Oh. Oh no. Oh what is this?? I've seen a lot of cancelled productions in my time. But seeing this is so... so.. CURSED! The Beatles had a psychedelic werid cartoon movie way back in 1968 called Yellow Submarine. And in 2010, award-winning director Robert Zemeckis was invested in making a 3D CG remake of the film. Sounds nice. The only is, his animation studio, ImageMovers Digital, was just terribly terribly creepy. You all know Polar Express, or Monster House, or A Christmas Carol. So let's dive into this cursed alternate timeline of how Disney almost made this animated Beatles nightmare fuel...

Fun fact: According to the book "The 50 Greatest Movies Never Made" by Chris Gore, a sequel called "Strawberry Fields Forever" was being worked on at one point. It was to be the first computer-generated movie ever, utilizing many songs from The Beatles. Ten minutes of test footage was shot, and has never been seen.

But from what I've read, it seems like a detective story that just slapped on Beatle character names and shoehorned in songs--like the infamous Sgt. Pepper movie, which, for example, named a character "Strawberry Fields" so they could have an excuse to sing the song. It didn't seem particularly Beatle-ish at all.

I feel like this movie wouldn’t have worked in 3D. The art style of the original film often completely threw out traditional depth and perspective, and you just can’t achieve that in 3d without giving your artists and viewers headaches.

As a huge Beatles fan I wanted this movie and also didn't want this movie to happen. Wanted it because of its visuals and the fact that it could reintroduce The Beatles to a younger audience. But also don't want it because the original was just as perfect as it could be as well as transitioning a 2 D animated film from the 60's to 2010's 3D would just result in the nightmare fuel you saw, which would probably tarnish The Beatles reputation. The original is a classic that was made by just 40 to 50 people in under 11 months, this would've just been seen as a cash grab with creepy (but also amazing) visuals.

Some of the visuals look really interesting. I think I'd like to have seen what they did with the songs. But TBH, I kind of wonder what the point of this was. I love Yellow Submarine, it's one of my favourite films, but it was ultimately a cash-in on the Beatles' popularity with some trippy visuals and silly gags to link the songs together. 'Only A Northern Song' is literally a song about how burnt out George Harrison was feeling and how screwed over by the publishers he felt.

What would have worked much better for a remake of The Yellow Submarine would have been to employ the animator who did the intro for "Beatles Rock Band". Same guy who did the animation for the Gorillaz, I think. It was a great combination of 2D and 3D stylings that would have fit the imaginative themes of the movie without the too-literal designs that Zemeckis wanted to use.

That’s the biiiiiiiig problem with motion capture. Every model needs to be based off a human. Blue meanies are NOT human! Jeremy is NOT human! 90% of the visuals do not include humans! No motion capture could capture the beauty and magic of the original. Not saying cg couldn’t be used and that the concept couldn’t be done using different mediums, but motion capture just feels cheap with how many talented passionate animators there are now who really could bring the Beatles to life in new breathtaking ways.

When I heard this movie got cancelled, I remember feeling relief. The original drawing style is what made the classic so unique, and I didn't think creating it in 3D would ever do it justice. Judging by the concept art, I wasn't wrong. I think filmmakers today would be better off making movies based on "Yellow Submarine" rather than remaking the film itself.

That they made Jeremy boob an actual boob complete with a nipple for a navel shows how screwed up these people were. There was no way this would have done anything but tanked, and hopefully taking the studio and animators with it, for the good of mankind. What? I remake of Incredible Mr Limpet? WHY??? 0_0 Why do we need that? I don't think that movie needs a remake, the original is very good (this is coming form someone who doesn't like old movies) and it was very creative too, but I do think that for today's audience some of the explosions might be a bit scary for some younger kids. I watched it on tv for the first time as a teen (on one of those classic movie channels my dad likes, he was watching it and then i wanted to watch it too because I liked the animation) but I can't speak for the majority of kids. I'm that person who grew up watching cutesy baby stuff like Shaun the sheep/wallace and gromit and Little Bear, with no explosions and hardly no violence (the most they ever did in shaun the sheep was throw an apple or something at another character). When I watched the Lion King for the first time as a teen, I was surprised how so many kids enjoyed it when they were young because I thought some scenes were too intense for the little ones. Maybe some kids would watch the remake and some watch the original, however, I don't think they need a remake of Incredible Mr Limpet anyway. The original's fine but know your audience. If you're watching it with kids, you could just watch the original and skip the explosions/unsettling parts. I wouldn't play that movie for a classroom full of little kids, 5-8, but for like high school kids if no one had bad trauma or anything, I'd play the movie

Oh man,, my boyfriend and I would've loved to see this. :( We already adore the original Yellow Submarine already, I can't even count how many times we've rewatched it already. Maybe a CG film would finally redirect some people to be in The Beatle fandom like what happened with Queen. We're just starved for conversation since we're like zoomer Beatle fanboys living off the same content for years and that horrible Yesterday movie. :,)

But the Blue Meanies stuff and Jeremy Hillary Boob were genuinely nightmarish The only design that wasn't was that concept art of Chief Blue Meanie's head with the different goggles, mainly because that was really the only faithful design for him.

You know how most little kids have a phase where they watch one movie a million times every single day for months on end? The Yellow Submarine was my first (there were a few for me, and that's probably why I'm a film buff now lol). It has enormous sentimental value for me, so I feel like this remake to me would've been as terrifying and fascinating as fire was to the first caveman to discover it. I like to think I would've liked it, though maybe not for the reasons I love the original :)

Honestly I'd love a hand drawn, beautiful remake or sequel to Yellow Submarine. Or perhaps a animated series of music video segments made into a film centered around one single album like Alan Parker's Pink Floyd The Wall film.

This film could've been something great. *It really could have.* Yes, there were SO many flaws with mostly some of the characters' designs, but if they had just made the Blue Meanies and Jeremy look how they looked in the '68 film, this could've been even more exciting to see in theaters. The designers REALLY did them dirty (especially Jeremy). However, the storyboards, environments, test animations, and the Beatles themselves, in my opinion, looked amazing! Also, David Tennant as Chief Blue Meanie would've honestly be the best (he's my favorite character).
