Yamaha Grizzly 450 - valve clearance adjustment

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Another of the service procedures on a 2014 Yamaha Grizzly 450 ATV. In this video I show you the correct procedure on setting the valve clearance for both inlet & exhaust.
In the video I cover what parts to remove to gain access to the engine's valve covers, all specifications & torque settings needed & also a couple of tips & tricks that make the job a little easier too...
I also explain why we have a valve clearance & what happens to it over time & why.
Any questions or comments just leave them blow and I'll do my best to get back to you shortly...
Andy Mechanic!

    I adjusted the valves on my 03 Kodiak went 0.08 on Intake and 0.18 on Exhaust well with in spec and noticed it very noisy. Starts great and idles. Just a bit tap it noise. Although the Valves where never adjusted since it was new. And where way too tight before i went in there to loosen it up.

    nice video Andy, I'm working on a 2004 Yamaha Bruin 350 4x4. I have a feeling that these valves have never been adjusted. Upon pulling the starter recoil assembly, it nearly ripped my hand off. How far off are the clearances from the 2014 model from the 2004? Also I seen a tube coming off your carb? Is that going to the air box??? This one is also missing the air box as well...

I have a rhino 450 I've been working on, it starts up and idles push down on the throttle and it spits and sputters and bogs down want rev up.. I've took carb off and apart cleaned it. new spark plug and air filter.. No change same problem.. Any ideas? Thanks!

    I have an I issue with my 04 450 Yamaha Kodiak and I assume is the same as this one, I changed the oil and now it starts to smoke for about 3 minutes but then it stops. Do you think it would be the valves that need to be adjusted or piston rings?

  • @AndyMechanic

    @AndyMechanic

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Daniel Ceja it's not valve adjustment. I'd suggest replacing the oil with thicker type. The engine doesn't want fully synthetic. Best either mineral or semi 10w40 should be fine. It's obviously getting tired and could do with a top end rebuild, hone and new piston rings...

    Hi, might need a little help. I just did my first valve clearance adjustment. Everything went fine, I adjust valves, they were alil out of spec. And I adjusted them to .10mm to intake, and .20mm for exhaust. Everything seemed to have went fine, until I put everything back together and started it back up. It starts fine, but it smokes a little and can smell something burning, and it's making a loud clanking noise. I don't know if I adjusted them wrong, or what. After I tighened the locknuts on the valves, I made sure to check them again with the feeler guage. I'm not sure whats going on, but doesn't sound good... and somethings is burning.

    I think I might of adjusted them while not being at the the top position. I thought I found the line, but the line I found was a half of line. But I didn't see no T. I kept turning the crankshaft but didn't see no T. I might have to redue it all over again! bleh! after being at it for a few hours.

    +Rperley 84 yes, it's very important the engine is cold and the piston is at TDC when the tappers are 'off cam' ie the lobe of the cam of off the heel ( so valve fully closed)

    I got a carburetor question, does the small pin in the needle valve suppose to pass the air and stop when compressed or is it the entire needle valve that lifts up of the bush to allow fuel to run in? My needle valve (new) doesn't allow air flow unless i use an air compressor which blows up the whole valve and let the sir flow

  • @AndyMechanic

    @AndyMechanic

    5 жыл бұрын

    The spring loaded pin is (maybe) a damper to prevent the valve 'chattering' on the valve seat which would cause excessive wear. The fuel should only pass between the valve & valve seat. That's how I understand it. I'm sure other experienced viewers may be able to add to my comment too. Hope that helps Cheers Andy

    @@AndyMechanic Oh wow. that helps a lot! if that is the case, mine is fine and I can finish the carb installation. I thought it might be the pin that regulates the fuel flow. The "hinge" that binds the needle valve with the float, also slightly lifts the valve up when extremely deflected upwards. should it be like that?

  • @AndyMechanic

    @AndyMechanic

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hmmmm....really? Well I think under normal operation, with the floats just 'floating' in the fuel they shouldn't reach such an extreme angle so should be fine. Cheers Andy

  • @Sean-Aviation

    @Sean-Aviation

    @@AndyMechanic does the hinge that binds the float with the valve should be tight so when the float moves it will immediately lift or compress the valve? At the moment it is very loose fit and dangles too freely so when you move the float upwards, it doesn't lift the valve. I wonder if I should change it

  • @AndyMechanic

    @AndyMechanic

    The pin that goes between the two 'towers' is usually tight in the towers but the floats should be loose on the pin and flap freely.

    No you are correct but remember, this is a 4 stroke engine = 2 turns of the crank shaft to 1 turn of the cam shaft. You are 360 degrees out on the crank shaft to rotate one full revolution and reset both intake & exhaust valve clearances

    Thanks buddy. one last question, do both in and ex valved adjusted at the same top dead center? it seems that my ex valve gap as super tight. When i set the top dead center, i aligned the straight line next to the T mark. I assume the T just marked the Top dead center while the line is the spot to be aligned? Also doing a surgery to the leaking carburetor. do you adjust the float flat with the carb body?

  • @AndyMechanic

    @AndyMechanic

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, line to side of letter 'T' Float adjustment - highly unlikely it's not correct. If carb leaking/overflowing 99% chance the problem isn't float height. Adjustment method/specs vary to manufacturer - you need the Service Manual for specs and measuring method. Hope this helps Andy

So i rotated it another 180 degrees and it was closer but man....at least 15 degrees off. I have no idea how the ATV was working smooth before.....chain is very tight so I cant see how the tensioner is faulty. zero slack in the chain. Any ideas?....unit only backfires when trying to start the engine but it doesn't run at all (or cough)

    @@AndyMechanic OK here is the latest update and its crazy - I established the TDC using a pencil in the cylinder so pencil (piston) is at the very top, sprocket indentation mark was perfectly aligned with the crank notch AND both valves were at the top position and loose. Now, at this point i checked the flywheel/rotor T mark and it was not there at all. THAT is off. I was amazed with the IN valve as it was sssooooo open (instead of 0.1mm it was about 3.5mm!!!). reason being so is that I adjusted the valves based on the T mark of the rotor (not the sprocket as now). Not sure how to get the rotor T mark aligned with the sprocket (without a major crank surgery)

  • @AndyMechanic

    Right....there is a chance that the flywheel has broken it's key way and slipped. To confirm this you'll need to remove the stator cover and flywheel....to do this you'll need a puller.
