Ghost Trick Critique - Occult Classic | PostMesmeric

Ойындар

It's taken a long time for me to finally dive into the Shu Takumi gem that is Ghost Trick Phantom Detective. But, after endless recommendations from friends and fans alike, I can finally experience the Ace Attorney creator's strange, but totally unique experience. Ghost Trick is a cult classic (or is it "occult classic?") Whatever. Let's discuss why.

Not sure how many others share my opinion but I think there was a charm to the sprite compression that's in the original DS version especially for how it hides the static faces the characters have. But I will say this Remaster is certainly much welcomed and I didn't expect them to go that extra mile with remastering the soundtrack.

Considering how Ghost Trick didn't sell well for Capcom, I'm still pretty surprised that they even bothered to give it a re-release. It really felt like pulling teeth to get them to even acknowledge it, even considering some minor cameos in other games.

@@PostMesmeric Well I'm spitballing here but I can only imagine they decided to give this game another shot after the success of the HD Releases of the Ace Attorney trilogy and the Great Ace Attorney. Also another factor that helps in imo is in recent years, games that were different and experimental back then are more likely to succeed nowadays due to word of said games are much more likely to get around thanks to the internet.

I still remember playing this game on my DS. Great times. But replaying it again this year feels like a dream b/c I would never thought in all my years that we would get a remaster for modern systems. Game's still a banger with its well defined animations, banging soundtracks, and storyline that has me gripped from beginning to end. Plus, Missile is best boi of the millennium!

I'm still surprised that Capcom gave this game such a polished remaster. It's a bit bare-bones on new content, but it feels incredibly fun to play on PC especially. And yeah, can't deny Missile. What an all-star.

I remember playing this back in 2011 during its initial launch on DS, at first i didnt get it because it felt limited, but the more i played it the more it fell into place and then as i beat chapter 4, the aha! moment hit and the game itself was a blast from there on. One of Capcom’s underrated gems during this era and im glad more people will have a chance to give it a shot and maybe Capcom could give it another shot

My brother got this game for the ds, and I was able to play it when I was younger. Since then it has been my favorite game for all the reasons you mentioned, from the characters to the beautiful way in which the story is slowly unraveled

I love how you describe the puzzles as resembling platforming challenges. I hadn't gotten a chance to play the game way back when, but this was a wonderful deep dive and that description got me particularly intrigued. It helps that it's got exactly the kind of storyline I love! (Also, agree with the other comments: That is an A+ title, haha)

I think this video has finally got me to see what everyone else sees in Ghost Trick. I played it for the first time a year ago, and personally found its puzzles generally both frustrating in timing, but too simple in construction. But if they're supposed to feel fulfilling to see all complete, I can see why no one else has a problem with them. Likewise, I found the story to be directly at odds with Ghost Trick's comical nature and cartoonish characters. The ending felt unsatisfying to me personally, and again seemed to undermine its themes. But it seems like to most people, seeing all of the various narrative threads and characters intersect in unexpected ways is the story's strength. It's strange to feel like you're the only one who dislikes something, but at least I have a better frame of reference for Ghost Trick now.

I played this game for the first time about 6 or so years ago and was blown away by the experience. The colorful visuals, excellent soundtrack, clever puzzles and wonderful story resulted in one of the tightest gaming experiences I'd ever had. It's good to see even playing it now for the first time, more than a decade after its release, you were able to clearly see the game's merit.

I played through Ghost Trick with a walkthrough, and I don't regret it one bit. As early as the second chapter I was banging my head against the wall not because I didn't know the solution, but because what I thought was the solution was something that I thought you had to time with almost perfect precision. After a solid fifteen minutes I went to see what it was I was missing, and then learning it was something else entirely completely robbed me of any motivation outside of actually seeing the story through to the end. It's a damn good story, but not unlike AI: The Somnium Files, it's one where I feel it excels in spite of the gameplay rather than being helped along by it. Also I still haven't forgiven this game for having a stealth mission combined with an escort mission.

  • @PostMesmeric

The stealth/escort mission is easily the most frustrating part of the whole game. Definitely stuck out like a sore thumb, despite its importance to the story. Not sure where the dev team was going with it, because that was also a case where I was overthinking things to the point of missing a more obvious solution.

Of all the things going on in games in 2023, people being able to (re)discover Ghost Trick is the best. I haven't even approached the this new release yet, but just knowing it's out there again makes me feel all warm and cozy etc. Such a classic.
