I never thought that he was arrogant or cocky, he just knew who he was and knew what he wanted. He managed his whole career his way! I’ve always said that you don’t get anywhere being shy! Yngwie created a guitar movement like no other.🍻

This comment makes me happy. I grew up in the time where we were all studying the guitarists of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and at that time, you either learned about the "who" of these musicians from word of mouth, records, instructors, or the press. This was before the internet, but the music magazines were outlets of record label promotion. So much of rivalries, arrogance, personas, were all completely invented or presented out of context. You listen to Yngwie in pretty much any interview and in the early days he had whatever confidence it took to get where he was and stay there. And, in that he struggled with the vices that hit young people and fame. He grew out of that, got clean, and is still Yngwie today. But, there is an underlying humbleness in the confidence that has always been there. I'm just glad I was able to see past the hype and dig back in to learn more about who he was, and is. The quality of person is there, making that much more fun to listen to him peel faces with his brilliance.

A lot of people give him grief, and mention other guitarists, but in 1984, this was INSANE!. I blew everyone away, when I put it on. 😂

Bro, you GOTTA see him live. I've been a fan for 30+ years but only saw him live for the first time back in December. Unbelievable energy and intensity. I have never been so pumped at a show. Just face-melting intensity. Get a spot right up front and enjoy!

Respect to you, Wilburn, love your being open-minded to listen to Yngwie and your reaction to his brilliance, it was fun seeing that!...:) I've been fortunate to have seen him twice in Indianapolis. It's also pretty cool that he replied to your post down below, awesome!

I saw him on Long Island at a small club in Wantagh about 10 years ago. Great show.

Seen him several times when I lived in south Florida and never disappoints . He is a master at what he does , always cool 4o see him driving around in his Ferrari , a master craftsman , YNGWIE ROCKS!

Back in the mid 80's, WBCN in Boston had a late night show called Heavy Metal from Hell. On one of those shows they announced an upcoming Yngwie Malmsteen show at one of the clubs in Boston. 30 minutes later they announced the cancellation of that show. The reason: The clubs ceiling was too low and Yngwie couldn't throw his guitar around. Shortest concert announcement in history.

Oh boy, ing vay! I remember many years ago when I was a much younger lady listening to this guitar god. I was really into his music so much so that I often blasted this song out whilst erm making great love to my partner at the time. Admittedly, some guys lived the rhythm whilst others legged it fast out of this tigers den! Oh the memories of many great times 🥰

I played his music At a young age Growing up then finally got to meet him after a show In Everett Washington Seattle we drank together At a private bar behind the stage and talked about musicianship then some guy was trying to pick a fight with him out of jealousy i wasnt having it because i reflected at that moment on breaking my back in car accident and spending many years in bed playing guitar to his songs i stepped in and shutt that guy down because malmsteens songs had got me through many hard years but got a chance to stick up for my hero He's just a total genius He lacks some social skills but that's what happens when you spend all your life playing guitar Solitude But he was very gracious with me Some people don't understand the sacrifice it takes to get that good you have to lock yourself away for many years malmsteen sees music floating in the air his life has been a sacrifice to 🎶 music

A joy to watch, brilliant ... sometimes you want to count the fingers just to make sure he's human.

Black Star actually starts at 4:48. The previous material was a medley and some noodling.

Saw him live at a concert in a small venue in Dallas back in his early years ... we were within a few feet of the stage and it was that good.

Saw him in Albuquerque in November and will see him again in May in Denver. He’s a big show man Viking!

I can listen to Yngwie playing classical guitar all day.

A funny story that he may remember , I live not far from the Hallandale Beach Guitar center , I seen a used stratocaster 76 or 78 I think that was in the back of the store near the acoustic room. I want home thinking , I must have my first one, I'm going to get it. I returned a few days later only to find that it was sold. Guess who bought it? Yep, Yngwie , after hearing that, I wasn't bummed , I just said, we have the same taste.

