    I don't live in an area with locals and have never been to one, but this feels like a "I went to a public event and didn't understand how everything worked and got weirdly mad because I am not an adult yet" kinda situation. Smash!

    It was an event for SSBU, tournaments for the newest Smash games probably always have the youngest players in the FGC. Is there another fighting game that is aimed at kids as much as Smash? SSBM skews older and has more mature players.

    @@protocetid I mean as a melee player smashers are weird, but being stinky is much less reprehensible than the degenerate shit that turned the memes from "smash player smelly" to what it is now. I assumed from your comment that you were an SSBM player having to be a smash apologist because of all the controversy but it's cool to see someone on the outside trying to get a deeper perspective. I can't say melee is superior but there would be no Smash community if not for the feverishness of the melee community and it honestly feels good to see someone recognize the maturity of the community, and the fact that it's really newer smashers skewing the cultural FGC zeitgeist for all smashers.

    HECK YEAH, brother. I’m bringing my own HDMI cable because this one has the exact right amount of video signal degradation that I’m used to at home, I’m bringing a sports psychology performance coach to help me maintain my mental composure, and I’m even bringing the extra controller that I want my opponents to use. One of the buttons gets stuck down sometimes but it works fine, mostly.

    I just ran our first local tournament after weeks of cultivating a young new local FGC in a small town. We did an 11 person Soul Calibur 6 tournament and had a ton of fun. Some people had been practicing for a few weeks, some just started today, and we got some good matches. I tried to be encouraging to everyone so no one felt disappointed at a loss. We streamed it so there's a VOD they can look back on to see how they did, and I'm available to help coach. Gonna do a different game every month.

    Another aspect of this topic is the idea of "needing" headphones. You touched on it a little bit when you said you're lucky to have any audio at all. In my opinion, the ability to perform under pressure, with distractions is part of the spirit of competition. I've beaten players in bracket who are "better" than me because I maintained my mental composure better than they did, and it's another skill that comes into play. I find that to be an interesting and valid factor in competitions.

I can't see something like that being a problem, especially for a videogame-related meetup. I've made friends with plenty of awkward individuals at various conventions and other such events. A weird thing I’ve noticed with a lot of smash players is that a lot of them really want their game to be seen as a legitimate part of the FGC, yet at the same time they don’t treat their own game or community like a standard FGC game does When I look at this, it’s almost like this guy is trying to force a standard that he thinks exists with fighting game events at his small time local. A standard that really just doesn’t exist at all. It’s like they want all the notoriety and respect that being part of the FGC garners while at the same time not understanding what any of it means

    I went to a convention and thought it would be fun to enter a MVC2 tournament, since nobody really knew how to play and everyone was using dreambird controllers. Some dude rocked up with a full fight stick with a dreamcast adaptor, and we knew we were cooked. Met him at quarter finals and when I hit him at round start he went over and told me that it was a button check, despite no one else at the event doing button checks. Ok fair enough, restart the round. Proceeds to absolutely obliterate me. I guess he just plays by the rules, that's fine I guess. I go to character select for the next match, before realising that the controller isn't plugged in on main stage because Mr joystick didn't bother to plug it back in. Truly a menace. He then knocks his next opponent into losers bracket in the most disgusting way possible. The other player fat fingers a pause, while they are 0-2 down near round start. mr fight stick sets down his controller down and refuses to play the rest of the set, calling over the TO. There was no reason to do this, he was already putting this man in the blender with the sweatiest comp imaginable. That man who got knocked to losers absolutely destroyed the 3rd place guy, not out of spite, he just had somewhere he needed to be. We were all cheering for him, the other guy was an asshole. Then Mr Joystick unleashed his full power. It was a massacre. It was hard to watch. The dreambird controller was too weak, the stick drift too large to overcome. He actually played the game semi competitively, but there was no getting over the dreambird curse. They were running budokai after that, but my day was ruined. I just did not feel like playing after seeing that man. This is definitive proof that god is not real, he would not have let this happen if he was.

He was prepared...to play with monitor audio, or even with no audio at all. That's the preparation. It's a tournament, not playing in your living room. If someone can't handle playing without headphones because of ambient noise, then maybe it's not for them. Guy refuses to play and then he's trying to act like there's some conspiracy afoot? Like, I bring my own external speaker that’s loud enough for both players on the setup, so that we can both have audio. And this dude would straight up unplug my speaker so that only he can get audio for himself, and legit get confused/upset when we’d be like “Why not allow others to have audio as well, since there’s a loud enough speaker already plugged in for both players?” Sooner or later, these sorts of peeps are gonna eventually have to attend a big event, and are going to be forced to either play fairly, or get destroyed by basic logic and having to deal with the reality that not everyone is gonna just bow down to someone’s unfair demands. 😂

    For those who still don’t get why OP is in the wrong. Your brain can process audio cues faster than visual cues, which can aid in reacting. So having sound is obviously preferable to having no sound. If both players have no sound, it is what is. But if one player has sound, that player has the advantage. OP basically stole the game audio and said “I can’t concentrate with background noise going on, but I’m forcing you to” to their opponent. Very self-centred behaviour.

