00:00:21 Introducing brilliant integrative thinker Daniel Schmachtenberger
00:02:54 Finding meaning in the sacred dimensions of our world and the integrated wholeness of reality
00:04:46 Part of love is the desire to know everything about your partner-when loving reality, everything becomes interesting
00:06:37 The fractal nature of reality, looking at it through different lenses and receiving different insights, and how the more perspectives you take, the more depth and richness you perceive
00:08:18 Is there something about the nature of the effort to solve world problems that is at fault in their getting worse?
00:10:30 Daniel’s homeschooling parents set him on the path to following what is good, meaningful, and beautiful right from the start
00:12:38 If you facilitate children’s interest, they end up deep learning in many subjects
00:15:00 Daniel’s early education included systems theory and how to make a better world
00:16:57 How did Daniel come to be such an integrative thinker? Compartmentalized education vs integrated education
00:20:54 The decline of quality aristocratic tutoring has led to the decline of super geniuses
00:28:41 Are we all the result of our education? Tutors and mentors
00:30:48 Integrating across ontology and epistemology, and asking what is the generator function of novel insight?
00:35:36 Man’s greatest purpose is to serve the family of man: women, nature, children
00:37:40 The gruesome deficit of fathering in the world and what Daniel learned about being a man from his dad
00:46:29 On forgiveness, therapy, healing, catalyzing gifts
00:54:15 How do spiritual depths inform our contemporary crises? Needing to ask why we should protect nature shows a real pathological deficit
00:58:00 Orientation to the sacred and the meaningfulness of life forms through a deep bandwidth of connection and sensing
01:01:31 Learning more about the field of conceptuality can both interfere with one’s connection to the Tao and enhance it
01:04:40 Does Daniel believe in God?
01:11:44 In Daniel’s “The Dance of the Tao and the 10,000 Things,” he asks, “Do atoms exist?" Kind of!
01:14:39 The traps of reductionism in facing the metacrisis and how Daniel transcends them
01:17:24 The relation of physical crises to crises of consciousness: co-informing and co-arising facets of an integrative reality
01:21:18 Omni determinism, omni influence
01:22:20 Marvin Harris’ framework for understanding civilization: infrastructure, social structure, and superstructure
01:24:06 What in the interiority of human psyches, experiences & cultures are key drivers of the problems of the world? And how does our changed human genome, microbiome, and neurochemistry fit in?
01:27:11 We evolved to have attachments to 150 people-our tribe-so everything about bonding, attachment theory, the ideas of co-dependence & interdependence evolved in a tribal setting, in fact, we did not evolve to deal with what is going on now
01:29:20 The psychological generator function of the metacrisis results from perceiving the world as fragmented or made up of parts: conflict theory & mistake theory
01:31:40 The Realpolitik assessment of humans: we are dumb and nasty
01:33:21 It’s all based on a trade-off-we’re either trying to benefit ourselves now at the expense of our future selves, individually or collectively, or we just don’t realize the harm that is caused by what we do
01:36:15 Can we survive the current unprecedented metacrisis? No chance can we make it through without the catastrophes intensifying
01:41:44 The human family is not a real thing right now: there is no “we”
01:44:53 How to live a meaningful life? Deeply appreciate and honor the beauty of life, be in service to the beauty of reality, and deepen the capacity for both
01:49:20 Dharma inquiry and the vow of the bodhisattva
01:51:37 Where is the vow of the bodhisattva missing something?
01:54:40 It’s not just what is my unique calling but also what needs doing that no one else wants to do?
01:58:07 One beautiful peak experience is worth all the pain

WOW!!! What an extraordinary interview/conversation, truly remarkable indeed. The availability of this deep discussion to anyone, at no charge, is such an immense blessing. I first learned of Daniel several years ago and I was immediately in awe of his knowledge, but even more impressed by his integrated thinking. And I have been eagerly consuming whatever content I can find that includes him and I always profoundly enjoy it: especially how much I learn. Some of the highlights that stand out for me were his speaking about education and then his father's role in that. Absolutely phenomenal and very touching! Great gratitude and appreciation to all who brought this into being with such open access!

Daniel is missing that the word is the 10,000 things. The word and the wordlessness dance. Instead of “belief in God”, think “trust in God”. The trust is non-propositional because it develops around the experience of an intimate relationship.

