Heath Ledger. The guy nobody thought could play the Joker, not only nailed the role and gave the best performance of his career, but he also made Batman a side character in his own movie.

the last scene where he said that madness just need a little push, was diabolic, because he described in his role, that a lot of people are always in the edge, without knowing the line is an illusion to maintain order, and that the trully powerfull people have no lines or morals, so they always win and get away with it, they have no competitors because they can do the unthinkable, the things decent people wont do.

Oh to me it felt more like he feels a little triggered. The only moment in the movie where a remark touches the troubled human below, who wants to feel included. To label someone "crazy" is to exclude him from the norm, and I reckon the Joker feels that exclusion to this day. So he lowers his head, quiets down when he objects, and emphasizes the final "t" to rebel against his labelers.

That's not true at all. In the script it says: INT. DENT'S HOSPITAL ROOM -- CONTINUOUS Polk enters the room. No Davis. Just a REDHEADED NURSE, back towards him, reading Dent's chart. POLK Ma'am, we're going to have to move him, now. (nothing) Ma'am? The Redhead TURNS- it is the Joker, silenced pistol in hand. He FIRES. The whole point of the nurse costume was to easily infiltrate the hospital. The whole police department was looking for the Joker, and that hospital had priority.

@@nate-hl9sq This one is also untrue. Yes he was looking for Dent, but he would settle for "his loved ones" and Rachel stepped in to defend another man. THE JOKER You know, you remind me of my father. (GRABS him) I hated my father. The Joker has his blade in the Gentleman's mouth. RACHEL Stop! The Joker drops the Gentleman. Turns to Rachel. THE JOKER Hello, beautiful. You must be Harvey's squeeze. (runs his knife across her cheek) And you are beautiful. You look nervous- it's the scars isn't it? Wanna know how I got them? I had a wife, beautiful like you. ... It is true that Ledger didn't stick to the script, but the general idea of what he was supposed to say and do is still there.

@@302project This one is also false. Nolan himself said this in the behind the scenes featurette. They rehearsed it several times, Heath knew. There was no second chance, this stunt was the most expensive and most intricate of them all. Every twitch, every glance, step, carefully planned for it to work. Why does it look so convincing and natural? They were that good.

I mean, in his first scene - THE FIRST SCENE OF THE MOVIE - he demonstrates just how terrifying he is, because he clearly doesn't care about anything. Any one of those other guys could have decided to kill him before he killed them, the bank manager could have got a lucky shot, his whole plan could have ended before it began. Is he tense? Worried? Focused, even? No, none of those things, he's just going with the flow of events. He greets the world with a mockingly fake cheerfulness, while underneath he's utterly nihilistic. It's not just that the lives of others mean nothing to him, his own life means nothing. He has zero regard for whether he lives, dies, succeeds, or fails, which allows him to go all-in with no fear. This is why his gambit with Dent paid off, he didn't care if Dent blew his brains out, so he made things "fair" and convinced Dent to take on an entirely new view of the world. He doesn't even care if the two ferries rise above their fear of each other, he'll just blow them up anyway. He could do anything, at any time, to anyone. Nothing is sacred, nothing is safe. He does, indeed, just want to watch the world burn, and then he wants to climb onto the fire.

For example, do you remember the name Schwarzenegger's character in Running Man? Neither do I but I clearly remember his opponents Dynmo, Buzzsaw and Subzero. I don't know about ever, but he undoubtedly played the best villain in any superhero movie (Marvel and DC). However, you have other cases like Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector and Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump that are certainly up there. I also think Anthony Starr is close to Heath's level when he plays Homelander in the Boys

@@NoName-ds8yz That's kind of like asking who's the better athlete Michael Jordan or Ali? Different acting techniques are involved in playing a deranged villain (the specialty of certain actors like Gary Oldman) or nuanced performances of, say, Daniel Day-Lewis. Proposing that Ledger's performance is (even arguably) better than Brando's in Godfather or Day-Lewis's in There Will Be Blood, or Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs is one of those silly exaggerations that people like to post in the comment section. The reason why we like Ledger so much is because his performance was so much better than all the other performances in the movie - it's as if every time he's on the screen it's a different movie. Not that Bale and Oldman are bad actors - it's just that they didn't have much to work with, while Ledger was given a carte blanche to do with the role whatever he wanted. Plus, people are more likely to appreciate over-the-top performances (which work well in the comic book genre, so that's not a criticism) than those that require more nuance.

2:25 when Gambol says "you're crazy", it's the only time during the movie where you can see Joker is genuinely upset. He truly believes that being an agent of chaos is the only way to live, and is downright offended at someone insulting him about his state of mind. Aside from the bounty Gambol placed, this is the reason why Joker "kills" him personally later on. It's subtle, but I really wish that they explored on this more.