The crazy thing is that, on the album it's at the highest level, but when he plays live he plays an extended version, an even more difficult version live, than in the studio. Everybody else would do the opposite. The undefeated Boss, indeed. Since the 80's. And when he learned and composed, there was no internet or modern tools Even his instrument is an old-school Fender Strat, w bolt on neck, not the sleek more user friendly modern guitars, of today.

With all the bad things that have been said about Yngwie and are in part correct, he is a tremendous beast musician and a gift to the world. Enjoyed it very much!

I saw him open for DIO on his sacred hearts tour back in 1980 something. At the Mississippi gulf coast coliseum in Biloxi.

I love Malmsteen and play some of his stuff on my guitar. A guy a level above Malmsteen is Bernth from Austria (the Mozart of guitarists).

May want to look into Alan Holdsworth's inventory . Yomandhu Costa (Brazilian) guitarist has carved out a niche that just may adjust anyone's short list .

When You're the best, it's hard to be humble. Y.M. was my favorite since the 80's🤔 Only two of us in high school in 1987 knew who he was. Glad this video was in my suggested pop up. Been a weird year & glad to take this time machine video back to a simple time in the 80's☺

I was in a bar in Korea when I first heard Black Star. Rainbow had disbanded by this time. And I at first thought that this was a new creation of Ritchie Blackmore. Of course, I was mistaken but not far off the mark. He picked up the neo-classical baton while Blackmore was putting it down to play his folk music. I love Vai, Satriani, EVH, and other virtuosos with the guitar. They may have different styles to a degree. But none of these or others are better, just merely as good. I'm sorry for the people that knock Yngwie because they are purely lost in envy. I wish you could appreciate him. Thank you Chod for recognizing the passion and talent Yngwie displays every time he touches his Strat.

I saw him and Buckethead play at a free festival in Golden Gate park in the early 90's I was not quite sure what I was looking at. But I knew it was special.

I have a great one to listen to by Yngwie called Spanish Castle Magic. It's a real banger and the vocalist is incredible.

Have seen him before myself, Chod. He is well worth seeing. Next time go, buddy.....wink.

Have you ever noticed the fretboard on his strat. It has a scallpoed fretboard. I think it is amazing he does what he does on a neck with the wood scooped out between the frets.... only him and Richie Blackmore use the scalloped fretboards as far as I know. Have never seen anyone else use them . Blackmore was scalloping his own strats way back in the 70's from what I understand too. So he was the only one using them back then.

There's a lot of the shredder style guitar players that scallop their fretboards. Usually it's just like the five highest ones but yngwie scallops most of if not all of his fretboard. It is somewhat rare but not completely unheard of, even some metal guys are doing it. Karl Sanders from the band Nile has a very heavily scalloped oversized custom v on on the annihilation of the wicked album. Pretty sure he's used it on other albums but that was when he got it.

scalloped fretboards make this /easier/ not harder. you see it almost always in people who play like yngwie because it facilitates cleaner scales at speed, not because only they're capable of handling it lol.

yngwie was one of the first pioneer the particular brand of shred guitar that made him so famous, but there are a lot of big names, and even some smaller ones, that walked or are walking similar paths with achievements every bit as high level in terms of technicality. vai is out there obviously, guthrie govan, petrucci, some rate roth, etc. hell, devin townsend /can/ play like this (he just hates it lol.) tbh yngwie's love affair with absurdly fast scales makes him kinda boring to me these days. of course i was raised immersed in shred guitar my whole life, my dad himself plays at a very high level and it's pm the only thing he listens to lol. so listening to yngwie speed racer up and down his scalloped fretboard got a little old after 20 years

Malmsteen was amazing for the first few years he appeared on the scene. I remember dropping the needle on Black Star for the first time when it first came out in 1984. Randy Rhoads was my favorite guitarist but Yngwie was quite impressive. The problem with Yngwie for me, as the years went on, there was no real growth. It just became more heavy and less memorable. Yngwie is one of the best, but in my opinion, he squandered a large part of his career.