Great interview! Especially the last 20 min... I couldn't agree more that this universe is absolutely jaw-droppingly beautiful, and that's what we're here to take part in! It's why I became a nature photographer and an artist. It's why I play music even when no one else is listening. I've had those moments like Daniel described, where I was so awestruck that I'd happily deal with the suffering this life has brought just to have that single experience. And the gift is that they just keep happening! That said, I'm quite concerned about the state of things and the system we've built, which seems to prevent so many people from having this sense of bliss. We really need to awaken people to so many things to free them, but this technology wave is swallowing so many before we ever develop the capacity. The psychological health of young people is so bad that many are killing themselves, or wanting to lash out against society... It's an ugly trend. I hope we can show them there a better way before it's too late...

@@pedrogorilla483 I can't say I was very successful as an artist.... I started shortly after college and spent several years touring around Colorado at art shows and in various galleries. I won competitions and awards and enjoyed moderate recognition, but never really made a solid living at it. But it still means the world to me and I'm happy I do it. I spent most of my day today painting and sculpting my new projects (snakes made from local tree branches I find hiking). To me, life is about deciding how you want to spend your time, and doing what it takes to have that autonomy. I don't make hardly any money, but I don't care. I moved back into the house where I grew up and can live on the cheap, but I get to keep making art and music. It was a sacrifice, one I am still working my way through, but it isn't something I would give up to have more "success" as defined by society. Though I do hope to sell this new work, it isn't about that. It is about being connected to my world in a way that is meaningful. Being able to create something beautiful and being happy is enough for me. I hope you can find the same kind of peace!

I am actually discovering this way of educating myself with interest only now when I am 34. I am happy for finding it eventually at all. It started with making homemade ferments. All sorts of them. These days I am into mead. Read a book about how you can just go for a walk and gather all the ingredients for your mead or drinkable ferment. And the next thing I am doing is buying a book on botanics. And next year I am planning to study and attempt to have my own bees to be able to handle the whole process, be ale to witness it. And people appreciate my efforts as my connection with nature building up seems to be somehow present in the drinks as well. So I go out, offer the mead, tell the story. And maybe someone will also see how wide the picture actually is. Over such a trivial matter - mead! I hope we all find our ways to appreciate all this and thank you for a lovely conversation. Much appreciated.

Schmachdown received! 🙏Good to see Daniel growing out a very respectable wizardly beard... Discussions like this feel fundamentally necessary in (these?) times of 'spiritual fracture' and disillusionment/nihilism 🙏 Re-the hopefully incoming discussion on the 'hurt people hurt people and healed people heal people' : 1) The concepts of 'hurt' and 'heal' meanings / definitions? (Corollary: are the concepts of 'good' and 'evil' outmoded?) 2) Origin stories: where might this 'hurt' and 'heal' energy come from - dare we question the motives of the universe? Or is that beyond the scope (LOL) of this discussion? 3) How does the concept of suffering fit in with the idea of hurt and heal ie - does this imply that suffering (hurt?) is a necessary aspect of the cycle - ie how can we heal if there is no hurt? 4) Are there evolutionary systems that favor healing over suffering (or vice versa) or does the karmic wheel spin towards even split between the two - ie can we load the dice toward 'heal' or is this just another conceit? I'm sure you're already thinking along some (or all) of these line but a little brainstorm never hurt - thanks to the elders at Deep Transformation Podcast for putting this on 🙏 Awaiting my next Schmachdown😄🧙‍♂ thanks @deejay8ch that one's gna stick

I don't believe hurt people hurt people and healed people heal people. Many hurt people do NOT harm others but only healed people can truly help others in a way that actually makes a major difference in their lives. I think the entire world needs healing in some aspect. It's time we all healed.

A superb and enlightening discussion. Respectful. No ego-driven interruptions. Thank you. I have one question - and it’s both naive and deadly serious: why, when there is so much wisdom and learning and vision in one man (of course there are others too), are the people elected to “run the world”, SO ignorant. SO ill-informed. SO lacking in vision, empathy, compassion? Liz Truss. Trump. DeSantis. My question for Mr Schmachtenberger is “Why does power so easily align with ignorance, when one might imagine that it would align instead to wisdom”? Thank you.

