The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

    7:17 So I am playing against Alireza in a rook and pawn endgame with 3 isolated pawns. Got it. I will resign, and ask for an autograph. If I am good enough to get into an endgame not down 20 points of material, I take that as a win. So yeah. Resign in 1 is a win in my book.

    Fabi rightly said that Ali's winning streak to 2800 previous year didn't show his true ability, but it was the momentum which every player gets at some point in his career. I was in that group of people who thought Alireza is the best player next to magnus, and would win the candidate to challenge him. But now I think, it is really not easy.

    The problem with all the hype about him is that it's really a disservice to his career. To compete at the highest level you need to 100% focus on your game, but the hype seems to get into his head and the recent dramas around him are unnecessary distractions. History of sport proves that nothing killed young talent more than media hype. Hope that he stays levelheaded through all the noise.

    I came in late to watch this game online almost right at the moment of the final PtV in this video. No spoilers, but if I hadn't seen the online analysis, I doubt very much whether I would have seen the winning move in any case. Endgames really need precision and players have often used all the "best clock thinking" in the middle game. Reaching time control at move 40 seems like a comfort, which it is, but endgames require a whole different (and harder) kind of "think" compared with other stages of the game. In my heavier playing days, I used to start feeling tired by the endgames having used my "fresher thinks" up early on. Even in crucial matches, keeping your focus is tough and often you could argue is another major factor that separates the best from the rest.

  • @earthwormsim8068

    Most definitely. I find it far more difficult to calculate the winning moves as pieces are removed from the board into and endgame. The depths of endgames are overwhelming

  • @gregorymorse8423

    @gregorymorse8423

    Mathematically speaking however you are wrong. The start of the game requires the deepest calculation - so deep that no engine can come close to solving chess. However, the patterns based on limited depth understanding have been memorized by players even before the current computer era, so practically speaking, yes the endgame is raw calculation for a human vs some patterns and intuition. If chess is ever solved, the perfect strategy rest assured will require more work at the start though. The longer a game goes on, the smaller the tree of possibilities.

    I believe the invention of engines have ruined the essence of the game. In theory you can study all possible outcomes and apply them in the game. Before engines it was all human effort to calculate and play accordingly. My humble opinion of course.
