🧺My favourite tip was not washing towels with clothes (I had no idea!) . A tip i'd like to contribute is to use a hairdryer if you want to dry out an item that is not allowed to be tumble-dried and you don't have time for it to air-dry.

100% agree with having duplicates of your most worn stuff! Makes so much sense

🧺 💓 I totally agree re: airing your clothes out! I am also a fan of hand washing, especially my designer tees (yes, I like a logo 🤣). It’s gentle and I like to wash my tees often, so it’s less damaging. I have many dry clean only items but the quality is really good. So like you mentioned I had to factor in the cost of professional cleaning for these items. It still works out cheaper though, they last longer and I have to shop less to replace them. ☺️

You can also dry clean at home. I have dry clean kits (woolite and dryel have some online) so I just do it on my own. For coats, I’ll take them to get professionally cleaned once a year after the season is over.

🧺 I barely wash most of my outer layer clothing. Sweaters, blazers, jeans and trousers are all on that list so I almost never go to the dry cleaner. Dry cleaning is horrible for the environment! Love the tip about airing garments out. I’m definitely going to try it!

Absolutely. I do a second spin and then t shirts etc just immediately dry on clothes hangers.

Great video! I try to take really good care of my clothes too, and I’m a big fan of airing out clothes & wearing them multiple times. I prefer 100% cotton jeans because they tend to hold their shape better - Zara has always been a favorite of mine, & I keep them for years. Thanks for the tips & reminders! ❤

I’m an old lady now, but so far no one has said I smell like one. 😁😁 I wash all of my clothes in cold water on a gentle/hand wash cycle in my washing machine. I dry very few pieces in the clothes dryer. I have 2 drying racks. Even at my age I am incapable of eating spaghetti without getting sauce stains on myself..🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️…so I will immediately treat the stain. Lots of things will remove stains…hydrogen peroxide, Dawn dish soap, vinegar. Depending on the weather I will air out a piece outside before I wear it again. I very rarely wash any of my jeans. When I do, it’s still cold water, gentle cycle, very little detergent. Then they air dry. I put on any perfume/ scent before I put the clothes on. My knits are all folded and in the dresser or chest. I don’t have a large budget for clothes, but taking care of my inexpensive wardrobe preserves it and extends the life of it. Good hangers are worth it. There is no correct 1 way only to fold clothes. Do it how you like. 🧺

🧺 Thanks for the tips, Christina! I'm the laundry queen of the household, and I've noticed that men's clothing, even formal wear, tends to always be machine washable. Women's garments with similar material composition will insist on hand washing. Heckin' sus. So, I started throwing those "hand wash only" items in a garment bag and washing them as normal and have had no issues. IMO, need to be more careful about the dryer than the washing machine. When in doubt, air dry!

It wasn’t until I started honing in on my personal style and buying quality items, even very inexpensively at thrift stores, that 🧺 actually became a wonderful part of my life routine. I actually find it somewhat relaxing to go through and do laundry, mend/maintain, and organize my clothing. Call us weird. Most of our laundry is towels and bedding and kids clothing. And since buying them quality clothing as well, I’m teaching them to do laundry similarly, of course, without steaming at this point… 😅 thank you for sharing, and I would love to see what you are loving with make up and skin care at the moment!

🧺 Most unique tip I learned from this video was wearing layers to prevent sweaters and jackets from needing to be washed more frequently! How do you store specialty clothes you’ve worn once or a few times but won’t wear again for awhile? Do you keep it with your clean clothes or separately?

I would air it for a day or two and steam if needed, then storing with other clean clothes is fine, as long as it doesn't smell (in which case you would be washing it at this point)

I like to put my clothes in the dryer for 5 minutes (I do time it) on medium heat before I air dry. This takes out most wrinkles and reduces the stiffness.

I agree, that seperating the laundry into colours and fabrics does help that the things last longer☺️

Great tips! Some clothes I very rarely wash too, but the end of each season I try to hand wash all my knits and wool trousers so that when they go into storage they are fresh and it makes a nice changing of season ritual too ☺️🧺

Helps keep moths out too. Moths like the smell of a worn item more than a fresh one apparently. I use lavender to keep them.out but if you're concerned or have to kill any off bag the item for protection and place in your freezer for a few days.

🧺 Happy to see someone doing the same as me when it comes to laundry/taking care of clothes!! I steam almost everything, and never put denim in a washing machine! I spot clean and steam 😊

I hardly wash my jeans either, though sometimes I put them in a plastic bag in the freezer for a night and then “shake them out” (to get rid of any bacteria and skin flakes) 😅

Genius Video - concise and so informative! I’m kind of mystified by my fellow Americans doing SO. MUCH. LAUNDRY. I learned the ‘airing out’ tip in Germany for Sweaters and outerwear (especially after a night going out clubbing with smokers 😮), and regularly wear my Pie es half a dozen times before laundering them.I mean, none of us are out doing manual labor in the hot sun, so why do we think our clothes need to be washed after every wear?

30° eco wash for almost everything (occasional hot wash for white towels and bed linen). Spot clean jeans, wear something that covers your armpits when piling on the cashmere or wool. I don't own a tumble dryer and am pretty prejudiced against them. I wash cashmere and (usually) wool in baby shampoo and then squeeze the surplus water with a towel burrito so they dry more quickly.

🧺 I dry as much as possible on hangers (I like wooden as they are more durable than velvet) so I rarely have to iron.