While I align with Daniel in many dimensions of the extremely complex issues we have as a species, two things Daniel stated in this interview give me deep concern: 01:07:00 "Do I think that consciousness is an emergent property of brains? Probably not." To me, as a geek interested in life and biology for over 50 years, the answer to that question is: Yes, beyond any shadow of remaining reasonable doubt, and the evidence for that is profound an multitudinous, for any serious student of evolution, behaviour, or their own experience. Just the facts that we go to sleep, or that we can hallucinate, or that we can be rendered unconscious by anesthesia, are major pointers. And of course, human brains, and human behaviour, is necessarily more complex than any brain can itself model in detail; though we can explore the general classes of systems and models and algorithms employed in the evolution of us. And we are sufficiently complex and diverse that it seems clear to me, that should I live for the rest of eternity, there will still be things of interest to explore in being human. Reality does seem to actually be that complex - in spite of the extreme tendencies to over simplify the irreducibly complex that evolution has biased into our neural networks - with work, such biases can be identified and mitigated to a significant degree in most contexts (and it takes a lot of work). 01:07:06 "Do I think there are things that don't have brains that includes other types of biology, have some qualia, that is some quality that it is like to be them? Probably yes." Again, to me, the evidence, from thousands of experiments and close observations I have personally performed, is, beyond any shadow of reasonable doubt - No. And that is not to lessen the complexity of even supposedly simple cellular life. Life seems clearly to be profoundly more complex than most have ever considered the possibility of, and even simple cells are capable of extremely complex responses to context, and the smallest animals we can see even more so; and the general classes of molecular mechanisms for such complexity are reasonably well characterised, and there is still a vast amount unknown about specifics, and there is no logical reason I can see to assign any significant probability to needing mechanisms beyond the general classes of classes of such things as some of us have reasonable confidence about, to explain observations. And that is nothing like saying I know it all - quite the inverse. I "know" enough to have reasonable confidence that all of my understandings are much more accurately characterised as "useful approximations in some contexts" rather than any sort of "Truth". And the confidence I have in the two propositions above is high - .95+.

It pains me that only 200 people have given comments, but happy 40K have seen it. This is one of the most incredible men that has existed. He is no doubt "smart", but in this interview he stresses that the main reason he is what he is can be attributed to his life experiences - mainly because of his parents. One of my favorite lines is "Parent is not just a noun, it's also a verb."

I take your point regarding the 200 comments. Perhaps many just feel that what they have to share is not worthy . I often question everything that I do , and wonder if it is worthy, and if I am just a pointless entity struggling through this existence, and then I lighten up a bit lol..

Topics & Time Stamps - Part 1 (From Website): Introducing brilliant integrative thinker Daniel Schmachtenberger (01:32) Finding meaning in the sacred dimensions of our world and the integrated wholeness of reality (03:52) Part of love is the desire to know everything about your partner-when loving reality, everything becomes interesting (05:47) The fractal nature of reality, looking at it through different lenses and receiving different insights, and how the more perspectives you take, the more depth and richness you perceive (07:13) Is there something about the nature of the effort to solve world problems that is at fault in their getting worse? (08:36) Daniel’s homeschooling parents set him on the path to following what is good, meaningful, and beautiful right from the start (10:22) If you facilitate children’s interest, they end up deep learning in many subjects (12:24) Daniel’s early education included systems theory and how to make a better world (14:46) How did Daniel come to be such an integrative thinker? Compartmentalized education vs integrated education (16:32) The decline of quality aristocratic tutoring has led to the decline of super geniuses (19:58) Are we all the result of our education? Tutors and mentors (28:11) Integrating across ontology and epistemology, and asking what is the generator function of novel insight? (29:07) Man’s greatest purpose is to serve the family of man: women, nature, children (33:07) The gruesome deficit of fathering in the world and what Daniel learned about being a man from his dad (35:19) On forgiveness, therapy, healing, catalyzing gifts (43:22) How do spiritual depths inform our contemporary crises? Needing to ask why we should protect nature shows a real pathological deficit (49:37) Orientation to the sacred and the meaningfulness of life forms through a deep bandwidth of connection and sensing (52:39) Learning more about the field of conceptuality can both interfere with one’s connection to the Tao and enhance it (55:39)

