You Never Know How Much Good You Do

www.mormonchannel.org/watch/se...
How many things did you get checked off your “to- do” list today? Sometimes, the most important things you do each day were never even on your list. As we help a neighbor or family member, we often overlook the results. You might worry about the things you never get done, but President Gordon B. Hinckley reminds us, “You never know how much good you do.”

Tears in my eyes watching this. As a widowed father of 4 somedays i look at the skies and call out my wifes name I miss her companionship in helping me with our kids but I know as long as I stay on the covenant path the Lord will always be with me and my 4 kids.

+RubyOpheliaQuinn these seriously are the best. I just read a talk by one of our church leaders that basically said "You're doing better than you think." I have 4 young kids and sometimes at the end of the day when the kids are crying, the house is a mess and I am just tired, I feel discouraged. But then I remember...we are doing more good than we think. Anyway if you like these videos, and you want to know more about what our church teaches about families you can go to mormon.org/chat to ask any questions you may have. Just thought I would throw it out there! :) God bless!

When I saw this video, I was touched to see how much this person was willing to give to others. I also felt saddened to watch this person give up over and over on her own needs. I would like to tell this person that her needs matter too, just as much as all the people she served that day. There were times she could have asked the people she was serving for the support she wanted. I'm sure they would have been glad to help. Please never give in or give up on yourself, you matter too. The friends she served would probably have felt hurt to find out how her day turned out and have wanted for her to be considered too. It's okay for your needs to matter too. It's okay to ask for the help you need. If you know someone who behaves this way regularly, please give them a hug.

I have felt like this so many times, in my past, especially raising 5 children alone in the Gospel (my dear husband is not a member). I learned the vital importance of saying something like "I am sorry, but that won't work for me right now." or "I am sorry but I can't today." And I don't sign up for everything!! I sorted out once that I was putting my name on that sign up sheet so that I didn't look "bad". Your health is important. You DO have to put your "oxygen mask" on first so you have enough "oxygen" to help others. AND, be prayerful about when you say YES I can do that... we cannot do it all, and Heavenly Father does not expect us to "walk faster". He just expects us to walk. :) ♥

@@AMBERLARIOS-qz2lq My mom died about 8 months after returning from my mission. I was so angry at God. When she was in the hospital we prayed and fasted for her to be healed. We gave her blessings. I prayed, "there are so many rotten people in the world, if you have to take someone, take one of them! I served a MISSION for you and you're letting this happen?!" Watching her get worse and worse, then finally die was not something I'd wish for anyone. The Spirit whispered that it was her time and gave me comfort. I know God loves us and in eternity He will make up for all the suffering and crap we go through in this life. I pray you can find peace and comfort in the atonement of Jesus Christ if you haven't already. God bless you!

What I love about this video: President Hinckley's quote. The realistic messy house. The mom who is having a tough day. The cameo by Al Fox Carraway. What concerns me about this video: My first impression was that the video portrayed an already overwhelmed mother who over-committed to others and neglected her own needs. She encouraged similar behavior in her sister when she asked "who would help them if you left?" I believe in serving in the kingdom -- I'm currently the compassionate service coordinator in my ward and have been so touched by the responses when service is needed. I also believe that you need to put on your own oxygen mask first. I love the idea that sometimes our day doesn't go as planned, and sometimes we disappoint people, and sometimes we don't complete our checklist. But I believe that this concept could have been presented in a healthier way.

Cried for minutes after watching this even though I'm a man. It was a much needed catharsis. I feel intensely the pain of sacrifice that is so often required in the raising of children (4 here) and the giving of service to others. Often and without even thinking about it, I repress the feelings and pain in order to provide support and relief to my wife. Just feeling these emotions and letting the tears come has increased my strength and I feel enabled to willingly go and do the dishes and sweeping and lunch making so that my four young children and wife will have a good start to their day tomorrow.

Thanks, I have seen this video before but it really hit home and helped me tonight. People don't always value the little things that pile up on us, that we do to keep things moving, and sometimes what we think we should be doing gets completely pushed aside. We just need to pray for strength that the things we manage to do are the ones the Lord wants us to achieve and trust that he is guiding us in our hearts.

