3:18-3:40 is such a beautiful progression. The solo melody behind it is also epic.

About the criticism he gets: Playing with soul has nothing to do with how fast or slow you play, how linear or "melodic" you play your scales. It simply means making the guitar sound like it's alive, can you feel the passion of the player through the sound. And in my opinion Yngwie is the best at this. I've listened to hundreds of guitar players over the years and I've never heard as passionate (soulful) player as Yngwie.

I'd have to say, in some parts of black sun, his speed doesn't add to the feel of the song... If you know what I mean. Have a listen and find parts where he didn't have to do a dozen notes within seconds ... Some parts of the song it sounds like a God wrote the music, in other parts it is just unnecessary... But that's Yngwie and it's his deal and at the end of the day it doesn't really matter too much.

@@DoubtingThomas333 I agree. I'm not saying he's musically the most gifted or thoughtful. He plays often very inappropriately. I'm talking purely about his guitar playing ability and not about composing. He also improvises almost everything so you are guaranteed to have low moments. But for me those low moments doesn't take away from the high moments and I rather listen to someone who play poorly at times but then has amazing peak moments than someone who plays steadily good but never has jaw dropping moments.

@Climate Fails Probably not, I couldn't even watch it, it was sad indeed. I don't listen to newer Yngwie really. It just starts to get increasingly bad after 90s imo.

Try to remember that he uses a scalloped neck and 6 strings mounted higher than most so he's playing more on the strings without using frets, now thats genius and he makes the beast talk so passionately down to its growl. Malmsteen was my idol in the 80s and im now 60 and still feel all his power, idream one day that the boss will spend a day with me before I kick the bucket!

@@GetSidewaysReacts ironically it wasnt the guitar playing it was him burning his guitar lol. He saw the fire and was like hey i wanna do that. Guess i should learn it first. He learned all of deep purples stuff by i think like 10 and then he found BACH because of his mom. He then basically became the yngwie everyone knows by age 16 and was like famous in his hometown im pretty sure. One day he won the shred contest for shrapnel records with mike varney and the rest is basically history. at 20 he was doing world tours lol Im a huge yngwie fan thought id let my knowledge be useful

That’s the challenge with ranking guitar players from different eras. Music and guitar technical skill advanced over the years until it reached its pinnacle in the 1980s with great players like EVH, R Rhoads, Malmsteen, G Lynch, J Becker, and P Gilbert. Jimmy H was great in his day but music was much more primitive in those days. Musically there just is no comparison. By the way, it’s really not that hard to play a basic music melody on guitar with your teeth.

@@epic103 You're partially right. He was incredibly influential and still is. Though you can't really say who wrote the more memorable tunes.
