Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks -- the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.

He was forcing himself to smile because that’s what people wanted. (His psychiatrist, his co-workers, everyone). He was misunderstood and mistreated because he wasn’t smiling (happy). At the end, he was finally happy because he no longer cared what made others happy, he started to care about only what made him happy, so he no longer had to force the smile.

It took several bad days to make this Joker snap. Beaten up on the job, losing his job, getting assaulted on a train which lead to a self defense/execution, getting rejected by his supposed "father", discovering his mother was never truly his mother while also being responsible for his mental scars and conditions, and then discovering his love interest was never his due to delusions. Imagine actually cramming *all that* into one day.

To me, this ending is what makes it a perfect Joker movie. What does Joker always do? Give a multiple choice past, especially to therapists. Usually in the form of a sob story to garner sympathy. What if all of what we just saw, the Waynes, the Murray Franklin show, all of it, was just another one of those? What if it’s actually what happened and no one believes him because… it’s the Joker? And he’s laughing because he’s a sick, sadistic, evil monster… and he just made you feel bad for him. The jokes on all of us.

This scene is years later after the events of the film (note how they stopped covering Joaquin's grey hairs to let him look older), and the "joke" he was thinking of was the *entire movie* up to that point. The punchline? That he and his archrival have the same birthday. The day he broke and became The Joker, was the day Bruce Wayne was broken too.

I feel this is a callback to Arthur's previous psychiatrist and how she didn't really care about how Joker truly felt. Joker knew that this second psychiatrist would be no different, which is why he completely disregarded her request to know what he was laughing about. No matter what he'd tell her, she wouldn't get it.

Marvel has Deadpool which is the biggest anti-hero known in comics. The Joker is only a good villain if Batman is involved in some capacity otherwise a story without Batman with the Joker is meaningless. Even this movie had to have Bruce Wayne in it to prove that point. While I am a DC Comics fan I will not ignore the success of the MCU which are more popcorn flicks and two or three thought-provoking films that can be half as interesting as a DC film. Also the MCU never had a film bomb as hard as Batman and Robin. I don't understand why we have to always compete, but if people are going to compete they might as well look at the sales proving themselves. Joker is an underrated achievement, but can it continue to follow up more money like the MCU has with their movies.