These Mormon messages are made with a lot of thought. Many people have been talking about the negatives in these different videos. Yes they may not all be perfect in every detail. But the truth is many people out there watch these and receive inspiration and it uplifts them. We can find negativity in ANYTHING. How about stop criticizing and see what you can apply to your own life. This has been hard for me because I used to criticize more, Now I am really trying to be a disciple of christ and sure things can seem silly or I may not fully agree but I see what I can apply to myself to help me become better. Please think about that.

One thing that really stuck out to me is when the kid was praying at the end and said, "Thank thee that we could get all the things done that you needed us to do today." There was one word in there that changes the whole meaning for me. "Thank thee that we could get all the things done that *you* needed us to do today." I think sometimes we beat ourselves up because we didn't cross off everything on our to-do list, when in reality God has a different list, full of opportunities to do good and help people. Doing good is not about how many errands you can stuff into a day. It's about taking the opportunity to do what God needs you to do. Christ went about helping people, not doing His own work or serving His own will, but His Father's work and His Father's will. And if Christ is the author of everything that is good, if all good things come from Christ, then to do good means almost by definition to do as Christ did. To not run your own errands, but to "get all the things done that God needs us to do today."

This is sooo true when we do good things, make personal sacrifices and bring happiness to people they end up doing the same and the people they affect in turn affect others in a positive way. The love branches out and has the ability to touch thousands all over the world. We don't always see this effect but if we keep our hearts open we can feel the positive impact to this wonderful world we live in. I'm not Mormon, I'm not anything but I try to love and share the love. Anyway I love this message thank you for sharing it.

I appreciate that this video is an attempt to uplift. But I have to say, this sort of mentality - that in order to be "good Mormons" we have to say yes to every single request from others, to the point of neglecting our own emotional needs - is one of the main reasons that so many women in the church struggle with depression. It's upsetting to me that this video seems to be praising this woman for putting her own emotional needs very last on her list. I feel like that isn't the sort of thing we ought to be encouraging in the church, because glorifying this kind of behavior encourages people to neglect themselves, which in turn results in very real emotional health problems. This glorification of self-neglect is a recipe for depression and deep distress in one's life. And i wish the church could find a way to encourage women to serve others without also encouraging them to completely neglect their own needs.

Monica H, you’re missing the point. The woman in the video is serving others and that’s what the lord has always taught. Serving others does not mean self-neglect. It is up to you wether you choose to serve or not, but serving brings happiness and peace, it helps you forget your own troubles which is one of the reasons I personally believe that the lord has asked us to serve. If helping others was self-neglect then I’m pretty sure that the lord would’ve never asked us to do it or he himself would’ve never done it. Serving others is building up love for yourself and for the people you help as well and the lord will recognize it and give you blessings. For this woman her blessing was being able to realize that she has been able to bless the lives around her and make them easier and she learned a lesson “you never know how much good you do”. My mom is the primary president and she is always helping others around her, she makes sure every kid in primary is alright, every teacher is good, and that her family is well. Because of her service I’ve seen some of the blessings the lord has given to her such as being able to pull through tough days, helping her keep her responsibilities as a mom, a teacher, and as the primary President together, and she has also been blessed with being able to find comfort and joy.

I also fail to see how the video is "praising" her self-sacrifice. We see her break down, grow more agitated, and have an awful time due to her own fault of squishing everyone in. Her perspective changes at the end on hearing her son won the science fair, but she doesn't recieve the visions of the other people. She is taking solace in her altruism, yet stil mourns the loss of one very special event. And is this not reality for many a parent? Is it not something that we can all relate to in one way or another? The point wasn't to glorify bad prioritizing, but instead to show what sacrifices do for others. By no means is this my favorite video, or would I ever encourage people to be 100% like the Mom. But the message...? The message of our butterfly effects is an important one, and who better to focus that message on than an overworked mother?

