if it actually we're about depression like you had suggested. It's still not perfect but perhaps a better/more meaningful alternative to just liking sleep: I like sleep. Sleep is neat. Sleep means everything to me. I like sleep. Sleep is sweet. Sweeter than what life could bring When I sleep, I can dream Of what I'm truly meant to be Instead I'm here, where I can't think Instead my mind is on the brink That's why I love my 12 hour blink And wish it were eternity.

It would have been so easy to react in anger to all the horrible things she said but instead you tried to handle things privately over DM and encourage her to take a break to calm down. I just wanted to say that I was really impressed by how maturely you handled everything and that I really respect these videos as well - because they are just valid constructive criticism of her work and actually made me get into poetry. I hope you are doing okay after all the things Gabbie and her fans have been saying and wish you all the best!