Topics & Time Stamps - Part 2 Does Daniel believe in God? (01:48) In Daniel’s “The Dance of the Tao and the 10,000 Things,” he asks, “Do atoms exist? Kind of! (08:23) The traps of reductionism in facing the metacrisis and how Daniel transcends them (10:49) The relation of physical crises to crises of consciousness: co-informing and co-arising facets of an integrative reality (13:11) Omni determinism, omni influence (16:31) Marvin Harris’ framework for understanding civilization: infrastructure, social structure, and superstructure (17:19) What in the interiority of human psyches, experiences & cultures are key drivers of the problems of the world? And how does our changed human genome, microbiome, and neurochemistry fit in? (19:00) We evolved to have attachments to 150 people-our tribe-so everything about bonding, attachment theory, the ideas of co-dependence & interdependence evolved in a tribal setting, in fact, we did not evolve to deal with what is going on now (21:22) The psychological generator function of the metacrisis results from perceiving the world as fragmented or made up of parts: conflict theory & mistake theory (23:34) The Realpolitik assessment of humans: we are dumb and nasty (25:54) It’s all based on a trade-off-we’re either trying to benefit ourselves now at the expense of our future selves, individually or collectively, or we just don’t realize the harm that is caused by what we do (27:26) Can we survive the current unprecedented metacrisis? No chance can we make it through without the catastrophes intensifying (30:08) The human family is not a real thing right now: there is no “we” (34:59) How to live a meaningful life? Deeply appreciate and honor the beauty of life, be in service to the beauty of reality, and deepen the capacity for both (37:33) Dharma inquiry and the vow of the bodhisattva (41:47) Where is the vow of the bodhisattva missing something? (44:09) It’s not just what is my unique calling but also what needs doing that no one else wants to do? (46:19) One beautiful peak experience is worth all the pain (50:00)

Many Thanks for posting this conversation! We need more people to understand how important it is to have engaged parents, distributive education and an integrated king’s obligation to humanity and nature. I did find it sad that David is so smart that he can’t resolve his understand of God. An affliction I’ve shared for most of my life. Turns out God’s simple, but it’s acknowledgement takes time. The good news is that he’s still young and I’m sure he will get there!

It’s so wild how at the end of this when we start discussing meaning it just goes off a cliff. The meaning of life is the dad who had a brutal upbringing and despite every selective pressure pushing him in the direction of imposing all of that baggage onto another child he instead dedicates every ounce of his spirit to fostering Daniel. How Daniel can’t see that his purpose in life is to do even better than his dad did is bizarre. There is no greater meaning then generational progress as it relates to your involvement in it. Coming from such an amazing family, that Daniel thinks that a power balanced familial upbringing isn’t the structure to take humanity forward is insane.

seeing that the metacrisis is complex and interconnected is the easy part. what we need to do is identify trigger points that could leverage the change we need through their effects on other parts of the system, which is what mandatory psychedelic therapy at high dose for political candidates could do, and that would be a prerequisite to things like challenging citizens united.

We are all hurt people, and to some degree healed people. In process, how can we best integrate the deconstruction of the old with the construction of the new in a way that generates recursive healing rather than a shitty mixture of some healing and some hurt? If I have an ice cream cone with my favorite flavors, plus a vein of feces throughout, the presence of my favorite flavors will only stand to emphasize how awful the experience of contrast is.