It's true that the intent of this video was a good one, but I agree with Monica that the message is devalued by showing her giving up something that was so important to her mental health. She gave up many other things to serve which I think we can all relate to. Service is never convenient. But to show her also giving up something so important to her mental health is a message that is not helpful to be sending.

Love what I believe the intended message was, however, not being kind to ourselves will have an impact on our ability to serve. We need to be able to create better balance, accept service and even set boundaries that may result in sometimes saying I can't do that. Alternate endings: 1. If this is a single mom, her VT arrives to babysit on time, finishes the dinner and takes it to the family while the mom meets her cousin. 2. If married, dad adjusted his schedule weeks ago and is home to actively preside. He finishes dinner and takes it to the family while mom meets her cousin. In family prayers gratitude is expressed for mom, even though she is not there.

Been there, done that! Makes me see what really matters. The son's prayer was a bucket-filler. A person has to have something in their bucket to be able to give to others. May we each fill each others buckets that none go empty. Alan Jackson has a song about "if everybody every where had a lighter load to bear and a little bigger piece of the pie, we'd be living us a pretty good life. One hand does wash the other.

I am a single mother right now. I am battling to get back to church because it conflicts with one of my jobs. My husband was deported to Mexico because of an expired visa and down in Mexico he self medicated himself with adventure and then cleaned up and got baptized. However one day he told me that he did not love me the same anymore. And that was when I just knew in my heart there was someone else for him. We have a four year old boy who is adhd and I struggle everyday with college, keeping him calm, and here recently with my faith. I feel like things are never going to get better, although I know one day they will. I am exactly like this woman in the video. I never say no to nobody and I always aim to make people happy. I realize now that even something as simple as prayer can begin to give me hope for a better change in mine and my sons life

"Many Mormon women do not have clear boundaries for themselves. They feel a sense of confusion about who they are, because many competing voices lay claim to them and they try to accommodate them all. For example, when I became a member of the Relief Society general presidency, I was appalled at how many women were tormented by guilt about their responsibilities as mothers. They seemed unable to see a boundary between themselves and their children. If a child deviated from what was expected, it became a burden that the mother bore. . . . It is a strength for women to be able to cross their own boundaries easily when they are meeting the needs of their children and serving others, but it is a great disadvantage when they feel every call for service as an imperative which they are obligated to meet. Remember, a boundary has “yes” on one side and “no” on the other. A woman who never feels that she can say “no” is lacking an important element of personal identity and, hence, personal safety.” -Chieko Okazaki, Boundaries, p. 5-6

But the best way to deal with this is to appreciate what you accomplished that day, count your blessings and move on! Pray every day to your Heavenly Father and he will help you get those things done, but in due times.... the Lord works in mysterious ways, I speak from experience and I'm sure everyone does.

This is an important message, that we will never know the good we do when we make sacrifices to help others. God sees our offering and accepts it and we can feel good about that. But we can also serve and love and sacrifice without sacrificing much needed activities for our own mental health. It's important as women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to serve and love and sacrifice AND make time for self care and even some of our wants so that we can continue to serve and love and sacrifice. Please know that it is OK and necessary to say no sometimes too. You get to decide and seek the spirit for those times, but know that there is still an incredible amount of good you do that you'll never know even when you need to say no to take care of your own mental health.

Many of my friends have shared this video using social media, hoping to receive a much needed pick me up I watched it. This video is so unhealthy! Yikes! This poor mother portrayed needs to learn boundaries and self care. I wept for her at end not because the message was touching my heart but because I was so sad for her. I honestly feel like the same message could have been expressed in a much more healthy and positive light. I hope no mother feels she needs to sacrifice herself for some unseen benefits of others. We, as women, can still be powerhouses for good and take care of ourselves. An empty pitcher can not give water to others until it's full.

I think it's kind of funny how the parents depicted can never really be shown losing their tempers like a normal person would. And even when they just calmly say "Go to bed!" the kids immediately obey. :D If only life was like that! This was great, though. It's hard sometimes to feel like you're doing everything you can, but as long as you're doing your best, blessings come!

