What I never understood is how the hell did Yngwie train his mind to memorize all of the notes. Good muscle memory is absolutely top class. This is coming from a guitarist of 16 years.

He doesn't memorize anything, he's improvising. Except for a few main motifs this version is quite different from the studio version. And he understands basic principles of music theory.

@@EricCPOP Which is where the genius lies. I've seen him play this 5 times solo, plus once at Generation Axe with Steve Vai, plus the studio version. Never even close to the same twice. It's like a constant evolution. What has always amazed me about Yngwie is the intricacy. There's no shred. Every note is 100% deliberate. It's pretty amazing. I've known about him and listened since Odyssey came out in 88 or 89 (aging myself). If you have the means, slow him down and you can hear the deliberateness in every in every single touch of the strings.

He said himself that the main melody are the same as the record. But other from that every live performance is never the same because of improv solos. But they always fit in with the main melody so it never sounds off in anyway. Every live performance I've heard so far would work on a record.

The most amazing thing about his songs is that they're 99.9% WRITTEN and played as they're written... unlike some solos where you just take arpeggio shapes and licks from top of your heard, he shreds every note as it was written by him... that's the amazing thing.

It was Eddie van Halen, Steve Vai, Randy Rhoads, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen. I am still an Yngwie, Eddie and Vai fan! A revolving door really. I was 14 when his first record came out and at that time his facility was jaw dropping.

Satriani brought instrumental guitar to the masses with radio success. Steve Vai brought complete mastery of the instrument. Even Tom Morello, love him or hate him, brought a completely new approach to leads. Hendrix is the forefather of all these guys and deserves inclusion, as does Beck for his unique mastery.

In his prime this man was unreal and untouchable. His name and presence commanded a near godlike respect. I don't blame him for the ego and self destruction. 99% of us would've done the same if not worse if we had his talent. People can match early Yngwei's speed but I'm yet to see someone match his vibrato and feel.

This is basically his music. When he's part of another band there are lyrics and structure, mostly forced on him by other people. When he writes his own stuff he just writes a crazy guitar solo and then records bass tracks behind it. His two main influences are Jimi Hendrix (where he gets the playing with his teeth and behind his back) and classical violinist Niccolo Paganini (where he gets the wild arpeggios). This is the technical level that practicing 8 hours per day for decades will get you.

You are looking at the guy who change guitar for Heavy bands in the '80s. He is the one who put shredding on the map at just 18yrs. old. Every Heavy band to this day shreds and can thank Yngwie for it all. Eddie Van Halen introduced tricks and tapping to the world in 1978 but many of the so called hair bands copied him to some extent but Yngwie inspired the progressive bands like Helloween and Marty Friedman before he joined Megedeth and brought that style to them during their glory days.

Yngwie Malmsteen is from Sweden originally. His main influences are Bach, Paganini and Jimmy Hendrix. He emerged on the scene as a member of Steeler, Alcatraz and then as a solo artist in the Eighties. He is a virtuoso and a living legend. You should listen to his first several albums. Trilogy and Odyssey contain some of his best songwriting. BTW, the guy is 6' 3" so he's no little guitar punk. Big in stature as he is in legend.
