It's funny cause this soundtrack is so much more tame than what MG usually makes. I just can't enjoy their regular material, and though I really like this soundtrack, my favourite parts about it is the non-breakcore sections of tracks or tracks themselves, such as the indie electronica section in Solitary Grace or much of the The Burn That Cures trackset. It's clear that though weird and wacky breakcore (in the loosest sense of the word) is their forté, it shows that Machine Girl has the skill to adapt and make music that is unlike anything else they do and still make it sound so good. Now I wish they branched out to make ambient electronica lmao

Playing on Switch is nice, gyro aim is implemented really excellently.

Great video. I'm so glad that there are other freaks like me out there that recognize what the writing is doing on several layers of irony and meta commentary (post-cringe is an excellent description). I LOVE the story for all the reasons beneath the surface; the layers which are subtext left by the writers and developers but not so much in the actual lines of dialogue themselves. I could rant endlessly about this game and I probably will for at least the rest of 2022 because I haven't put this game down since launch and I am watching every video about it as I can find. I've been happy to see others recognize the writing and many like it as much as I do for similar reasons while it is too cringe for others who may not have the same tastes or just look at it from a surface level; I can definitely understand why someone wouldn't like it even if they see past the subtext but to me is *chef's kiss*. Neon White is my #1 Game of the Year for 2022 and probably my favorite game in the last several years since Doom Eternal. Somehow this game really does have DOOM vibes although it's in heaven and the shooting is far less of a focus and there isn't really gore and ultra violence. Neon White has all the fury and violence of Doom Eternal through it's speed and "breaking" the game to beat your personal best score. I get the same powerful feeling from just Acing a level as I do from blasting dozens of monsters in DOOM Eternal. It's exhilarating and the story is campy and I love it as well as all the characters. By making unbearable cliche characters that are all fairly unlikable they somehow made a cast that I care about and are distinct even if they have tropes throughout their entire creation. It's like the developer tried to take all the tropes possible and make the archetype of anime characters from the Toonami era and somehow succeeded but created a beautiful Frankenstein cast that I love the idea of as much as the wonderful illustrations.

I remember seeing this in a Nintendo direct almost a year ago and instantly I was hooked. I followed every scrap of info about this game and I'm so glad I did. Everything just clicks together to make this well oiled machine that I CAN'T STOP PLAYING.

I'm glad I decided to impulse by this game a month ago. It's been such a fun ride! Something I love about it, besides pretty much everything, is how it's difficult, but never feels unfair or rage worthy. It's a nice refresher from the 'it's either punishingly difficult, or no challenge at all' game trend.

I love the writing on this game too It feels (like the UI and ost) feels very ps2 era, and as you mentioned, suda51. Characters are endearingly cringy and overall plot is just interesting enough. And yep people wont stop shitting on it and saying to skip the story.

I'm going to be honest, I haven't played this game yet but I still keep coming back to this review because the pacing is perfect for the type of game it is and your jokes are well timed (I lost it completely at the bit about beating your friends' times while they're at work ending with 'for freaks, by freaks') and you answer basically any of the broad questions I'd have when shopping for games. mostly though for the comedy and the smooth speedy feel of the review, it does *not* feel like 15 minutes ahaha. It's been long enough since I played this kind of speedy precision platformer that I'm not sure I'm still cut out for that genre, but I still think I'll try to get my hands on it one day anyway :3

Luckily the Switch version has amazing gyro controls and slightly more lenient red medal times, and the only time it ever dips from 60fps is the intro to the final boss.

It's definitely a weird game... but in a cool way. Definitely a special one !

I gotta ask. Was you making mistakes in the script paired with the whole "speedrunning a review" theme you had? Like making mistakes in an actual run and needing to redo it? I have to know.

This game is an utter miracle. I dont like anime or jrpgs that much, I dislike first person shooters, I'm not one for visual novels, and I always thought speedrunning was kinda crap. But I do listen to a lot of breakcore, and I've always been obsessed with masks and their underlying artistic philosophy. Apparently that's all it took for me to fall head iver heels in love with every single aspect of this game! When i saw what ben said, that its a game made by freaks for freaks... It clicked. It really is such a stroke of genius, but it simply does not give a fuck wether you like it or not. It couldnt care less if its message flies over evryones heads, and that is so surprisingand comforting to see in a little indie game that came out if nowhere. Goty!

i am interested in neon white but idk, i ain't really that type of guy who likes to play speedrun games, i'll just feel bad for myself because i don't have the energy to compete for better times my main draw to this game is machine girl because i love her music (please tell me the name of the song in the intro, i can't find it :( ) and the soundtrack seems like another bop also the dialogue seems really really awful to me, like genuinely pain inducing i know you can skip the cutscenes but my dumbshit brain says to me that i will miss out on a big good story but i don't want to push through it man (10:00 and 11:12 are prime examples for comedic timing tho(but only because of the steam screenshot sound)) i really want to play this game but i feel like it will be just a huuuge let down for me also i don't think my laptop can handle this game anyways so yeah lol (i hate my shitty laptop so much but i don't have money) (btw keep up your amazing work)

I think the best part of the gift system is that you have to get a specific rank on levels in order to access gifts. It encourages players to replay levels to unlock the extra smidgens. Like needing to break the crab shell to get the meat in the center, it will take a lot of sweat and tears but hey, you got the treasure. And the game will NOT be ashamed to punish you for neglecting these extras. In the game, you get Heavenly Delight tickets for every chapter you beat. These will be traded at the Heavenly Kiosk for more free time events, all 10 unlocking a dope ass katana! And all interactions are with other characters! (((FURTHER EXPLAINATION WILL CONTAINT SPOILERS))) Buuut, if you choose to not use the tickets until like last minute, you will lose some of the charm of some events, as things have changed so much it would be weird to just act like nothing happens. Ex: you will get a prize of a beach trip with Red and Violet on the 8th ticket. If you exchange the ticket on that day, you'll be given the honor of bikini drawings of the girls (refrain yourself, soldier). BUUUT if you do it later on when Violet is now DEAD, Red will refuse to join you on the trip as it will remind her of Violet, and you'll just be sitting alone talking to yourself like a loonie. I didn't see this myself, but im sure if you saved up gifts when characters do die, all their free time dialouge will just begone and only be sidequests and memories. BUT DONT QUOTE ME ON THAT!
