The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

Caruana isn't a large man to be fair. And didn't Alireza hit a growth spurt recently? When they were touring the play room, Hikaru walked in--not the tallest man either-- looked around, followed moments later by Alireza. When he walked in, head just beneath the door frame, he dwarfed everyone. lol

People talk about how the reason Fabi was a member of the 2800 club was because he was always very prepared. The fact that he beat Hikaru in that very tricky game, and Alireza in a game Alireza himself prepared shows you how much of a beast you have to be to get that far ahead in rating.

Interestingly though in both cases it was him just completely outplaying his opponent in the middle game. His game against Nepo was a nasty piece of prep (yeah Nepo was able to complicate and Fabi felt forced to bail but he was definitely the one with chances), but Fabi really has not gotten the crushing opening advantages he is known for.

Thanks for this, couldn't wait for your upload!
Feels like Alireza has been playing too aggressive, playing too many weird moves to try to confuse his opponents but they end up defending perfectly against him and put him in a bad position. To be fair, it's this aggression that the old players like Nepo is missing, which makes Magnus hesitant to want to face them again. But Alireza does not seem to have the skill to justify his aggression just yet.

@@JM-tj5qm not anymore. Carlsen, Nepo, Hikaru, karjakin, Fabiano, all of them reached peak at near 25. By 30 most of them fell quite a bit. Kasparov is from pre engine era. Chess changes faster today. Hundreds of engine line get analysed every year, and it's very hard to keep up for most players as they grow older. Most of the top 30 players are in 20-30 range which is a big evidence of this fact. At most early 30s. Late 30s we only have a couple of active players.

You forgot to update the description. Keep up the great work though, love the videos!
I think that Fabi is more consistent than Nepo. Nepo is psychologically les stable: either he wins 5 games in a row or he loses 5 games in a row badly. Fabi plays good games even when he loses. It will be an interesting second part.
Sekiro, Elden Ring and Firouzja vs Fabi..... keep the best games coming m8!!!! Love this channel
What a game -- with a legendary improvement here! And btw I might have attributed that quote above by mistake to Tal in a previous post. My apologies, but no is perfect and it was probably Tal -- most of all, anyway -- that Bobby was referring to. Thanks and what a tournament!
Firouzja’s exchange sac brings to mind a comment made by Kasparov when faced with an unexpected sac... if your opponent sacs but you have played soundly up until then, then (no matter how tricky the tactics) there must be a refutation in the position... your job is to find it. That’s exactly what Fabi did with the seemingly illogical f5! tallowing white to slip out of the skewer by offer a Queen trade, which rescues the rook no matter what Firouzja replies. Fabi’s counterattack is equally sublime. Bravo! Firouzja’s prep tho sharp seems to have holes in it; why else would he, a well-known speed demon, be burning thru so much time in his chosen opening???
I appreciate and fully agree with the idea, that photos shown in your videos should be at least a little bit weird. Otherwise they don't really add much. Well, but that's just my personal opinion ;)
I love that the photos are back!

Agadmator quoting "Elden Ring", doesn't get better than that guys! Pozdrav majstore! :D
Alireza had minutes on the clock when he sacked the rook for the bishop, looking for simplifications after bh3 winning the rook back as the black queen and rook are on the same diagonal. Problem is he missed f5. If bxf5 black plays qe8 and the queen on h5 is hanging so white has to play qxe8 but black just plays Rcxe8 and Alireza is just down the exchange with minutes on the clock…
I like the photos. Thank you.
Normally I don't keep up with the wins-losses so who wins is always a surprise to me. But for the candidate's tournament I do so it's strange watching a video where I know who wins.
All respect to Firouzja for trying all these cool ideas, but damn Fabi is looking strong this tournament. If Nepo slips up even slightly, Fabi is gonna take it all.

I was surprised by the apparent difference in size in the picture, and looked them both up - both are 5' 6" so it must be some trick of the camera angle or how they are sitting. Incidentally, they both became GM at 14 years of age - people tend to forget Caruana was a pridugy as well.

I agree, however I believe there ought not be any format change, but sudden death beyond the fixed games. If there's no result after a further six games, the title should be declared open, and both contestants entered into the next candidates tournament.
Just curious, I probably dont see IT; agadmator sais on 13:06, what to do for Ali? What if he would play knight to g6, doesn't he have mate in 2? Or can fabi checkmate?

Rf2+. If Kg4, you get mated. If Ke4, Qc2 will force a queen trade if you don't want to lose material
Fabi dragged him across the board 😬🔥
Qxa2 and Rxh2 from Fabi are mercilessly cold. Qe8 from Ali is desperation. There's a noticeable difference between the strengths of these two monsters.
As this is the position that Agadmator put in the thumbnail of the video, that's what we will play. -Agadmator, 2022
Fascinating, that Firouzja plays a rare move with white, and loses to an out of book Caruana. Fabiano continues to impress.
That pawn to f5 was just wow.
#suggestion Could you please show some games where Black is at the bottom and White is at the top. I think it will help us think better when we are playing with the Black pieces.
There’s something strangely intimidating about Fabi’s hunch and complete focus on the board
I’m liking these subtle elden ring captions
I'm on the photography part of the video and the "someone has artificially enlarged Aliareza" already won you my like. Now lets look at the game
Alireza can bounce back...will be interesting to see what happens then . He will learn a lot from this tournament and win in the future..
Fabiano is unbelievable
Is ding there in the tournament?
The photo reminded me of Morphy - Anderssen (1858). Small man beats the big man.
Please show the standing at the beginning/end of each video
You are da best analyzer of games, Agadmator.
I'm loving the Elden Ring quote titles
Great analysis as always. Re the photo, Caruana is just reet petite. No optical illusions here.
