Discovering Truth

What is truth, and how can we know it? President Dieter F. Uchtdorf explained: “The ‘truths’ we cling to shape the quality of our societies as well as our individual characters. All too often these ‘truths’ are based on incomplete and inaccurate evidence. … The thing about truth is that it exists beyond belief. It is true even if nobody believes it” (“What Is Truth?” [Brigham Young University devotional, Jan. 13, 2013], speeches.byu.edu).
It is good to accept the fact that we simply don’t know all things. We can’t see everything, but our Heavenly Father can. We have been given the promise that if we will search for the truth, study it out in our minds, and ask with a sincere heart, it will be confirmed to us (see D&C 9:8; Moroni 10:3-5).
Heavenly Father is pleased with us when we seek to discover truths. He loves teaching us line upon line, precept on precept. As we strive to learn and have faith in Him, He will bless us to see things as they really are.

For years I have struggled, not only with my feelings of differing churches but also, with feelings of differing political parties. I always forget that we are all children of God and that we all just have different opinions and experiences. Not that one is right or wrong but that each person sees the world in a different way and that only God sees the world as a whole. I need to trust God and love all those I meet no matter how differing we are because only through God, can I also see the whole world.

I cannot help but thing how timely this is. It has been mentioned by media and hollywood recently how important "your truth" is, speaking to individuals. But how much more eternal is "the truth". The more society insists that an individual person's view needs to be respected an upheld, at the expense of free speech and the ability to disagree, the more society moves in a very dangerous directly. How wonderful to know that the Lord knows THE truth and that he is watching over us and will provide shelter from the storm where needed.

There are forces promoting individualism. My truth, my likes, my family, my life. It is OK to defend them when real truth assists and validates us. There are things on which we have some freedom and are not important from an eternal perspective. On the other hand, there are other thing on which we still may have some freedom BUT have eternal consequences. There are others on which WE DO NOT HAVE FREEDOM. This last group has to do with civil rights and human rights. However, what the world must understand is that, THERE IS A FOURTH GROUP, the laws of God, not because they are enforced but because we have chose to obey them. We believe that some day, you will have no option but to accept these laws as there will come a day when every knee shall bend. God's laws > Human rights > Civil rights. My household and I shall serve Jehovah. TRUTH IS NOT RELATIVE. THERE CANNOT BE TWO, THREE OR INFINITE TRUTHS. Truth is the knowledge of things as they were, are and will be.

A very insightful and wise person will fear the lord first in the quest for truth, and build upon this rock of fear in the Lord the God Supreme unto faith that which is in the unseen father of lights. Well said Dieter, your absolute one truth is a inspiring video, that is very foundational to our child of God perspective. Thanks again for this and your time speaking to us about such things.

Isaac Anyimiah We believe in God the Eternal Father, in his Son Jesus Christ and in the Holy Ghost. The Father is the Supreme Creator and we are his Children. We don’t believe there is anyone above him. As his children and through the grace of Christ we can improve, be a little more loving, more patient, more intuitive, and on and on. Yes we believe He wants us to be even like he is. But he will always be our a Father and our God. And we understand this is accomplished through His grace, our faithfulness, and gradually through a process beyond the grave.

@@ianyimiah i dont realy remember enyone teaching me that there where other gods before God, but i do remember being taught that we will be like God someday. We are His spirit children, and we are alwase growing. In the future, we will be put into one of three kindoms. Celestial Kindom, Tellestial Kingdom, or Terrestrial Kindom. People in rhe Celestial Kingdom will be with God. People in the Telestial Kindom will see Jesus. People in the Terrestrial Kindom will have the Holy Ghost. Before we came to earth we where in Heaven and we made the choice to follow God's plan for us. Hopefully that helped. There is a lot more to learn about our beliefs though

As I watched the story unfold of the young husband going up into the mountains for firewood, I had a feeling something "bad" was going to happen. Of course he got stuck and being alone, couldn't get out. As he did everything he could, first by asking the Lord for help, then setting his dog out at the main road, he finally realized that he might as well cut the wood and load it, fulfilling the reason he was there in the first place. Having been stuck a few times myself while in the mountains, I sensed his frustration and fear. But again, he demonstrated his faith by asking the Lord for his help. Lo and behold, the truck now easily backed out with the heavy load giving him the traction he needed. Sometimes we need to have a heavy load placed on us before we fully understand and demonstrate our need for Heavenly Father's help. Thank you for sharing such a story to remind me of that gospel truth!

This video is so true, you'd need to be blind to believe the church is true. If they all could see, they'd know it was only an elephant, but they can't so they believe something that's not true. Just like if believers in "the church" could/would open their eyes, they would see it's not true. It takes closed eyes/minds to be deceived.

There are 6 aspects of the mind that link to create a 7th central node: EGO, BODY, SUPEREGO, INTELLECT, ID, ENDOCRINE SYSTEM, ->back to Ego. Each aspect demands part of your attention and claims it knows the truth. Not because it does, but simply because that is its program. They stay on, basically, transmitting two signals: "use me" & "do you want this?" Remaining humble means remembering your system is subject to data quality and limited by access. The central-node becomes the reflection of who you are as it is the binary gate that connects the aspects together and decides that it does want to use something and it does want this. Therefore, you do become your decisions. Also, if you plot these on a sphere and spin it (the thought pattern is circular), you can use the same rules for taking the measurement of kinetic energy in a spinning object.

Wonderful! If I were to apply this to modern science it is important to view true observations of ALL fields of science. It is only then can we comprehend the truth of scientific discovery as it properly fits into Nature's magnificent puzzle. As we obtain knowledge and wisdom of Nature's puzzle we can then discover the truth of new natural laws.

As our knowledge of all science fields grow, the more intertwined the disciplines are. Such as bio-engineering. As I re-read the Book of Mormon, I never noticed before that the marauding Lamanites that destroyed Ammonihah (which was a city warned that if they did not repent, they would be destroyed...and they were) are the SAME Lamanites that got angry with themselves (then shortly after blamed it on others) for slaying their own brethren (because the brethren did not believe as they did).

One key aspect of this message in regards to finding truth certainly rings true: it is often best to consider and integrate multiple different lines of evidence and observation, and not solely rely on our own personal experience. Applying this principle to investigating the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon requires that we look closely and honestly at the evidences or lack thereof with respect to the varied disciplines of Mesoamerican archaeology, Mesoamerican anthropology, Mesoamerican population genetics, etc. While our personal experience should be considered in reaching our conclusions, it should not trump the many independent lines of empirical evidence.

So to avoid making the 'fallacy of composition' I should ignore when someone is 'begging the question' or 'arguing from incredulity'? Powerful. simple. beautiful! The Lord brings me falsehoods, for with this ‘truth’ they will be opaque. Thank you, you have made my day!

I also like the part where a person who discovered the trunk thought its sound was a snake blowing a trumpet. SO FUNNY!
