Hey mate, thanks a lot for your videos, you're doing an incredible job helping to start my business in Australia. I have one question about ChAFTA; I've asked my supplier about and they are charging me a fee to work under ChAFTA agreement, is that normal? I don't really know if there's something to do to import under ChAFTA or if you just get the benefits of the agreement without doing any paperwork, which is what they are trying to charge me for.
@courierquest
3 ай бұрын
Hey mate, thank you that means a lot! So you definitely need a Certificate of Origin (COO) to get the benefits of CHAFTA so they are correct in that aspect. I don’t know how much it costs them though a supplier likely won’t charge if the order is big enough. It’s probably worth you working out how much you would save on import duty with a COO. e.g if they wanna charge you 50usd but you’ll save $500 it’s a no brainer. You’ll need to find out the rate for your goods from the government website. Google certificate of origin to see what one looks like, it’s an official certificate they have to apply for but I think they can get it the same day they apply

Thank you for your video, very helpful. Do you know anyone who is importing toys into AU, there seems to be a lot of standards that need to be conformed to. Any suggestions or help on the subject would be appreciated. Thank you.

I've honestly avoided toys for that reason so I don't actually know, sorry. The good thing about that is it means there's potentially less competition because some people will be put off by the extra work so you should still look in to it!

Hey mate, great video! Question, if you import and don't pay any tax or duties cause the value of the imported products are lower than $1000. How do you manage the selling in Australia? Is there any tax involved or I just can sell online and get the money straight in the bank? Also, are the $1000 import tax free a yearly amount or I could do 100 import of $1000 and avoid paying tax and duties? Thanks for your time and amazing videos!!
@courierquest

Hey mate! You’ll still need to pay tax on income from sales in the same way you would if you were selling any goods. It’s 1000 AUD per import but you may find it’s cheaper to order in bulk and make savings that way

Hi Mate, I think there is now GST on things under $1000 as well. Also are you doing with your imported goods? are you selling it on shopify or locally?
@courierquest

Hey mate. I think some overseas suppliers will collect GST. Not all though and definitely no import tax below $1,000 Mostly selling on Shopify with some small trade shows. You importing?
I am staying in Australia I want to buy from Alibaba I want to know how to do it.
Hi there, we are a new starting company but can you do a video about vat tax and how to claim it back. We are thinking of importing from Alibaba (china) and would love to know more. Myself and my twin sister are starting this business venture have ordered a few samples and some bulk items but she has no idea about vat taxes. Amateurs lol Thanks :)

hey, just want to know that if the order is above AUD $1000, in that case what are the documents we will get from supplier and what are the documents we need to make it ready. also, do we need to submit them to customs and what will be the procedure. Thanks
@courierquest
4 ай бұрын
Hey mate, tbh I usually use DHL/Fedex and they act as a go between. The supplier should attach all necessary documents, customs will create an invoice which DHL/Fedex then request payment for by emailing you a payment link. If customs need more information they may also request a copy of the invoice you got from the supplier as well as a photo of the goods and proof of payment. But as long as the supplier does everything correctly all you have to do is wait for an invoice from DHL/Fedex, pay it, and your goods will be delivered the next day. If you’re importing by sea the process will be similar but you’ll be dealing with an agent. I wouldn’t recommend dealing directly with customs (Australian Border Force) but it’s probably possible
Great video, do you know the best way to pay a chinese company and keep myself protected? This company High-per motorcycles has given me a bank account to pay to and it's not BSB and account

Thanks mate! You could look in to using an escrow service. Alibaba has one built in to its platform which I would always use for the first transaction at least even if it costs a bit more.

Yea just be careful with the exchange rate though. E.g. if you buy in USD allow a bit of a buffer when you work out what that is in AUD

Is it possible/a valid option to ask the supplier to split the +$1000 shipment into multiple smaller individual packages each with total value of less than $1k to avoid 10% gst?
@007lutherking

Will this method save on shipping cost?
@courierquest
22 күн бұрын
Great question. Customs always base it on the total value of the shipment, regardless of how many packages it is split in to. You might consider making smaller, more frequent orders but then your shipping costs will almost certainly be higher in the long run and you might miss out on some discount pricing that you could access by buying in bigger bulk. Sounds like you might need to pull up a spreadsheet and do some calculations 😃
Did you fill out an import declaration form? First time importing $3000 worth and honestly I just don’t know what to expect or do.

Ah that’s awesome, you probably saved a fair bit of money by importing yourself! The shipping cost does not get factored in when looking at the $1,000 threshold… however, if you’re over the threshold you pay import duty on the goods as well as GST on the goods AND shipping. Not such big deal if you’re registered for GST because you can claim it back but if you’re not then it’s an extra expense to think about.