+Abelhawk I was raised in a family like that and I have tried to create a family like that. We did lose tempers at times but we also had plenty of times when as a child with siblings we were more obedient than not and as a mom there were plenty of times I could have lost my temper and didn't. Just letting you know it is possible and worth trying to make it happen. I wonder if its one of those things on the list that we don't always acknowledge when it is happening. Keep trying. I appreciate your comment at the end. By the way, I am a mother of 12 children and we have lots of fun memories including (and maybe even most of them) days that didn't go as planned.

President Hinckley's message is timeless, and I can tell from many of these comments that this has touched many people for good, but is anyone else worried about the Mom in this video? It's okay to have boundaries and okay to say no sometimes. Don't run faster than you have strength. Burnout and depression are a real problem, simplify! Do all the good you can, but that doesn't mean you come last in your own life.

I thought this was a beautiful message. To those criticizing the video: I believe the point was to show that living a giving life through service can sometimes be hard and that it is not always immediately apparent the amazing difference small acts can have on others lives (hence the title "You Never Know.") I think anyone criticizing this video should watch again, trying not to judge the mother because you do not agree with her antics or her parenting, or wonder where the father is/if there is a father. Imagine, instead, that you are the mother who needed your friend to babysit while you went to the doctor- where you are going to hear the results of your recent biopsy. Or the family who just birthed a little one, who has been clinging to life for the past 6 weeks, and you have finally been able to bring your precious one home. How grateful would you be to the woman in this video for lightening your load, if only for a moment?

+Ashley Frederickson The criticism is based on a perception that the mother overburdening herself the wahy she is here, is somehow a good thing. It isn't, and that's not the point of the video to say it is. She's making a mistake by committing to do too much. But the lord still accepts her sacriofice and she's doing some good too -- before the inevitable mommy meltdown sometime in the next 4-5 years if she doesn't learn to find time to chill.

We should be open to help those around us because often the Lord sent them our way. Made me want to cry. As mothers we give, give, give but we also need to share with those around us our true feelings and not hide them. Being authentic about our struggles, limitations, and when we don’t feel appreciated opens up the conversation about how to balance life.

I liked the part about the prayer. When the kid asked "What about prayer?" This is the struggle I am going through with my family. I am a member but my family is not. I am trying to institute prayer into our family life and they are fighting me like I asked a hard thing of them to take a few minutes out of their day in the morning and night to get together as a family and pray. I wish and pray that soon they will be willing to pray with me and feel of the spirit as we pray as a family.

Sad video, and sadder still all the women who love and resonate with it. When my activity in church or life looks like this, I do not feel empowered or joyful--I feel discouraged and weak, and I know that I have need to repent and better listen to the spirit which brings joy and love and teaches me not to lie to my children, not to fail in commitments to friends, not to do things out of pressure, guilt, fear of what others will think, or false obligation. Christian service is centered in joy; it magnifies and expands us. Never did this mother pause and pray for inspiration to know what to do. If she had she would have received inspiration about what commitments to make, and wonderful joyful insights about how to help and serve in ways that also edified her, and she would have her angels helping her (so she wouldn't forget about the dinner, and then forget to turn the oven on, etc.) She was not acting in the power of the Lord, she was acting in her own weakness. Sure, God can make good out of even the worst days and the worst choices we make. But sending the message that the behavior this woman displayed in this video is Godly or something to be admired is false. Women can be so much better than this, and they need to know that. Please do not validate this kind of false martyrdom. Please instead show messages of women truly acting in the power of God, filled with revelation, love, joy, integrity, and personal strength. Those are the kind of women the Lord needs.

I like this video. Yes we do need to be able to say no, as some others have commented. I think as members we struggle sometimes with this. In order to remain happy, healthy and not become overloaded and resentful it is so important to take time for ourselves. Its not selfish. You cant take care of others if you are not taking care of yourself.

this made me cry.. a reminder that all the things we do for the people around seems to be like an ordinary thing without realizing how valuable it is for them and how great the impact of our efforts to their lives..
