@craig3773 the cable being visible was deliberate. How else could he fall that slowly? His cape, in the movie, didn’t allow him to glide. Without the cable he’d have to hit the ground hard and roll; he couldn’t see what was below him what with the glass being opaque.

at the time jack was demanding 10 million per movie, however he took a lower overall fee of 6 million in exchange for a percentage of the movies profits and a portion of the merchandise sales. movie made 411 million at the box office (in 1989 dollars, about 847 million in 2020 money) he ended up grossing between 50 and 60 million.

Jalen Johnson that’s why I think this joker portrayal (no insults to Ledger, Leto, Phoenix) is the best because it has actual comedic laughs and jokes that make the audience giggle/laugh, which all other on screen joker portrayals have missed. But he is still a deranged, cold blooded killer who cares about no one except himself. Plus when you consider the body count between murdering everyone in this museum, the poisoned cosmetics and the hundreds of people at the parade, he still to this day one of the, if not the, most deadly (body count) comic book villain movie adaptations.

The original can never be replaced. Nothing has come close to this jack is the joker

I am sorry but the original joker actor would be Cesar Julio Romero, Jr., the actor for the joker in the 1960s series.

"I am the world's first fully functioning homicidal artist." I was today years old when I realized that's what he said...and I've been watching this movie since the early 90s.

I love how joker's men are always smiling and actually look like they're enjoying working for the joker while other jokers have their henchmen work for him out of fear. And I love how joker has a guy who's one job is to follow him around with a boom box, if you pay attention he made more than one appearance.

Honestly I feel the same way about M Keatons Bruce Wayne. So much more nuance to the character. I love the Nolan movies but Bale’s Wayne is more like revisiting Patrick Bateman at his most sane moments. Keaton put a depth to the character I don’t think has been matched since. The whole movie is just spectacular.

They’ve become oh so serious violent ‘epics’, which inspired a mass shooting at a movie theatre, and the the actor who played Joker killed himself. I think it’s a reflection of our times, where we must take comic book heroes so seriously, probably because Hollywood has run out of creative ideas. Tim Burton is one of America’s great creative directors, and Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Kim Bassinger play their roles so perfectly. Tim Burton’s Batmans are gothic, charming, funny, goofy, terrifying, creative, beautifully shot, and perfectly cast. He was the perfect director for Batman

Danny Elfman knows how to capture the essence of the world. Especially for a world in Burton’s vision. He’s done so well with helping out in films like “Edward Scissorhands” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

Nicholson did a phenomenal job as Joker.

If anybody is wondering the song in the background is "Partyman" by Prince. Hes an amazing artist

Jack Nicholson doesn't get enough credit for this role.

This is everything modern Batman movies lack….dark but comedic. Of course, hard to compete with Jack and Keaton now and days.

i know a lot of folks have their issues with burton's directing but this combo of Keaton/Nicholson and this flick worked ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUSLY. it is my favorite.

Art reflects the times. Artists often write in parallels to their worldview, and our world is not something that is shining vibrantly. The most recent Joker movie, touched heavily on a lot of current issues that are plaguing our society today. THere's no humor anymore, the only humor that remains is the irony that we find within our misery, and the complete absurdity of positions that we find ourselves wrapped up in as a species.

It is well known fact that Joker's entire dance sequence in this scene was totally improvised on the spot by Jack Nicholson.

Best Batman ever.

It's one of my favorite scenes because they all look like their having fun with it

I love the line, "I make art until someone dies".

I remember seeing this in the theater back in 89 when I was 7 and the audience going crazy when Batman crashed through the ceiling

What I love about this Joker and the actor is that they both have the same first name and a last name that starts with N

Somehow, I'm more disturbed when Joker has a "normal" face than his clown paint face. I think it's just his smile is literally attached to his face that makes it disturbing.

@mikesitzler1106 That's skin makeup he has on his face. His white makeup is permanently stuck on his face without being able to wash off. Vicky Vale washed the skin makeup off his face when she splashed the pitcher of water on his face.

Keaton's voice and mannerisms as Batman were just incredible.

Exactly why Jack will always be my fav Joker ... funny yet dangerous in the blink of an eye ....this is how Joker is and I love it ❤

"Do l look like im joking" is the best line in the film. Its both absolutely hilarious and terrifying at the same time. hahaha

Jack Nicholson as Joker is always my favorite, Ledger is literally his better half if that makes sense

Tim Burton’s Batmans will always be the best. The artistry, character development and darkness of Gotham are unbeatable in his films !

One of the best Jack Nicolson's roles,which deserved at leasr 1award,its oscar possible why not.Jack,s joker is more frantic,more mad than Ledger,s one and at the same time more fun,more humor.His phazes can be written in textbook and used in everyday life just to be wise and fun

I will never forget this movie! One of the best childhood memories I'll ever have.

Something I love about this joker is how the movie shows that he was already a maniac before he fell into a vat of acid, that aspect of him is what pushed him further over the edge, I always find this take on the character the most interesting while making him intimidate with his sense of gruesome humor, and the genuine threat he holds, much like heath ledger would do down the line

This is the only clip I've seen of Jack Nicholson's Joker and he's already my favorite. I need to watch this movie.

I've always loved the sound of the glass breaking.

That line at the end "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" has stood out to me since me and my wife saw this in the Northgate 1&2 Theater outside Northgate Mall in Chattanooga in 1989. Ive never forgotten it. I remember the movie not being what I thought it might be totally but it was awesome.

No joke. Batman 1989 is my favorite movie of all time. It was one of the first movies I ever saw and stuck with me since I was 4. It's just the right length, it's paced well, the action scenes are great and it leaves me feeling satisfied every time I see it. Not to mention Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker is my favorite and (in my opinion) the most faithful depiction of the character in film.

2:09 What I like about it is that him slapping the painting seems to oddly fit with Prince's singing.

The way the joker knocks off a statue at 1:30-1:32 kills me every time
