You Are What You Eat: The Sunna of Consumption

*Support Zaytuna College's Ramadan 2022 Campaign: zaytuna.edu/illuminate*
The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, exemplified perfection in every aspect. When examining the details of his blessed life, one finds a remarkable balance in the utilization and consumption of his natural surroundings. He lived in harmony with creation and taught, by example, the meaning of vicegerency on earth. Today, when over-consumption has led to a global health crisis and massive wastage has catastrophically polluted our environment, the sunnah of moderation in consumption must be revived and actualized. In this eye-opening talk, Rhamis Kent, one of the top permaculture experts in the US, explains the concept of permaculture as an active eco-design process that harmonizes our natural ecosystems with the needs of creation and how its core tenets align with the prophetic tradition. Filmed in Zaytuna’s very own permaculture garden, you won’t want to miss this insightful lecture and stunning visuals.

Mash- Allah. When nature is out of balance we are out of balance. Humanity needs to learn how to respect nature unconditionally. We have the bounties of Allah in our hand and Insh- Allah we can appreciate and use it respectfully. Surah Hijr Ayat 19-20 And the earth We have spread out (Like a carpet); set thereon Mountains firm and immovable; And produced therein all kinds of things in due balance. And We have provided therein Means of subsistence - for you And for those for whose sustenance Ye are not responsible.”

Thought this was gonna be about nutrition lol. Wow. Opened a whole new world...Will definitely think about what I consume, where and how it is sourced, and how i can minimize my waste production. Always found farmers markets as a great way to get quality foods, the right way.

Teach others beneficial knowledge of Islam, whatever you know, no matter how big or small and help your afterlife! You get credit for each person you teach who ends up practicing or acting upon that knowledge!

Takeaways: 1) what kind of people does your practice produce? 2) Operationalize your ethics. 3) decision-making, should we do something we are technically capable of doing? Consider the 2nd and 3rd effects our decision. Thank you for a great lecture. May Allah Give you Life.
