The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

    Very fitting quote by Fischer. Firouzja keeps gambling. He plays positions that will have him winning if the opponent doesn't play the absolute best moves, but he's playing against the best players in the world, so they do find the best moves, and Alireza gambles away his games.

It's better to win than look like a genius.

    I think the Candidates blows away the WCC by a wide margin, this is my first time following it after following the last 2 WCC and all the different personalities and playing styles is so damn fun

  • @alpha007org

    @alpha007org

    Жыл бұрын

    I agree. WCC format is, in my humble opinion, not true to chess itself. It should be something like Candidates, but 10 best players including the champion, and after the tournament 1 week free time, and then 1st and 2nd hash it out. Last WCC, players behind that glass seemed so unnatural and strange.

  • @rhwing5095

    @rhwing5095

    Жыл бұрын

    @@alpha007org I agree that the tournament setup would be more fun/unpredictable, but by the same token, it would have a higher degree of randomness. It might be "fun" for the fans, but it doesn't help us to determine more accurately who is "best" and crown them champion. Even if we look at the current system, just the choice of candidate to challenge for the WC is not totally robust. A bit of luck or hot streak can make a big difference, and the tournament could be easily won by a tiebreak rule (based on a small number of sample games). For example, I could offer as an alternative that the highest Elo player would become the de-facto challenger for the WC in every cycle. Elo is very robust system in which it is difficult to "get lucky" or even cheat in any way, and it is based on the largest possible sample size. On the downside, it would amount to a chase of standings points similar to something like Formula 1 racing. Generally, I think we can all agree that the highest rated Elo player at any given moment is best by definition, and this has been historically true for as long as we have kept track of it. Only in the case of a "rising star" might you have a different situation, but in that scenario the rising star would reach the fair Elo in a matter of time anyway.

    @@rhwing5095 This is all true. Every system has it's downsides. I'm wondering if the "World Chess Champion" should even exist.

  • @dstreetz91

    @dstreetz91

    Жыл бұрын

    A champion should exist, to not have a champion is to undermine the sport when it's a 1v1 affair over the board. Having a tournament where a champion is crowned based on standings at the end does sound exciting in theory, but has a bit of a problem because one player can be really strong against another, but weak against another player among super GMs. That's not to say the current system is perfect when the WCC is all classical games with only tiebreaks going into rapid and such, which is a way more interesting format in the age of engines.

    strange that black chose G5 on move 22 to break out to a new game. White wants to play f4 anyway. Glad that Magnus does not get to play favourites, if he declines to play Nepo again. It seems that Magnus prepared a lot more than Nepo did the last time they met, or that Magnus had to fight harder to beat Nepo, who still was disappointing. Maybe we get to see a much better game from Nepo this time round.

    i just tried it out with stockfish, doing Bd4+ and then Rxb4 -black plays Qb6, which pins the rook to the king on the diagonal *and* protects the b pawn -white plays Qf2, defending the rook and unpinning -black promotes the b pawn, b1=Q -Rxb1 white takes it with rook -Qxb1+ black takes with queen + check originally at Bd4+ the engine gives white a +2.2 advantage, and Rxd4 drops it evenly to 0. Black is gonna win back a rook in a roundabout way and white loses their advantage

    Alireza’s still got time to improve. I hope he does better in future. The older players are just baring their fangs at the cubs right now, telling them to wait for their own era. Also, Alireza has already established himself as a member of the 2800 club, so not Mecking, who peaked at 2635, as opposed to Fischer’s 2785, whom he was compared to. Just so you know, I’m not particularly a fan boy of Alireza.
