Yooka-Laylee and Nostalgia - Part 2: The Impossible Lair | PostMesmeric

Ойындар

With the first Yooka-Laylee's polarizing reception, Playtonic Games took an unlikely route for their follow-up: a 2D, side-scrolling platformer. But perhaps this new direction wasn't as out-of-the-blue as we originally thought. Time to revisit the nostalgia-driven world of Yooka-Laylee with Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and see if Playtonic's new title is a stronger nostalgia trip than the first.

Ngl, I have very little experience and have never really had interest in Yooka Laylee, but your dedication to exploring these games is a pleasure to watch. You genuinely have me wanting to give it a try haha. Keep up the great work Alex!

Its interesting to compare Tropical Freeze and Impossible Lair because both feel like an separate evolutions of DKC. The former really emphasizes the spectacle and distinct energy of its level design, while the latter builds upon the overworld gameplay, unlockable bonus content with tonics, and more non-linear approach to progress. Different emphases, but definitely trying to build on what the 90s games had created.

Nicely done! I'm right about to record my own script for the Impossible Lair level itself, but I have to say, this is really nicely put. Doesn't mince words and shows what a transformative experience Impossible Lair was for Playtonic's confidence. All criticisms are praises are really nicely done, and you put words in my mouth I didn't know I wanted to say with the recontextualizing bits. The one thing I will somewhat disagree on, however, is calling it entirely nostalgic of the Donkey Kong Country titles and sacrificing its appeal to the Banjo-Kazooie games. I find that Impossible Lair is a more pure collectathon game than Tropical Freeze. Whilst Tropical Freeze has to settle for its harder collectibles ultimately just unlocking concept art, Impossible Lair encourages every challenge with quills to be taken due to its tonic system. Every tonic is significantly more playful than a puzzle piece could be, providing either a humorous way for a player to adjust their experience or to legitimately help them acquire power-ups or get hints to acquire more tonics. In this way, Impossible Lair creates a feedback loop that the DKC series just hasn't grasped in either of its iterations; less focused on spectacle and full level flow, and more on completing a series of mini-challenges room to room, and enduring in order to keep your bounty of quills until you reach the next checkpoint. Which, in turn, then steels the players nerves for the Impossible Lair itself. I personally find it brilliant, as it puts the lair as a carrot on a stick, and then puts smaller carrots on shorter sticks that give the runner the ability to more doggedly pursue this new carrot-stick-chimera analogy. It lets the player appreciate every inch of design and the extent of all mechanics in a way that bananas just couldn't accomplish due to their lesser hook, and feeling very similar to the note system of the original Banjo game. And I just love that. Please keep up the good work!

Surprised that you didn't mention the fact that you CAN beat the impossible lair from the word go! They even have a tonic that you unlock by doing so. You cant get it after you've endeavored into the rest of the game. Tbh, it's meant for you to master the lair first, then start a new campaign and get it, but the point stands :)

This was a very nice video on the game! Loved this game much more than the first. Still hope they make a game as good as banjo though. I have a critical analysis review of banjo tooie coming out this Friday! We could totally collab!

This video really helped clarify my thoughts about this game's aesthetic. A bunch of reviews say this game looks great, and yeah technically it does, but aesthetically it's pretty dull. There are so many reused and incongruous assets and colors. The theming is boring, which sounds like a big detriment for a game that wants the player to scour its worlds for collectables.

I think for many, the "Yooka" brand is tainted by it's first adventure failing to hit the mark. Got that ol' Kickstarter stank that many games suffer from. Partly why I think so few channels or media outlets opt to discuss this entry past the initial announcement.

2:40 that is 100 percent false. You don't have to collect anything in the DKC3. It's totally optional like DKC2. Hell DKC2 is more of a collectathon since you have to collect coins to save. 6:30 how did DKC3 neglect it's platforming? How is the hazard and enemy placement bad in DKC3? People pull out the weirdest reasons to hate on DKC3. (and DKC 1 as well because of that miyamoto qoute) 15:11 Playtonic have said they want to be unpredictable. I guess they'll make a racing game reminiscent of diddy kong racing.

You thinking that's what they'll do means it'll be something like Jungle Beat instead. :P

Thank you! I’ve very rarely heard a criticism of DKC3 that holds water. It’s not perfect, but most of the common things people say against it give the impression they haven’t played it (at least not recently). Or they’re really upset that one of the main characters is a baby.

They need to drop Yooka and Laylee. They’re offputting characters, both design wise and in the choice of lizard and bat. Basically two unlikeable creatures.

Disagree. They really sold the characters with this game, design & abilities make so much sense in the world they created.

The animal choices are great, but Yooka's design needs a major overhaul.
