I am still salty with netflix for canceling the show, it was my favorite show on the platform. I know it wasn't as succesful as it could've been, but they really should have give it at least a chance of two seasons with heavier marketing. It didn't have a chance to grow an audience, I mean it took me some months to watch it and I loved it. It was critically acclaimed and no doubt a lot of new people would have joined for the second season hearing that this highly rated show was getting more episodes. Besides... a lot of money was already invested in making all of the puppets, props and sets. I highly recommend watching the docummentary on the making on the show just to get your mind blown with the incredible amount of work that it took.

@@GafftheHorse Yes I agree... I mean by the time I got to the show, the trial period had already passed for it to be cancelled, which was revealed to be just a couple of months. By the time it got all the recognitions and accolades that promoted the show, it was already cancelled. I mean really ok... let us say that they do want to cancel it no matter what, I still think they should have had a second season just to use all the money they invested and to wrap up the story with some notice from netflix, maybe even with a reduced budget or with fewer episodes. Now netflix is struggling to keep subscribers because they lack meaningful content. I really really hope they bring it back, or that the jim henson company secures funding from some other place to finish up the story. Get it off from netflix if they need to, this is the only tv show where i would honestly just buy the blurays if it is not available on netflix.

It has been a problem for decades now, that shows get cancelled before they find their footing - yes, the stations want to make money and all, but I think pre 95 there was a lot more leway. And with streaming it only got worse, cancelling shows before a season is complete.

The Italian dub actually has the Skeksis shout "Haakskeekah", yet the rest of the dialogue is in Italian. It's almost as if the dub artists wanted to pay tribute to the original version. EDIT: Yet more clues. The Italian dub has skekSil say to Jen that the prophecy was what caused "Gelfling slaughter", a line taken directly from the workprint rather than the theatrical cut, where it was sanitised to "all this trouble". Furthermore, when skekOk sees the Mystics march into the castle, he shrieks "Oh no, not urZah!", a name that's never heard in the theatrical cut.

You think they somehow got a cut where they didn't remove that line? @@ginogatash4030 I think what happened was that there was a genuine desire to honour the workprint version, because the "haakskeekah" you hear is from the Italian voice actors, not an undubbed line. Also, when the Chamberlain talks to Kira and Jen at the Gelfling ruins, he straight up says "Prophecy caused gelfling slaughter", a line translated directly from the original workprint. In the English theatrical cut, he says the much less harsh "Prophecy caused all this trouble".

What I loved about this film(Dark Crystal being my 3rd fav franchise out of 10) is one of the few dark aspects you can have with fantasy. It came at a time when not even thing that was considered adult or conventional for all audiences to watch didn't hinder a runaway imagination, this movie didn't require celebrities voice talents, annoying side kicks, or songs written to be implanted in your mind 24/7. Dark Crystal literally and visually take you to "Another world, another time, in the age wonder" An analogy to the late 70s to 2000s when fantasy and art could be taking and enjoyed not forced to be best of the year like todays media. Childrens entertainment at the time didn't focus on censoring rather experiencing.

I can remember seeing a video copy when we still had movie rental buildings, but didn't rent it because it showed mainly the Skeksis, so my first introduction to the story as a child was a picture book that displayed Jen and Kira, falling in love with it because the 'fairies' were different than the Tinker Bell motifs. Still have the book to this day! Then, I rediscover the original movie on Netflix. Fell in love with it the first minute, and I wondered why I didn't grab this movie as a kid! I would've loved it as I love the prequel series and the aftermath comics of 'sevety-five years later'. Beautiful story, phenomenal artwork! Glad Jim bought back this beautiful gem! ^^

While there are some extended scenes that I would have loved to see in the film's final cut, I think The Dark Crystal would not be the same movie we have all come to love. Also, Jim was never a children's puppeteer, even in his early days. If you read his bio, he tried very hard not to be tarred with that brush. Sesame Street was such an important show though, coming right at the height of the civil rights movement, that he truly believed he and his team could make a difference. I only discovered this film three years ago, right before "Age of Resistance" was even announced, and fell in love with it and the world of Thra immediately. The story is pretty darn bleak (the Skeksis nearly killing the entire Gelfling population a century before, the trial by stone, Kira getting stabbed) and I've found some fascination regarding the logistics of what comes before and after it. ("Age of Resistance" ended on a triumphant military victory, but we all know that can't last. Not to mention just what are Jen and Kira supposed to do with themselves after restoring the Crystal and sending the urSkeks packing? The proposed "Power" sequel/comic has hundreds of Gelfling running amok ala "AoR," which would imply J&K, ahem, "boinking," which just seems weird to me; they're practically first cousins, for Aughra's sake!) In the abscence of any significant Thra-related news, I'll happily tune in to you for enough illumination to light the triple suns. I presume you're working off the 1978 "The Crystal" pitch brochure?

There is zero indication that they're related, how do you get that they're "practically first cousins"? Inbreeding is still going to be a serious issue though. Most small populations consist of hundreds of people originally unrelated to one another, and the minimum population to avoid any inbreeding at all is 5,000, so... two people seems like there's gonna be a lot of inbreeding. At the very least, their kids are gonna have to have sex with each other. So unless there's other gelflings scattered here and there that they don't know about yet... yeah...

Didn’t find out until the extras on the first DVD release about the actual cut content. I'm in my upper 50s and still love that movie! It came out on video disc (not DVD for you young people) and my wife and I watched it regularly.

I was lucky enough to go to a Brian Froud exhibition in the 90's, lots of stuff from this film and Labyrinth and his books.

I pray every day that Criterion gets to release this movie and have even more bonus stuff. I just love this film and want more people to.