02:49 🎓 Daniel Schmachtenberger, a polymath, discusses his deep interest in various subjects and the interconnectedness of knowledge. 05:40 🌍 Schmachtenberger emphasizes the importance of viewing reality as sacred, leading to an intrinsic interest in understanding all aspects of it. 07:44 🔄 The Consilience Project, launched by Schmachtenberger, aims to integrate multiple perspectives on various topics for a more comprehensive understanding. 09:51 🤔 Schmachtenberger discusses the limitations of problem-solving approaches that often create second and third-order effects, advocating for a more holistic understanding. 16:53 📚 Schmachtenberger reflects on his unconventional, self-directed education, emphasizing the importance of facilitating a child's innate curiosities for deep learning. 19:02 🔄 The integrative thinking in Schmachtenberger's approach is attributed to his self-directed education, where he didn't compartmentalize knowledge. 20:54 🌐 Schmachtenberger's Big Picture integrative approach stems from a desire to appreciate the whole and optimize service to address global issues. 23:45 🧠 The decline in polymaths or "Super Geniuses" is discussed, with Schmachtenberger highlighting the role of aristocratic tutoring in fostering such intellectual breadth. 25:36 🎓 Education impact: The quality of education, especially in personalized tutoring, significantly influences a person's development, analogous to historical figures like Marcus Aurelius dedicating chapters to their tutors. 26:32 🏫 First-rate mentorship: World-class mathematicians Here are the timestamps for your convenience: 00:00:21 Introducing brilliant integrative thinker Daniel Schmachtenberger 00:02:54 Finding meaning in the sacred dimensions of our world and the integrated wholeness of reality 00:04:46 Part of love is the desire to know everything about your partner-when loving reality, everything becomes interesting 00:06:37 The fractal nature of reality, looking at it through different lenses and receiving different insights, and how the more perspectives you take, the more depth and richness you perceive 00:08:18 Is there something about the nature of the effort to solve world problems that is at fault in their getting worse? 00:10:30 Daniel’s homeschooling parents set him on the path to following what is good, meaningful, and beautiful right from the start 00:12:38 If you facilitate children’s interest, they end up deep learning in many subjects 00:15:00 Daniel’s early education included systems theory and how to make a better world 00:16:57 How did Daniel come to be such an integrative thinker? Compartmentalized education vs integrated education 00:20:54 The decline of quality aristocratic tutoring has led to the decline of super geniuses 00:28:41 Are we all the result of our education? Tutors and mentors 00:30:48 Integrating across ontology and epistemology, and asking what is the generator function of novel insight? 00:35:36 Man’s greatest purpose is to serve the family of man: women, nature, children 00:37:40 The gruesome deficit of fathering in the world and what Daniel learned about being a man from his dad 00:46:29 On forgiveness, therapy, healing, catalyzing gifts 00:54:15 How do spiritual depths inform our contemporary crises? Needing to ask why we should protect nature shows a real pathological deficit 00:58:00 Orientation to the sacred and the meaningfulness of life forms through a deep bandwidth of connection and sensing 01:01:31 Learning more about the field of conceptuality can both interfere with one’s connection to the Tao and enhance it 01:04:40 Does Daniel believe in God? 01:11:44 In Daniel’s “The Dance of the Tao and the 10,000 Things,” he asks, “Do atoms exist?" Kind of! 01:14:39 The traps of reductionism in facing the metacrisis and how Daniel transcends them 01:17:24 The relation of physical crises to crises of consciousness: co-informing and co-arising facets of an integrative reality 01:21:18 Omni determinism, omni influence 01:22:20 Marvin Harris’ framework for understanding civilization: infrastructure, social structure, and superstructure 01:24:06 What in the interiority of human psyches, experiences & cultures are key drivers of the problems of the world? And how does our changed human genome, microbiome, and neurochemistry fit in? 01:27:11 We evolved to have attachments to 150 people-our tribe-so everything about bonding, attachment theory, the ideas of co-dependence & interdependence evolved in a tribal setting, in fact, we did not evolve to deal with what is going on now 01:29:20 The psychological generator function of the metacrisis results from perceiving the world as fragmented or made up of parts: conflict theory & mistake theory 01:31:40 The Realpolitik assessment of humans: we are dumb and nasty 01:33:21 It’s all based on a trade-off-we’re either trying to benefit ourselves now at the expense of our future selves, individually or collectively, or we just don’t realize the harm that is caused by what we do 01:36:15 Can we survive the current unprecedented metacrisis? No chance can we make it through without the catastrophes intensifying 01:41:44 The human family is not a real thing right now: there is no “we” 01:44:53 How to live a meaningful life? Deeply appreciate and honor the beauty of life, be in service to the beauty of reality, and deepen the capacity for both 01:49:20 Dharma inquiry and the vow of the bodhisattva 01:51:37 Where is the vow of the bodhisattva missing something? 01:54:40 It’s not just what is my unique calling but also what needs doing that no one else wants to do? 01:58:07 One beautiful peak experience is worth all the pain

Thank you for your feedback, @caleberwin65. Unfortunately, we have no control on the frequency of ads on KZread; and as much as we wish to get rid of ads entirely, we rely only on small earnings from these ads as well as some donations from our listeners. Our podcast episodes are all open access and not limited to subscribers only, so we have no other source of funds that we can use to keep the podcast running-each of our episodes are funded mostly from the personal finances of our hosts. It is only through their belief that we are making a contribution to the world that this podcast is still running. If you wish to listen without ads, you can listen to the audio only episodes here without any ads: Part 1: deeptransformation.io/daniel-schmachtenberger-1-developing-deeper-perception-of-life/ Part 2: deeptransformation.io/daniel-schmachtenberger-2-developing-deeper-understanding-of-life/ I hope this helps, and thank you for watching!

for all of daniel's ' eruditeness' and ability to marshal thoughts into meaningful-sounding sentences, the question put to him at 1:04:40 'do you believe in God' reveals the paucity of his life philosophies after 10 minutes of million dollar word salad daniel was thanked for his 'sacred and holy answer' heres what daniel should have said, man is inherently selfish and sinful, a curse that burdens and binds us to our death, unless we accept the free offer from our loving Creator God - an offer of peace of mind on earth and eternal life thereafter in exchange for confessing our sinfulness and believing the excruciating death of sinless Jesus on the cross paid the price of our sin and bridges the gulf between sinful man and God yes, there is a God, and there's only One God, wrapped up in Three, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, turn to Him whilst there is still time
