I Hated Speedrunning...Then I Played Neon White | PostMesmeric

Ойындар

I could never get into speedrunning, no matter how hard I tried. But with Neon White, my eyes are now open. Let's see how this wild little game's readable, but contemplative design shows how exciting and addicting running against the clock can be, with plenty of friends and rivals along for the ride.
Special thanks for being awesome Neon White rivals:

    0:32 Oh, that's the intended method! I was convinced you had to fall down, shoot the barrels, and then stomp onto the windowsill. I'm a fool. Then again, considering how many times I've thought "there's no way this is the intended solution" and had it turn out successfully while playing Neon White, that might just be another part of its charm.

    Something else about the levels I really love is that after you beat them, a present will show up in the level. Trying to get the present makes you think about the level in a completely different way, first you have to find the present, and then figure out how to get to it, what ledge do you jump from, how do you save certain cards so you can actually make the jump etc., I find them really fun to find and a good diversion from the speed running and really shows how much thought the devs put into the level design

    And they actually help with the speedrun aspect by making you analyze the level you notice things you wouldn't have otherwise that can be used for the speedrun part. Like "wait, if I can save that godspeed maybe I could use it to skip that part of the level actually" and once you are into that analytic mindset it makes it easier to see other things like that.

    Man I'm the exact same way. I have absolutely no interest in speedrunning just for the heck of it, but if the game's mechanics are *just* right and feel amazing to play and improve at, actually improving at the game is satisfying, regardless of time. And trying to beat your friend's scores just sounds fun. Ghostrunner also had that feature but I didn't care 'cause the game didn't hold me long enough. The only game I've ever considered speedrunning is Celeste, esp with that super fun long jump you can do by dashing into the ground, and it's super easy to do as well. I'd totally like to try to beat your score in Neon White. Sounds pretty fun.

    Ghostrunner didn't really click with me either, which is odd, because a lot of people really pushed that as an entry-level speedrunning game. But Neon White felt far more approachable and kind of simpler to get into. And don't worry, I'm always up for a challenge.

    I agree, the only thing that's different for me - I don't have friends to compete against but I still enjoyed competing against the leaderboard. When you check the first page of most levels you see impossible cheated times, but you are not trying to be the best in the world - just better than most, I feel it's just like competetive modes in games, but instead of ranks you have placements. At first you get a certain placement for the most levels, but then, when you try harder, you are able to get even better times, outplay even more people. Like going from the 15k placement to 5k placement and after the run seeing that your 0.5s optimization of the run put you 10k people up the leaderboard. Seeing how just finding a new shortcut gets you higher, or how just by optimizing your already existing run you can get much better placement with less than a 0.5s improvment. So yeah, I think it's possible to enjoy competing with a leaderboard, also because usually you are playing a game just to experience it, go through it, so playing the same level multiple times breakes the pace just to get on some leaderboard you don't care about. While in this game the whole point is to optimize your time, so why not compare your results with everyone else's and see how good you did? Other than that I agree completely - great game, great speedrunning simulator (I presonaly even enjoyed the story, even though many people cringe and skip it)

    It would be more notable if a game whose design intention *wasn't* speedrunning achieved this kind of movement. Indeed, its likely why I found Doom 4 so enjoyable - and memorable. This game reminds me a lot of Seum with an anime coat.

  • @PostMesmeric

    @PostMesmeric

    I believe that having that clear design initiative, to make a speedrunning-focused game, played to the end result's benefit, but at the same time, I see what you mean. If the movement felt a bit more intrinsic, it might be more engaging to uncover those underlying elements toward mastery. I admittedly don't think this game is the Holy Grail of game movement (I can think of many games that outclass the speed, responsiveness, and fluidity of Neon White's motion mechanics), but it's the systems surrounding it that complemented the end product best. Everything came together into a cohesive whole for me, hence why I ended up committing to it so closely.

    I could really connect with this. I've always appreciated speedrunning from a distance, but never felt like I had the patience / attention to detail to actually get involved, let alone pursue it as a craft. But little things -- time trials or competing with a friend's record -- activates a similar (more manageable) rush, I think. Have seen a lot of Neon White talk lately but am glad I got to learn more about it through your video! It sounds gooood.

    @@PostMesmeric I don't really like the majority of fps games. Don't like anime or visual novels. Not really in to games with time limits or where speed is the goal. But holy fuck neon white got it's hooks in me immediately. I am still miles down the leaderboard but I have like 40 hours in and absolutely love it Excellent video as always man

    Originally, I thought the characters were just...lame. Really cheesy dialogue that felt like it was trying too hard. The game works for speed running because the game was built for speed running. Most other games don't really have speed running in mind and you have to do a bunch of glitches or boring strategy's like spam room clearing items in order to get average times. Also I liked the cringe in this game, it was just enough to enjoyable and not be overbearing. And yeah I picked up this game when I don't do speedruns myself.

  • @PostMesmeric

    @PostMesmeric

    It's clear that the devs had that in mind when making this game, though it is cool that the red medals are awarded when being even faster than the developers themselves. It shows that, even with speedrunning in mind, there are still ways to move past those barriers and be even quicker than intended. As for the dialogue, it's enjoyable, despite being so overtly goofy. It was endearing, despite the cringe.

    This game has very little to do with common Speedrunning. It's rather a racing game without cars. Very short levels, where the core mechanic is movement, and where improving times means exclusively getting better at the core skills demanded by the game. Speedrunning seems to always be for whole games and requires skills completely unrelated to the usual gameplay. Sure, Dark Souls speedruns are impressive, but glitching so I can skip whole areas, disable the AI of bosses, run past all enemies, and melt bosses with the most overpowered weapon, is not what I came to Dark Souls for. There is no logical or intuitive path to improving my time by glitching through geometry. If you liked this game, I also recommend you Cyber Hook. Retrowave aesthetic with an incredible grappling hook and time slows. Maybe also try Mirror's Edge time trials.

  • @PostMesmeric

    @PostMesmeric

    Жыл бұрын

    In a way, I kind of agree. Glitching through areas isn't quite as impressive to me as utilizing the core mechanics in more apparent ways. You're just kind of skipping steps, in a sense. Still, I do find the actual discovery of these glitches and sequence breaks to have appeal. Finding something in the game like that has novelty, mostly in understanding how games work. But that did show me just how vast the speedrunning scene can be. There are lots of ways to play, so there are many techniques to experience. I did try Mirror's Edge's time trials, but I think the core gameplay wasn't as kinetic as a faster game like Neon White. I like that quicker pace. I'll definitely check out Cyber Hook, though. I recall hearing about that game, but never tried it. Thanks!
