If you've been listening since the 80's like I have you know who he is. After 80's metal took the hit in the 90's a lot of the great guitarist ceased being heard from, and since he's from a younger generation he has NO idea who Yngwie is. I'm just happy he's widened his musical tastes to older stuff.

First, Thank You. Yes, he is still around. He jumped on the scene in 1985 with the cover of Guitar Player Mag. (where I found him). Rising Force, Yngwies first solo album, where Black Star was recorded, is one of the best neo-classical metal albums of all time and set the standard. Yngwie came from Sweeden to the states with a band called Steeler and then Alcatrazz. (Ironically replaced in Alcatrazz with Steve Via). He has primarily toured as a solo act but has also played with the likes of Steve Vai and Zakk Wylde in Generation Axe in the mid-2010s. One note, Yngwie plays with a scalloped fretboard. One of the only players out there that come to memory to do so. Scalloped frets are when you create a divot between the fret bars so that when you play a note, the string only touches the metal on metal. He also uses the tallest frets you can. This gives him a lot of his unique clarity and tone. More Ynqwie, kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6Kdm7OuZ5m7qaQ.html (Far Beyond the Sun w/Japanese philharmonic orchestra) I told you that he was good. Your next assignment. Zakk Wylde was the lead guitar player for Ozzy and with his own band Black Lable Society. Zakk Wylde w/Les Paul Trio kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWWDqbOKm5iuoLA.html Voodoo Child FYI I am going to bug you for these two as well, so you should give in. I have a lot of guitar work to lead you to.

I remember the first time I met him; this was before surfing, and to look at the guy, I thought he was a grateful deadhead. The first thing he played was "Over the Mountain," and my eyes popped out of my head. The biggest regret of my life was not sticking with it. I still play every day, but little did I know I had the same teacher as Kirk Hammett and Steve Vai. BTW went to SFSU with Kirk, and did not have any classes, but I was an engineering student when he was getting his degree. Saw him on campus a few times.

After the concert He asked me onto his bus and gave me a autographed picture and a pick signed to me. I was an Ironworker and stranded in Boston when my van broke down and gave the autographed picture to a fellow Ironworker to hold on for me. I lost contact with my friend and Yngwie's signed autographed. Yngwie was no doubt the best guitarist I've ever seen. Truly Great !

I'm sure that many others have made comments answering your questions so I will only say this. He came of age in the early 80s. I discovered him first time at a live show in NYC in the mid 80s. I was a kid that grew up on Led Zeppelin being my favorite band, thus Jimmy Page being my favorite guitarist ... replaced by EVH in the late 70s... Once I saw Yngwie LIVE ... NOBODY has ever pushed him off my mantle... and I've seen and heard many awesome guitarists. That being said... he still plays LIVE and still records ... You have to go check out his catalog and then for heaven's sake. Go see him live. Over 40 years of shredding and kicking ass.

Next try this: Al di Meola, Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin - Mediterranean Sundance from the album Friday Night in San Fransisco. The live I mean is from 1981. Picture quality is horrible... but you'll get the drift.

My favorite song by him is Crystal Ball. But if you think Malsteen is getting overly friendly with that guitar, you should check out Tender Surrender by Steve Vai, that guitar gets violated.

As far as growing up in my teens in the 80s, listening to Yngwie Malmsteen, I've always heard his [first name] pronounced... sounds like " In-vee and/or In-vay" Malm-steen.

Those reactions suggest, that you are not only seeing Yngwie for the first time, instead you even seem to watch a rock show for the first time.
