Yamaha Grizzly 450 - CVT drive belt inspection

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Another of the service procedures on a 2014 Yamaha Grizzly 450 ATV. In this video I show you the correct procedure on how to gain access to & inspect the CVT drive belt as per the Yamaha official service manual....
All specifications & torque settings are included as are a couple of tips & tricks that make the job a little easier too...
This task should be included in all major services of the bike, to be performed every 150 hours. Belt life is really dependent on usage, the harder the bike works the faster the belt will wear. This ATV had, at the time of this service, completed 217 hours from new & the belt measurement indicated it was a third worn.....so, if you have a Yamaha Grizzly 450 or similar & its done more than 600 hours I'd strongly recommend you get the drive belt checked if it hasn't been done yet!
Any questions or comments just leave them blow and I'll do my best to get back to you shortly...
Andy Mechanic!

Do you know the size of the socket needed to remove the second spring? I used a 1 and 3/4th inch, but it just wasn't catching. I got the spring off and replaced it, but I couldn't use the same socket effectively to tighten the nut back on to full torque. So I'm wondering if you know the metric size of the socket needed to remove/replace secondary spring? I wasn't able to fully torque it back to specifications with the 16 pt socket that I used, so I'm looking to buy a 6 pt. socket. I looked through the manual, all of the internet and cannot find the socket size needed. any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Hi Andy my name is Nate from Mountain Lake Mn I was wondering if you ever ran across a clutch that had a chatter noise when accelerating on a yamaha grizzly 450. almost like a knocking sound. the wheeler performs perfect but makes that annoying chatter sound from the clutch area??

Hi Nathan, yes, I have come across issues with the Ultra magic CVT drive that produce a clattering noise when riding. You'll need to remove the CVT drive cover to expose the pulleys and belt. Firstly check there are no fan fins missing from the secondary sheave (big pulley) if there are then you have a major issue. Also check the inner half of the primary sheave where it splines to the output shaft of the centrifugal clutch. Sometimes these splines get damaged because the primary sheave retaining nut has not been sufficiently torqued up - often Mechanics just tighten them using an impact wrench which usually isn't enough! So to check this you'll have to remove the primary sheave completely. Whilst it's off have a look at the condition of the roller weights and where they run in the 8 grooves in the outer pulley. Rollers should be greased using the special Grizzly grease, they should have no flats on them - if so then replace. Cam plate must not have any wear on contact points where Rollers touch - if so replace. Hope this info is of help Andy

Hi Andy. Thanks for these videos. I have an '09 Grizz 450, so following your videos to do some good work on my machine. One question: The machine runs fine on the gravel roads. I put new tires on it. Not very aggressive tires, just new. But now when I ride on the soggy tundra (I live in Kotzebue, AK., 32 miles above the Arctic Circle), the machine begins to bog down. I have it in 4 high. It can't be a fuel issue, I don't think, otherwise it would bog on the gravel roads. It's just when I'm in bogs and the engine has to work hard that she's like self-retarding or something. So, I have to go in 4-low to really move through the watery bogs to get out of them. Even then, she wants to bog down just a little. Can you explain what's going on? What do I need to do to remedy the situation? I spoke to a mechanic in Anchorage and he had me buy some Yamaha Polyurea Grease to put on the primary sheave drive. Now, mind you, I'm not a mechanic and I'm 1,000 miles away from that fella by air. So, where and how do I put this grease for my clutch? (He assumes this will remedy the bogging issue). I'm trying to hunt moose before the winter sets in which is not too far off. So I'd like to figure out this bogging issue. I was hoping in this video that you might speak about this grease but you didn't and that's OK. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for all the info, very helpful. Right, firstly, the CVT drive grease, this is a relatively big job & requires impact wrench & torque wrench too, plus I don't think it's your problem. Let me explain: if the grade goes hard due to dust contamination then the primary sheave does not fully actuate, resulting in the upper ratios not been achieved. As a result the engine hits the rev limiter. This will reduce power output but not as I would describe 'bogging down'. Bogging down is the engine's RPM dropping off under load & a significant loss in torque output. Provided you have good fuel supply then I thing the issue lies in your ignition system, like you say. When an engine is under heavy load, as when driving through boggy terrain, the quality of the spark is critical. Plus there will be a lot of water around too. Check your plug cap & HT lead. Grab a test light or just a bit of wire. Attach the clamp or one end of the wire to the engine casing then run the probe or other end over the outside of the cap & along the HT lead, you can spray it with a mist of water before hand. You'll need the engine running. If the insulation on the cap or HT lead is compromised then the high voltage will jump to the test light or wire & short to ground, engine will misfire & may even stall out Let me know how you get on Cheers Andy

Is the belt size the same as a grizzly 350?

Does the cvt drive have fluid that needs serviced periodically like the kawasaki brute force 300. Or is it called the transmission fluid ? Its fluid besides the engine oil.

No fluid in the CVT drive but the sheaves should be serviced annually & regressed using Yamalube Ultramatic grease. Cheers Andy