  • @Starmar

    @Starmar

    I feel like everyone is glossing over the fact that OP always brings a splitter to accommodate his opponent. (Probably because Jiyuna misread it in the video) This doesn't completely put headphones guy in the right in my opinion, but it does shift the narrative a bit from him being some unaware weirdo who doesn't understand why he has an advantage. To a certain degree I do understand his argument of "if they cared that much about sound to where they'd refuse to play the set, you should have brought your own headphones and used my splitter" but at the end of the day he should have played the set on even terms and accepted it when the TO asked him to.

We had a main bracket and anyone that went 0-2 or drowned in pools could enter an amateur bracket for free. It went for a while and one day we had the idea to do a milestone tournament. Me and the other TOs had put in a 500 dollar pot bonus. Day of the tourney we had a relatively large turnout...only for the power to go out at the venue. We ended up just hanging out the entire day because the power didn't return until super late lol. Locals aren't serious man. Just enjoy yourself and the company of people with which you share some common ground.

    I cannot stress enough how much of themselves TOs and people who run locals put into their events. It's more often than not a thankless endeavor, like a child who never hugs you. Time, effort, and - in more cases they you'd think - money are put in for the sole purpose of keeping certain games alive in the area. No return expected beyond the satisfaction that something that was worth doing was done. I'm fortunate to have pretty much never encountered someone as ungrateful and selfish in any of the communities and events I ran. But, you can bet that someone like this would never be welcome again. It's one thing to have a chat with the TO in private to clear up the air and another to put them on blast on social media.

    Issue is the monitor they were going to play that match on had audio. It'd be one thing if there'd be no audio to begin with and then he had headphones. Fine, sure, whatever. But the monitor had audio, and then he wanted to use his headphones and deprive his opponent of it. Nah.

    I feel like this just showcases an inexperienced player. I remember when I first started going to my locals and competing in brackets I came in with a similar competitive perspective. I was surprised to see my locals didn't have things like audio splitters and the like that would allow us to play in ideal conditions. But I quickly realized that I had just hyped up the level of competitiveness in my head and it was a much more collaborative experience and environment. Also, a huge benefit I have come to take out of the variety of levels of professionalism of different community run events is is teaches you to roll with the punches and be able to perform across a variety of settings. This helps strengthen an FG players resilience to mental stack in my opinion! Builds focus! Makes better players! And we can have fun while doing it, no downside IMO.

    I get the idea of wanting the best possible chance to win. I also get the attitude of taking every tournament seriously even if it is just an 11 man weekly tournament. But it crossed the line when he felt it was appropriate to as a player modify the tournament setups. And then on top of that of that made it his opponents problem to produce headphones or be without audio. When we are having this issue in the first place because of him. Like if I sucked it up playing without audio on the other setups. And then when I finally get a good setup I have someone pull this nonsense on me. I've dealt with some weird people at various locals and events (most which I like). But he would have had to catch me in a charitable mood to solve this shit for him. I'm sure if he went about it in a different way they could've easily produced another pair of headphones, everyone would be smiling an he would have had the match in the way he wanted to have it. If he feels strongly about how the tournaments should have their setups he should become active within their community and implement the change he wants to see for the next tournament. Blasting your locals on twitter is not the way to do it. Then him complaining about the TO being friends with the other guy just sent me lol. I'd hope people who regularly go to locals becomes friends with each other. I'm sure he could have made that claim that the TO was friends with every other participant in that tournament except him. If he gets his stick out of his ass he would for sure make some friends too. It takes a lot of active effort to not make friends at a local.

The comments about the TO were uncalled for but otherwise I get why they're upset.

    Obama would cook em lmao. I have never been to a local per se. I live in Michigan and went to Youmacon once with some friends. Unfortunately, I got there too late to meet Cristina Vee. I know there’s a lot of Noel haters, but I love the character so that would’ve been perfect. Anyways, they had a gaming area with Tekken 7 cabinets, SFV, 3rd Strike, some gundam game, an actual tournament going on in the center of the room, GG Xrd and BBCF and other games on consoles. They also had a tabletop section and also more choices that weren’t fighting games. I would’ve liked to “compete” lol but I was there with friends so it was still nice to play fighting games with other people on cabinets and just have fun. Anyways, it was dope, and I wish I would’ve attended more things like that. But just like with everything else not everybody has a good attitude. I agree with your take on the video for sure. Sorry, there’s never a TLDR version with me. Edit: Also, the closest thing I got to your final question is that same experience. I met an online friend for the first time and she was playing GG. Anyways, she kept waking up with throw with Jack-O and her opponent kept taking it. He legit got mad and started flaming. So my buddy was clapping and cheering in the background, “That’s my girl!” LMFAOOO
