As a HUGE fan of the original, part of me wishes the remake was made just to compare the two versions, but I'm also glad it was cancelled. Yellow Submarine was such a product of its time--in the late '60s everyone still believed peace, love, and rock and roll would save the world. Don't know how relevant that message would be nowadays.

Don't think about it too much Tris, (cool name BTW) because to give it relevance the Blue Meanies would prevail, and a new character, "Hope" would end up in the ICU. What happens to The Beatles is what actually happened, and when you left the theater and looked at the state of the world, you'd realize that the movie was a musical comedy.

The most significant thing about the 1968 production of Yellow Submarine, I think, is the style of the art, which is peculiar and very specific to a narrow timeframe. The movie is an aesthetic time-capsule of 1968 hippiedom, right at the cusp of everything beginning to turn ugly.

Even now some of the animation is brilliant, there's some really funny pieces in it, you've got classic Beatles songs throughout and the four Beatles make an appearance at the end. I don't think it's the kind of film you can remake. It's very much a late 1960s psychedelic animated movie with brilliant song's. All Together Now.

I'm going to be the one to say it. I'm absolutely ecstatic this never happened. This was a terrible idea on every level, especially using Zemeckis's horrid Mo-Cap system that only ever looked good on Monster House. The Blue Meanies are absolutely disturbing looking, dressed like S&M fetishists. Not everything needs to be remade, especially something that was very much a product of the 60's and is an excellent time capsule of Beatlemania before the band ended. It's one of the greatest animated movies of all time, if only for the amazing acid trip animation, and a CGI Mo-Cap version, original story or otherwise, would lack the same punch in every way.

I got to audition for this remake in November 2009, for Burrows Boland Casting, oddly East Coast auditions held at my friend Charles Rosenay's Beatles Festival in CT. Charles had contacted me, as I'd done a solo show smoothly morphing between an impression of each Beatle ("johnpaulgeorgeringo", Outstanding Solo Show in The 2008 NY Int'l. Fringe Festival). It was an open casting call, and I ran into a bunch of Beatle tribute act friends there from all over the globe, (one such pal was in fact cast as some form of John Lennon--voice, I think). We all met up afterwards for lunch, and later on drinks where the casting folks hung out with us, regaling us with stories about Hollywood casting, Johnny Depp & Tom Cruise, and such. What great memories!

This video was decent and had more depth than most YS Remake documentaries but I feel it's still missing some important details about the search which were seemingly glossed over. While Kitsu is instrumental to the process of the search, and founding YS3D, he didn't actually find any footage. Lost Media Monsters was mentioned in the video but they practically did nothing besides publicizing. Crediting all the folks who found the concept art would take too long but I'll credit those who found the footage. 8:25 Blue Meanie test #1, found by cartoondude413 in 2013. 5:28 George Harrison motion capture test, found by mynameiskhannie in 2014. 9:09 Beatles Sgt Pepper Reprise test footage, found by Maximo in April 2021. 8:23 Blue Meanie test #2, found by naturalkatsap in April 2021. 8:58 Yellow Submarine storyboards, found by Mr. Kite in April 2021. 8:07 "There's only one way to go out" reels. I know this film may just seem like a strange niche to some people, nightmare fuel to others, but to me it means everything. I’m an early-2000s kid born to 60s-raised parents. Growing up there were a small handful of movies that I asked to be played over and over and over again, 10-20 times a year, no matter the time of year. These included Monster House, Polar Express, the whole Image Movers armada, but my all-time favourite was always Yellow Submarine. In the end, this film feels like it was meant to be made for me, it would have blown my mind to Venus if it came out when it was meant to. Wherever the future leads, I will do everything in my power, however much power I may have, to make this project resurface. It’s my duty.

I'm personally glad that they didn't, the new version would have been neutered in a way that the original wasn't. Plus, by 2012 half the Beatles had already died, meaning that if they opted to do a cameo near the end like the original, that wouldn't really have been the same. Having rewatched the movie as an adult, it was rather shocking just how much innuendo and referncing was going on that I had no idea about. Plus, more recent editions have been remastered to bring back the vibrant colors that were always supposed to be there. The version I saw on TV as a kid had rather muted colors.

It would've been nice to see on some level, but I'm very glad that Yellow Submarine is still one of the few movies that has been reduced to lackluster CGI. There's a strange stigma that a lot of Hollywood feels towards 2D animation. It feels like they'd rather keep doubling down on CGI to push this "futuristic" type feel, but it rarely ever looks half as good as 2D animation & it's always at least double the time and cost of CGI. I’m down for a Yellow Submarine remake, the 60’s film is great but a bit dated. Plus with new Beatles interest with Get Back, I’ve seen more people becoming fans and rediscovering the Beatles. However, motion capture would’ve been the absolute WORST way to do this film. The dark and gritty realistic approach with the uncanny valley looking humans and creatures would’ve been a nightmare. It’s the totally wrong look and tone for a vibrant psychedelic light hearted film, it would’ve been the visual embodiment of a bad LSD trip. Another thing this movie had against it was the motion capture characters are based on real people who were incredibly well known and there was no way to make the Beatles look convincing or not creepy with motion capture. I could totally see a Yellow Submarine remake in a more experimental style, something like Spiderverse could be incredible or even Disney or Pixar could give it a shot. I’m so glad it got cancelled, it definitely wouldn’t have worked, not in that state at least!

i wonder if there is some uncanny valley with the way the Beatles look as 3D version of themselves, some of them are ok but not all.

I heaved a heavy sigh of relief when I found this video. CANCELLED!!! Wonderful!!! When I first heard about this project I prayed for it go away and never be hears from again. It was Yellow Submarine that introduced me to the band in the early 70's and bought the soundtrack shortly thereafter, enjoying the strange George Martin instrumental side just as much as the songs. When I saw it the Hey Bulldog sequence was still missing but I loved the song, remaining among my favourites. The idea of an updated film, whether a direct remake or not was a nauseating thought. I hadn't heard any news in years and hoped that it was abandoned. This video confirmed this hope. From the footage and stills it looks like any of the other bland animation films being made nowadays. It looks absolutely terrible. Give me that old school animation style any day, flaws and all. Hopefully the footage will never see the light of day and perhaps inspire someone else to pick up the project. Just release the original film. I'd love to see it in an IMAX format if possible.

Makes me a little sad to see people happy that this never got made, even if I kinda agree. Yellow Submarine was a childhood favorite of mine, and yeah, it really doesn't need a remake of any kind, least of all one with mocap. That being said, I do kinda love the absolutely bizarre concept art and renders of the inside of submarine and the sea of monsters. I love how massive the submarine looks, with all its dream-like, unexplainable mechanisms. Reminds me a bit of the short film Elephant Dream. Even the Beatles themselves have some pretty stylish designs, though the mocap animation is weird. Jeremy's redesign is about the only truly offensive redesign in my view. Who shaved him and *why would you do that*? Would I want this movie to be completed? Not especially. Do I want what was made to stay lost? No, not at all, I think it's great that we have what we have. Fascinating little look into what could have been.

@@flamingpi2245 That's a very good point that I hadn't thought of. Fuzz does take time to render if you want it to appear realistic, so that makes some sense. Though it doesn't explain the jacket and, uh, outie. I guess we'll never know unless someone clarifies, I suppose.

No, no it wouldn’t. Leave the original only - it has a charm that reflects the time in which it was made. Modern technology would only ruin the concept of Yellow Submarine. Look at how Star Wars was ruined by the CGI ‘updates’……..some things are best left alone.