Amazing video! I actually hate doing laundry! I live with 3 boys so I’m doing laundry almost daily. Boys are stinky and dirty lol. The thing I do the most is air dry. I don’t put a lot of clothing in the dryer. Just mostly towels & work clothes. Sheets I put on a lower setting. 🧺

I also air out my chloting. not wear once and then wash. not undies etc or very dirty ,sweat pieces ofc. a goo tip for winter is also a wool silk tee ior a long sleeve nstead of cotton. breaths better ,keep you warmer, and less wash. like fex from brands like calidan or northern playground. thin merino under tees ,singlets also is great in cold winter.

Excellent tips! You covered all areas. I got rid of my dryer many years ago as I only used it for towels and bedding. Everything else was air dried on the clothes line. Also the cost of electricity to run it was expensive. I agree it's a great idea to layer clothes to reduce washing. 👏🏻

Thanks for a great video Christina! You offered excellent tips to keep quality clothing for the long term. I can vouch for Tru Earth as well. Once I tried their strips I have been a loyal customer. So neat, clean, convenient and effective.

Good tip: get undershirts that have a barrier under the arms for sweat. My hubs has some in the brand Thompson Tees (I think that’s what they’re called??) that are a vneck style so they work under basically any shirt. They’ve got a thick padded part under the arm. Not sure if they have some for ladies but worth looking into if you sweat heavily!

Hi! You’ll be please to know I was actually doing laundry while watching this video. Thanks for the steaming underarms in blazers tip. I’ve never tried this to combat stink! Also, I fold my knits the same way you do, then I hang them on the bottom rung of a wooden hanger where the fold is. But I have more hanging space than shelf space so this works for me! 🧺 Great vid! I also use the True Earth detergent sheets (about 2 years now) and am super happy with their products. I actually use a 7th Gen dish soap (plant based) to soak any of my woolen sweaters, then flat dry them. I do that once a year if needed before Summer comes along :-).

Great suggestions. I stopped buying clothes that required dry cleaning when I retired 12 years ago. I stopped washing my jeans often when I found out a couple of years ago, that’s it’s good them not to be washed often. I will replace the few plastic storage bags I have with more canvas storage. 🧺 I've always washed towels separately to avoid getting lint on my clothing but never thought about it wearing things out! I live in New Zealand so most people don't have driers and are used to air drying on the line but I've just got a drier and love it for finishing off sheets in winter when there's not enough sun in the day to fully dry them. They only take 10 mins and it means sheets are done in a day.

You read my mind! I accidentally shrunk my husband's wool cardigan and really don't want to do that again, and I really hate stubborn pit stains in my lighter coloured clothes.

I buy quality and wash everything on cold. I also don't wash every wear though for certain pieces and use wash bags for delicates

Very helpful. I do the same with r-wearing items, even buy work out stuff, I am an instructor. On days I teach a light weight class, those clothes will be good for my class the next day. I have a lot of pieces from a vintage reproduction brand that I looove but they can’t be washed all the time. So I am also a fan of the air out or steaming method. Also, steaming can be a great method to “clean” thrifted items that you can’t just throw in the wash (like blazers) I’m all about it.

I pretty much hand wash everything or steam them. My standing steamer is in the bedroom closet, so it's very handy. If I wear something, I hang on steamer so I can steam and wear it again. I believe it's the dryer that ruins a lot of clothes tbh

Great tip! What steamer would you recommend? I have had a couple fail on me. So I’m a little salty about it but always looking for recommendations!

My SAMSUNG WASHER/ DRYER set are the crown jewel of my house honestly. I save a lot of time and energy not having to go to the laundromat. That said: I wash my bedsheets ONCE A WEEK (Saturday) in detergeant and fabric softener. I wash my underwear ONCE a WEEK (Saturday) after a single use in detergeant, fabric softener and bleach if necessary. I wash my work shirts after 2 or 3 uses depending on the color and dirtyness. I wash my sweatshirts maybe once every 3 weeks depending on dirtyness.

“Shout It Out” works on all stains❤️

I haven't finished the video yet so may cover this too but if a t shirt is really hard worn and icky under the arms (stained and/or a smell not coming out with a single wash) then surgical spirit (rubbing alcohol) on that area before a wash is incredibly effective

Love this Christina! One more tip - air your sweaters inside out, and spritz with rubbing alcohol to kill germs. 🦠 Saves on laundry … and time

The alcohol can bleach the color out of cashmere and probably wool. I had a dry cleaner friend who explained it to me after I purchased a beautiful green cashmere sweater that had tiny light spots on it. Any alcohol, including the alcohol in cologne and some antiperspirants.

🧺 Yes! Clothes get worn out from washing - not from wearing. (At least for adults)

I’ve been using TruEarth for awhile. It’s gentle, easier to use than liquids, takes no storage at all and I believe it’s better for fabric. After, I use the dryer balls. No fuss,no muss!

I line dry just about all of my clothing except a very few things on a huge drying rack. I have had cheap Target Mossimo brand t shirts last for years and years doing thing. I also wash my t shirts in lingerie bags. Anything with a zipper gets put into a load of laundry for zippers, which has been preventing damage to other things like shirts. I do the same as you and wash my things as little as possible.

Air drying has become my best friend ever since I accidentally shrunk a bunch of my boyfriends favourite tees 😂😂🤣 Also started washing things less. I realized I was washing clothes WAY too much

🧺Rewatched the video 3 times😍 I would love to know how you wash your cashmere sweaters (hand wash or in the washing machine alone). I had mine for 3 month now and it's still not smelly or dirty but one day I have to wash it😅
